Really looking forward to this, @blueveek The scale quantize idea is interesting— could it be non-destructive? What I imagine seeing is the original note in the roll grayed out, with it's quantized counterpart in the regular color, and when you change the scale only the quantized notes would move, if necessary.

    Nice idea @aaronpc

It could be called elastic/dynamic quantize

  • Have been hearing some interesting ideas in this thread @blueveek

The other AUs you are talking about, especially the one to enable song construction at a higher level than piano roll is something that I am really interested in and would really make the idea of an ad-hoc, DIY DAW a possibility.

Can you take a look into the timeline panel and concept in SunVox? The desktop version is free to use and works pretty much the same across all platforms. The timeline is a great way of working that is a step on from traditional DAW timelines in that you can place clips any where horizontally and vertically. I find that this allows for a much better view of song construction by allowing the musician to group their content as they see fit without the artifical constraint of track lanes.

Also, one major extra feature would be lyrics and notes in the timeline, displayed at the correct places to further allow singers to manipulate song structure with references to vocals,etc.. and even to work as the song sheet for recording the singing along to the music.

Great to see you being so involved with the forum.

  • Yes! That’s one thing I borrowed from GB, and has become a core feature. It’s essential for loop recording and looped playback.

  • This is a wonderful idea! And a great name to go with it. It might be a bit too complex to sufficiently polish for initial release, but I’ll work this into a future update for sure.

  • Folding notes! It's very useful when you want to play around only with several notes and finding different variations.. That's one of the very fewer features I miss from Gadget...

  • Can you tell me more about what you mean? Not sure what you're referring to exactly :)

  • Sounds great! With so much activity in this forum, how do you find time to code?

  • i think he means an option to only show the note lanes in a chosen scale, or choose to show only the note lanes that have been recorded into the sequencer. for ex: if you had recorded a 2 bar sequence that only had C, A, and G notes - you could go into sequencer the only lanes show those 3 notes

  • This app looks very exciting. I'm sure I've posted repeatedly the last couple of years how AUv3 needed a good piano roll editor that you could just drop into AUM and program something. I know that much of the appeal of AU is for live players and a DAW-less approach, but there are tons of times I wanted to do an informal jam in AUM and had no way to program a simple bassline or chord progression outside of something like the Rozeta apps (most of which are based on randomization, etc.). This should help big time!

  • I also really like the fold option too, and use it all the time when in Ableton, also seen in the Modstep piano roll.

It's really useful with drum sequencing on the piano roll where you can switch off all the irrelevant surrounding notes for example. :)

  • Since we all can drop some wishes and requests here...

I LOVE (!!) the option in SPA of creating and saving AND syncing my sequences and presets via iCloud. But SPA is not a sequencer ;) So my vote would go for using iCloud to sync and save sequences/melodies and stuff. Thanks for universal build from beginning! Thanks!

  • iCloud is definitely on the roadmap. Won't do it for the first release since there's some complications there with how Apple handles corporations vs. individuals and how app transfers work (for apps using iCloud), which I need to sort out first.

Gosh, that UI looks beautiful, and the multi track and scene launching possibilities have me very excited.

The ability to mix and match sequencers on a per channel basis that MIDI AUs have opened up is a game changer.

  • Yes, I meant "recorded notes" folding rather than "scale folding". You can use many MIDI plug-ins for that which will filter passing notes based on the scale, but this is purely visual - not get distracted by other notes, reduce the chance of moving it off the tone, very useful for drums etc

  • Better still, drum mode, fixed note length, add note lanes as you need them, user choice on what note the lane triggers.

  • This might be a stoopid question since I've been 'off the grid' for a while but will this 'thing' also support 'step-recording/note-entry' with tie/rest options?

I'm too used to the way step-entry/recording in Logic Pro X works so it's like second nature to me.

(ie. the notes are added to a step _after_ all the held notes are released with the option to tie them to the next step while holding down the notes by tapping on the sustain pedal).

So far this looks like it could be a winner especially if it will also include some performance options (ie. if it's possible to play & transpose the clip using a keyboard ie. treating the midi-clip as a 'sample').

  • Honestly... my perfect midi sequencer would be good ol’ Genome as an AU that allowed real-time recording when you’re at the “session” or cell/grid view.

midi clip launching in that thing is perfect. Such an awesome tool... but recording is a pain in the ass...

  • This looks like a fantastic app. Here are my own peculiar wishes:

    1. Ability to select a note in the piano roll and split it into an equal number of shorter notes (lasso a quarter note, split it into triplets or two eighth notes). Someone has this - I can't remember who. Maybe Multi Track Studio?
    2. Ability to select a bunch of notes across a bar and set a velocity slope up or down for them as a group (select a seven note melody, tell it to start with 40 velocity on the first note and end up at 80 velocity by the last note). Xewton Music Studio has this and it's great.
    3. Can your AU keyboard have an option for two rows, one above the other, like Xequence and NS have? (Even better for me is a 'fretboard' layout option but dual key rows feels like a more realistic request).

You have to love when developers are silent...

    work in progress..

    😎

  • I'm still think is amazing to be able to have this conversation, coming up with feature wishes and the likes. Respect for your patience.

I agree with what you say about scale locking not letting in chromatic notes. I think of it as a quick way to come up with melodies and ideas, which later can be further developed. Also as a way to explore new scales (imaging supporting Scala files! or just quick select by clicking in the piano roll the notes you want displayed) and therefore new horizons. Furthermore, say you want to sequence Ruismaker FM, then you limit the scale to the black keys. Or Noir and only want 3 or 4 notes in a wide pitch spectrum.

This and the note length lock can make a really nice, flexible and quick sequencer.

Again, I am thinking Xynthesizr as my main source of inspiration (which I understand is more a sequencer than a piano roll)

Regarding scale folding for non played notes, maybe this is fine for editing (?) but this option is more limiting in my opinion.

Regarding UX, maybe this is covered but "painting" notes (rather than only "clicking"), please.

And velocity? Probability? - joining the voices up there.

    Whatever, looking forward to it!

  • Step entry is in the works right now.

When I started this thread, the only input method was recording (while the host transport is playing), which is what most people would be expecting I think. However, I think it would be a really good idea to add step input for the initial release, even with the risk of delaying things a few more days, especially since I've seen repeated requests for this.

  • These aren't peculiar at all! Here's some good news:

    1. Implemented today, will be available for initial release.
    2. This seems like a good idea, let's see if the existing automation controls work well enough for you, otherwise I'm planning a future update that adds a lots of quality of life / shortcuts to this and other of the sequencer.
    3. I'm not planning to release an AU keyboard. Notes will be playable in the piano roll using the "keyboard" on the left, but there's enough AU keyboards already released which are really good!
  • Haha, working hard to hit my scheduled released date. I think I gotten myself into deep water with this thread and picking so many new features for initial release :P

If push comes to shove and things get out of hand, I might consider releasing an initial version with slightly fewer features but all of them properly polished and working great. I'll always prefer fewer but polished features, to many but half-assed ones, so we'll se how this goes :)

  • Fewer, polished, and sooner makes sense. Get more input from users in the wild--describing feature requests in forums inevitably change after using the app in a workflow. Looking forward to playing with your creation!

  • I’m sorry, but totally missed your reply. This indeed sounds good, but the problem is not exactly rapidly tapping beats on a pad, but tapping multiple consecutive taps without releasing the finger or hand in between the taps on a single pad, so actually the pad sends muliple note on messages but only one note off message when the last finger is released. Some sequencers wait for the note off message to actually define/register a note, so register the multiple taps as one long note. This happens eg with the boppad or other samplepads in beatmaker, cubasis (luckily not in modstep and xequence).

  • I've now uploaded a beta for review. So this is getting close :)

    Here's another teaser.
