Just got it with my xmas itunes gift and am very much loving it (but it is 2019
).
Groove Rider GR-16 and Ruismaker Noir.
Yeah I guessed as much. I’m going to try and reign in my spending a bit this year, but if there’s no change, and I don’t get anything else in the meantime I’ll probably crumble and get it
Audio tracks would give me a proper nudge mind...
It would be GrooveRider GR-16 by a landslide if I bought it two weeks later (bought Dec. 17, 2017).
So... NS2. Best quality and most pleasing UI, which just makes me feel really good. Like playing those high-end acoustic guitars in the special humidity controlled room at the back of Guitar Center. Or riding in my nephew’s top of the line Tesla.
One app you say? How about one app per category
IMO, YMMV, BITOFFUN, etc. etc.
Innovative Developer Award: Kai Aras - Check the 2018 apps! What a year. RM-1 Wave Modulator, KB-1 MIDI Keyboard, RE-1 Tape Machine, Volt Synth. So fresh.
All Things Beats and Then Some Developer Award: Klevgrand - REAMP, Kleverb, Degrader, GoToEQ, DAW LP, DAW Cassette. That's quite a year! Want to make great sounding beats on iOS? No more excuses people!
Deserves All The Accolades and Should Be Filthy Rich from iOS App Sales Award: Bram Bos - Ruismaker Noir, Perforator, Kosmonaut. Seriously, I was gutted when I read that sales figures are not through the roof for Bram Bos' apps. And let's not forget the AU MIDI portal world that Bram has opened up (with Jonatan Liljedahl / Kymatica).
Quality Studio Tools Award (and Best Developer Name Award): Woodman's Immaculate Maple Syrup Studio - Woodpressor, Woodulator, WoodnGate. Quality apps AND quality manuals. This guy knows his onions.
Best Patch Party Award: KQ Dixie. Genius feature to allow old DX7 patch import.
Best Attitude Award: Samplist. "The app I need doesn’t exist so I’m going to try to code it myself". Hey kids, big learning opportunity here! How to approach a problem. Don't just complain, try to create the solution!
Best Cross Platform Releases/Ports Award: Audio Damage - PhaseThree, Ratshack Reverb, Quanta Granular Synth, ADverb2, Discord4. That's quite a catalogue in 2018!
Best Feature That I Would Like To See In Every App Award: The incredible randomizer in Volt Synthesizer. Never get stuck for new sounds. I hope other developers copy the idea.
My Most Used FX Award: RX-950. Love the sound of this filter.
Geek Power Award: StreamByter. Opens up a whole new world of possibilities.
Service to the Community Award: AudioKit. By open sourcing the code, the barrier to entry for iOS music app development has dropped significantly. When the AU code is released, watch out!
Debut of the Year Award: SpaceCraft. What a blinder! Deserves all the praise.
Not New But Keep Coming Back To Award: AUM. Still the quickest way in 2018 for me to experiment with new sounds and loops on iOS.
Surprise Hit Award: Streemur. Love this simple app. Use it all the time.
Did Somebody Ask for AU Plugins? Award: 4Pockets. Bam bam bam! Can't stop, won't stop!
Give The People What They Want Award: AudioLayer. Everyone had been asking for this type of AU sampler and VirSyn delivered.
Never Give Up Award: NanoStudio 2. So pleased for the developer to see this finally get released. Another great learning opportunity in grit and resilience. Nice app too!
Most Professional Release Award: FabFilter ProQ 2 EQ AU. This was such a smooth port to AU. Very few issues out of the gate. Lovely design. Top class and top quality.
Most Innovative Performance App Award: Gestrument Pro. Made for the touchscreen and opens up the genres to invite classical, jazz and more performance based sounds into iOS as well.
So Close to International Fame and Stardom Award: BeatMaker 3. Small steps in 2018 to what could be the app to blow up to a much bigger audience. Great community starting to grow around this one as well with the Intua forum, Discord chat, and FB group.
DAW to Watch Award: Stagelight. Another impressive cross platform port to iOS. Keeping a close eye on this one.
Sleeper FX Award: Electrogene. Great sounding FX with nice automation.
Most Unique Instrument Award: auGEN X by auDSPr. Unique and creative sound design tool that can also be used as an audio test utility. Very impressive debut.
Desktop Synth Port Award: SynthMaster One. Great sounding synth with an engaged developer who has kept the updates coming.
MIDI Sequencer Award: Xequence - top class linear MIDI sequencer with great updates and excellent customer support.
IAA to AU Updates of the Year Award: SugarBytes. Do you hear the cheers that go up every time a new SugarBytes AU update lands? Aparillo synth was a major release as well.
This App Keeps Getting Better and Better Award: Tiebreaker between GrooveRider GR-16 and Audio Evolution Mobile Studio! Amazing developers who have continuously responded to feature requests in 2018.
Without You None of This Would Be Possible Award: Goes to Michael of course, for AudioBus and for providing this community platform.
Model D - this thing is now my go to for synth bass patches I need
Great post!
@gusgranite that was a superb post. Kudos!!
I love NS2 but have more or less put it on the shelf until updates come in. Yes, audio tracks will be huge (as will AUfx automation) but right now it seems to have a lot of issues with just AUs that do not have issues in other hosts for me, particularly with mixdowns. They simply stall and timeout all the time if there are particular AUs present in the project and even if those AUs are muted and not even being exported etc it has issues. I get that I could spend more time with it and work out the if/then/why/workarounds of things more but really either midi clock sync or audio tracks or good mixdowns of AUs are needed for me to go too much further now. For straight midi into desktop I may play around on the weekends as it is still ace for that though.
+1, 2018 was a very good year for music making apps.
Thanks Gus. Does seem to have a few niggles, so I’ve got a nice comfy cushion to sit on for a while on this fence
@gusgranite

You forgot to drop the mic at the end.
That’s because iMicDrop hasn’t been released yet
Haha, thanks all. That was fun.
Can't believe you don't have that dongle yet....
I couldn't pick ONE so I waited to see which incredible app got neglected and so I have my winner for 2018:
ApeMatrix (OOPS... I re-read and saw others mentioning it).
Like Rozetta it includes several AUv3 (sub) products: Sampler, Oscilloscope, VU-Meters, Send/Recieve Bus
It has the best approach to "Knob Automation" using AU Parameters which is like automating CC's or MIDI Learn but easier showing every control available for any AUv3 App or FX and letting you assign a controller. Most of the big WOW's seem to be App/Synths that apply complex automations to make things really change with a single input (like Aparillo for example)
The Matrix is well designed but could take some time to master but the results could be impressive. It saves a complex setup and we could share some of the work if we get enough using it as a base.
I think a series of Videos exposing more of the ApeMatrix Suite of tools could really drive up hits for a YouTube trainer.
I'm sure we missed more amazing apps for 2018 worth mentioning in the wrap-up. Think! Look over your purchases.
@gusgranite You just started yourself a tradition Mister....
Could you please give me a quick nudge in the right direction to find this piece of obviousness which is eluding my silly self etc? Ta.
Just out the door - more info when I get a chance
The Spawn2 randomized in Kauldron is just as good if it better than Volts
If a monophonic Model D clone is an option, try Blamsoft's Viking synth. It's on sale for $2 now and it sounds like the real deal. Just tried to run 5 instances in Cubasis on an old iPad Mini 2, no problem.
NS2. I’m getting music done. That’s it.
GR16. This thing is a monster. What can’t it do? Spacecraft. I was so apprehensive when it came around just based on the name. My bad. It’s insane and I’d say I leaned my lesson in judgment prior to investigation! Noir. This is so killer. Streamlined so perfectly ‘A la Senor Bram. ApeMatrix. I wish there could be a Audio Evolution/ Stagelight hybrid. That would be super. 2018 was an incredible year for iOS music me thinks!
Ah ha! Found it, thanks to you
synthmaster one or aparillo
You know what? I had kind of missed the per parameter sliders in Kauldron. That is very cool! Now it doesn’t expose all of the parameters like Volt does so I’m sticking with Volt but put the two together and you have something very special. Thanks for the heads up.
Surprised nobody has mentioned Kronecker. While there were many other apps with more sizzle, I consistently started more tunes that went somewhere with Kronecker then any other app on 2018. It's the acoustic guitar of iOS for me.
The Moog Model D would be the obvious choice, but I’m going to go out on a limb and pick the Audio Kit Digital D1 as the best app of 2018. I am so impressed with the passion and dedication of Matthew and the team — and it just keeps getting better! Both D1 and Synth One—the hard work and love really shows,
And the best review award of 2018-19 goes to.........
@gusgranite
Dude, I could seriously use some tips and pointers from you.
I can’t get anything going in that one. Its logic escapes me, but I can tell it can do great things. I just can’t seem to figure out how to get any control over the sound design.
Might need to revisit it now that I’ve spent some time with Aparillo. I have a feeling that the strange Arp in Aparillo has a similar logic, and I finally started to understand that.
