I know there has been a lot of chatter and much of it grumbly about this app, both here and elsewhere, but I'm here to tell you it's a fine piece of work and the reason I know this is I've just written a good portion of good song with it and thus in the only book that matters to me I now have it noted down as a fine app irrespective of everything that's disappointing or wrong with it. Peace etc.

Haters are going to hate that it isn’t a compact version of Reason, but it is fucking fantastic sounding. I launch it occasionally to peruse the presets. I have them all. But I haven’t made anything significant with it and I’m not sure why. Won’t ask you to explain your workflow, but I’d love to hear the piece you produced. I’m finding more inspiration in the sounds people are able to get out of these things than actual steps to produce.

I just started beta testing for this. It has drums and bass now. Some minor tweaks to the interface that help streamline it , too.

Only just checked it out for about 10 minutes. Banging on 2 drum pads simultaneously caused it to crash. :)

Will try some more tomorrow. But it is looking pretty good so far.

    Ooh, It's a 'Monophonic Drum Machine' so it's not a 'bug' it's a 'feature' ;)

I think of it as a bookend (yes, very different, but still) to Groovebox, but as soon as I realized I could save my own patches, whoosh, OK, time to play. I have been applying the 'make a full pattern and then steadily keep reducing it' which is entirely the opposite of how I used to work, but much more effective/creative (I find), especially as regards creating elliptical or pregnant space. Yeah, I know, look at me. :)

As and when I'm done I'll happily force you to listen to it OR if I get stuck and give up, I'll share the patterns at least and you can see where I died along the way etc.

  • is this app still works? Isn't it "abandonware"? Any news?

Abandonware? As good as. Extremely disappointing what Reason Studios (Propellerheads) has accomplished with iOS.

Hmmm. I think the last version was 3 months ago. Hardly abandoned. Maybe 'left at the bustop while they went into the Offie to get some Thunderbird wine'.....but despite all of the coulda/shouldas I like a lot of the sounds in Reason Compact and find it records easy via AB to Auria. Often give it a fiddle.

I guess my outlook is tempered by the fact that I have Reason 11, and thus the full Europa. The crippled iOS version just doesn’t cut it.

  • I’m a fan of Groovebox, and it’s weird how I didn’t know that this app exists. Thanks for reopening this thread. Going to dig into this app to learn more about the specs.

It makes nice sounds, for sure. However, I’m not optimistic around Reason Studios’ roadmap for iOS. It appears to be patronising and cynical imho. I wish they would’ve just brought out an AUv3 Europa. They could’ve charged £35-£50 for it, with IAP preset packs for generating further revenue. It would’ve sold well and been a better advert for desktop Reason.

Not going to disagree, opinions are what we're all entitled to, but I think a lot of the disquiet around this app relates to what the developing company could or maybe should do. I empathize, but when I also simply listen to the noise I can make with this thing I'm happy to have it for the price I paid. Would certainly welcome anything else they deign to throw at us however :)
