@mAxjUlien how do you reset the RAM, please?

@LinearLineman Hold power button until you get the "slide to power off" option - then hold home button for 3-4 secs until it brings you back to home screen

That does not reset the ram. I’ve monitored this by using an app called iDoctor Pro. I don’t think it’s on AppStore, but you can find similar apps on AppStore. I can get as much as 900mb on my 1gig iPad Air & 3gigs free on my 4gig iPad Pros... while resetting by double press gains nothing. It’s better to power off and power on again so iOS comes in fresh...

Not doubting your experience or that app but I just lived a conflicting experience. The reset described does in fact free up RAM...or some other process that accomplishes what RAM does.

I crashed at 11 instances several times before doing it. Once done, significant gains as many others have also described. So again, not saying your wrong...but the reset works very well for me. Power off and on takes too long and the reset doesn’t even close the app...you can continue on with your session.

It definitely kills ghost processes, and frees up other resources, and is a great thing to do regularly to avoid all kinds of audio, midi, and IAA weird behavior. Total free RAM isn’t the only constraint on resource allocation. Dr. Whatever notwithstanding, I know without a doubt after countless instances that it’s a quick way to avoid or cure many issues.

@Kühl you said “double-tap”. Did you really mean that, or are rou referring to the full memory clear described. Double-tap on the home button does indeed do nothing.

I’ve upgraded my new 26.7cm iPad Pro. The first thing that stood out as soon as I saw the screenful of apps was an unfamiliar unwanted “Stocks” app I certainly didn’t put there, so within a second I deleted that! The time isn’t where I’m used to seeing it, so I’ve got to get used to looking elsewhere for the time. The iPad camera still isn’t fixed – the shutter button is still on the incorrect side to be able to be used without also dropping the iPad, as both hands are now over there on the right side, one prodding and the other trying to grip the same edge, with all the remaining weight of the iPad slipping out of the grip as the button is pushed. I’m fed up with dropping the iPad this way – I’ve done it twice on my previous iPads, yet the camera is still misdesigned after so many years.

Did you know you can use the volume buttons rather than the shutter button?

No. That simply wasn’t apparent. I should have tried a few other random things to see if they fix other shortcomings, such as wearing stripey underpants, pointing the cactus in a certain way, and drawing three quarters of a circle on the second egg along in the fridge.

You’re supposed to discover it (and rediscover it ad-nauseum) by taking countless inadvertent photos when you’re resting your device on something to steady it to take a shot.

  • On a positive note, I’m happy to see the “active Audio recording” as a small button in iOS 12, rather than the entire red bar across the top.

  • @mAxjUlien, yes saved about $400, but prices are higher in Turkey. The 256 Pro2 still cost me $750... about new in the states.

That is my only complaint about 12, took me forever to get used to how they swapped those buttons on the keyboard.

I thought something was wacky! No worries, I deleted the emoji keyboard and the handwriting keyboard I had and now I can type again (as badly as I type anyway)

That does not work. You have to power off and power on. Sometimes that does not work either. iOS likes to have things ready in memory.

I bought and installed the app iDoctor (pro Version)

I meant tap on two buttons together.
It may perhaps kill background processes, but that it resets ram... well I beg to differ.
I can measure the amount of ram I have at any time, and ? I measured it in many different ways and then made my scientific conclusion. I’ve even used 2 iPad Pros 12,9 (both Marks) an iPad Air plus an iPhone 6s in my experiments.

With a double hold tap, you gain, some ram, but with a power off you get all the ram like turning on a new machine.
    That looks like this:

After I work with lots of apps, it looks like this:

    Then I simply do this:

You can also do the same with the disk:

I’ve heard press rumours about a release of new iPads and some macs in October.
One rumour in particular, about movements in Apples supply chain, makes it reasonably credible.
    I was right about September, wasn’t I ?

  • Ok not firm evidence in any way, but I did get slightly longer than average on my old Air2 battery than I mostly got with ios11. Yep that’s only one instance and it’s pretty hard to do any real tests.

General use performance is mostly faster than ios11 - so far anyway.
Apps in general seem to load fractionally faster. I’m getting less problems when running apps that use samples as AU.

I’m down to 6% battery now and I’ve had my iPad running for about 8 hours now - it’s been a long time since I’ve had 8 hours out of it!

Downloading this antutu spyware benchmark thingy but lord, 411mb?!!

    What is it?

    Does it contain samplepacks?

Are we sure this isn’t another gospel musicians app? ;)

Performance los of about 5% after updating to iOS in Antutu.
Left picture is 11.4.1 benchmark 202.945
Right Picture is 12.0 benchmark 193.589

After all positive performance gains stories mixed feelings with this update because seems performance los. I ran Antutu 3 times and it was all around the 193.000 mark. The picture is from the highest btw.

    Hi @greengrocer !
I was curious and I just made the same Benchmarks with my two iPad Pro.

    IOS 11.4.1
    iPad Pro 12.9 2nd generation - 274.273 Points

    IOS 12.0
iPad Pro 10.5 (same specs as The 12.9) - 275.582 Points

So it seems the IOS 12 performance is not bad isn’t it? 😊

    274.273 IOS 11.4.1
    275.582 IOS 12.0

1.309 Points more for IOS 12!
    😎

This is my Pro 10.5 on 11.4.1.

So performance of iOS 12 is not as bad as it could have been but not as good as 11.

Yup. Feels snappy on my Air 2 too. I also like the new control center and how it shows the battery percentage when dragging down as I don't have that turned on by default on my devices. Having the date in the left corner is nice too.

    So far so good.

Keep in mind my battery life varies anyway depending on what I’m doing, but during the about 8 hours (it may have been less than 8 but definitely over 7), I’ve used Cubasis for a couple of hours, surfed the net, downloaded some IAPs, watched some you tube etc etc.

Definetly seemed like I got longer. I did seem to have a drop of battery life with iOS 11 though. I’m amazed I can still get so long after the use my Air2 has had these last 3 and a half years.

I’m back on charge so in the next week, I will try a whole day in a DAW and see how that goes.

After I work with lots of apps, it looks like this:

    Then I simply do this:

The bulk of what you're clearing there is "Inactive" memory. Inactive memory is a cache of recent apps / processes that allows those to relaunch quicker. However, if another process requires this memory it will be released to the new process. It really is part of the bucket of available RAM for you to use (along with Free)

RAM unavailable to other processes is the Active RAM used by user processes and Wired RAM used by the system.

It seems to have reduced those as well, but my hunch is that it's killing some System processes to get a nice result, but those will typically re-spawn shortly.

However, as mentioned, the real benefit to the Power-then-Home combo is to kill any zombie processes.

  • My air 1 is definitely better on 12 than on 11. How much I can't say but it definitely is a smoother experience.

Respawns within minutes. So no problem there.

Is the battery gadget in system prefs a good way to measure your ghosts?

To be honest, I've never checked. Next time something seems screwy I'll try to remember to take a look....

I just make that reset a part of my routine when I'm trying to do something more than just mess around as I constantly push my iPad to the limit and need every last bit of CPU time I can wrangle!

  • I don't need to run any benchmarks to tell me that the devices that I have installed iOS12 on (an iPhone SE and an iPad Pro 10.5) feels a little bit snappier and more responsive than before, when doing everyday common tasks like bringing up the control panel and just navigating around, opening and closing various apps etc. I'm liking the new control panel on the iPad, it's better and smoother than before, and it's real quick to bring it up and close it with the new swipe. I also like the new screen time feature.

  • I ran Geekbench tests which showed negligable improvements on all devices under iOS12. I think most benefits are in optimized UI behavior and high-level system tasks, rather than raw hardware performance. That's perfectly fine though, as it means that in daily use our devices feel better over the entire spectrum of use cases.

Cool. I thought this would be the case, good to know. It actually makes me happy to know that Apple have put some time into making our devices run better instead of just adding more fluff.

  • I haven’t noticed much in the way of improved performance. I’m just glad it’s not broken...

    +2

It even fixed the freezing issues on my iPad Pro 12,9 Mark II
My Mark I never had those problems.

After a week of use I have no complaints, other than my fingers jump to click on the creek after closing an app, to get the screen bright. In iOS12 this happens automatically so I always end up starting another app

Here’s my recent geekbench result for y’all to compare...
