AU vs. anything else
OK, I understand the convenience of an all AU matrix of interconnected instruments/sequencers/effects/controllers/automation, and I’d love to see a universal format across all platforms someday. However, there happens to be forks in the development path for iOS that led to some strong opinions AU and IAA. I know that some of you have a lot vested into the platform and have very high hopes for the future of it, and others (like myself) are here out of curiosity for the tools of the muse.
When I started learning about DAW and VST, there were so many threads about being “dawless” like it was going to get the music dirty or something. I saw the same reaction to the boog, and now I’m getting the same vibe from the AU yellers. I know it’s a rant, but my point is that in a creative environment, one will always encounter challenges and a need for a workaround here and there. Otherwise, everything might end up being a variant of the same, as everybody’s work flow follows the path of least resistance. I’m just glad that whenever I need to, there’s a jam in my pocket, be it in a matrix or gadget.
Comments
Guilty as charged!
I will say though that I think sticking with IAA is going to start to hurt developers sales. Many conversations on FB and Discord are, “I would have bought it if it was AU” (keeping the standalone grooveboxes out of it).
This forum is a little different. Maybe because of the history? There’s some long memories here. Maybe because Audiobus helps connect IAA apps?
Anyway, I’m excited for 2019 so no complaints from me.
For me the big turning point was seeing Model15 become an AU. Up until then AU instruments were pretty tame. Synthmaster One and Egoist were the AU nails in the IAA coffin for me.
But hey if people want to buy IAA stuff still then go for it, what do I care? Get 8 tracks and dinosaur saddles while you are exchanging beaver pelts at the trading post too etc troll etc...
Lol. You’ve been drinking, haven’t you @AudioGus![ ](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
The Gus troublemakers...
Hehe we have been accused of sharing the same IP (and starting completely unsubstantiated self sabotaging rumors) you know... (urp, nothin but milk, honest)
Hey, not bad... I was hoping to pull out some hard lines on this, and any of the tasty treats that come with it.
Alright, truth be told, just today I was wishing that NS2 were an IAA generator so I could host it in BM3 and record it.
but this is only because it doesn’t have audio tracks or AUfx automation yet.
Just use what works for you.
Don’t worry about what works for everybody else.
It ain’t that big of a deal.
Truth be told - i agree with you.
Exactly the workaround I wanted to highlight, record the IAA, take that .wav and make it where you need it. What’s wrong with making your own samples and feeding them back into an AU or whatever. It’s not like (most of us) have to get anything done on time. It might sound dumb, but personally being in the same room with my family is the reason I’m doing anything on iOS, when they are out and I get to pop into the studio and move the .wav over to my desktop I feel 1/2 way into the project. Whatever (AU,IAA) makes that happen is satisfying.
Au is key for me, i work in short bursts and like to save once and be back to where i was.
Auv3 all the way for the future. It’s just better... But, there’s always something good to be found here and there in the IAA apps. I won’t delete mine they...
AU is getting more and more desirable when I have multiple BM3 projects all using the same IAA synth. I have to remember which preset goes with which track. I now am just sampling my IAA riffings and using them as loops in BM3 but AU is so much easier.
And with effects, AU is crucial for me these days. I wouldn’t buy a new IAA Fx (elastic wAs the last!) but will buy IAA synths still, if they are reeeeaaalllly nice. (I don’t need any more damn synths tho!)
i have started resisting apps that arent au this year. with the exception of Patterning 2 and Animoog i have very little interest in that old screen switching workflow. but hey some people love iaa and thats cool too but i wont be buying anymore of those.
Yes, screen switching sucks, but so does the floating windows flood![o:) o:)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/innocent.png)
AUs need a maximize button!
And you're back to square one aka screen switching![:* :*](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/kiss.png)
Rescaleable floating AU Windows offer the best workflow imo, you can get the most options that way and choose to go full screen if you want, plus remembering window configurations in apeMatrix (AUM is getting this too I think). Double tap background to hide and reveal again is great. Design your own UI configuration for each matrix.
However I think Audiobus currently offers the best maximised AU window view and switching between them is nice, just no option to see more than one AU at once currently.
AU automation record and playback rocks my world. Not all AU apps support it but most that I have tested have the capabilitiy. I still use a handful of IAA/AB only apps too because they’re so unique.
The biggest problem I have with IAA apps is the inherent instability of the code versus AU, state saving, and one instance. There are many IAA apps I still continue to use. AU still has room for improvement in terms of consistent GUI display in AU hosts/iOS devices, local/global preset saving options, and finally AU MIDI support in AU host apps.
Being able to host an AU host apps inside another AU host app via IAA (e.g. Audiobus 3 and AUM) can be a very convenient option to have at times. You can’t host AU apps inside other AU apps.
The main problem I have with AU is that no hosts has it all to make them fun to use.
AUM does not have an open windows toolbar to access them without having to move everything around.
AB3 shows only one at a time, but has at least a toolbar.
None of them have a modwheel and pitchwheel on their keyboard, I really don’t get that one, really.
Those app have midi learn, but even tho they detect where you put your fingers on the screen, they don’t allow midi learn (yet) directly on the AU interface, so menu diving is required.
BM3 has mod and pitch on the keyboard.
Too many great synths in IAA to give up on IAA (Animoog, Nave, all the Korgs, FM4, TF7, Cube, iProhet, Synthscaper, Audulus, Mitosynth etc) and my favorite host sequences and renders them.
My preference is for AU - basically they seem a bit more stable, take less CPU, and you can run multiple instances. Plus some hosts (ApeMatrix) only support AU.
But I still use IAA, and wouldn't dismiss a good new app (e.g. Aphelian, coming soon) for not supporting AU. As @Littlewoodg says there are a ton of amazing IAA only apps.
Probably a typo, but ApeMatrix supports IAA, not just AU.
apeMatrix supports IAA apps too, NanoStudio 2 does not.
It’s got to the point now though that a good chunk of buyers will not purchase new apps that don’t support AU. No Patterning 2, no iBassist, no Loopseque, no Aphelian, etc. Sure, their loss but that has to hurt developer revenues as well.
These apps are made for the beatmaking community yet the comments on the 10,000 member FB group and the people in the BM3 forum and Discord chat are overwhelmingly saying they won’t even look at them. (I don’t think I’m exaggerating here, there was one guy on FB who was holding out and then one day he posted about the joys of AU automation and state saving and joined the brainwashed...).
Good points above though. Improvements to the AU format are stilll needed and there will be another format coming along soon enough...
It’s hard being a developer!
There was chatter of Patterning2 at some point potentially hosting AUs which could be super fun to consider.
Nah.. AUv3 will be the leading format for some time to come. Even on desktop AUv3 is still in the early stages of its life cycle. IAA on the other hand... good riddance![B) B)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/sunglasses.png)
Flipping heck - I've had it for a few weeks now and never noticed the IAA tab on the top, and just assumed it didn't support them.
Doh!
