Koala is THE killer app
Small update out - lots of small fixes
Did you ever figure this out?
Pretty much, lol. I bought Koala when it first came out but didn't really try it out. It wasn't until May 2022 when I became obsessed with Ambient that I started to dig deeper into the app. That's when my mind was blown. I haven't really produced much Ambient since Summer of 2022 and can't be arsed listening to those old recordings I made. These days I'm all about Rock music.
Hey I've made this skin a while ago, based on a classic Polo Jacket, tested on 9.7" and 10.2" iPads:
New SP-404 Mk2 update allows it to control Koala directly. In collaboration with Elf Audio!!!
Shows this function at 5:33
Sick!!!
Dope!
I wonder if this means more keyboard shortcuts and MIDI mappings?
Here are (I think) two new settings in the app, from the latest update.
And I remember Marek saying that he was adding more keyboard shortcuts.
One difference I have discovered. With a connected QWERTY keyboard, the left/right arrow keys now switch between sample pads, instead of switching to the next bank of sample pads.
Also, arrow-down opens up the sample browser, and then you can browse samples with the arrow keys. Although I can't find a way to close the browser from the keyboard.
I would love to be able to switch banks via MIDI, and to toggle the keyboard mode on and off via a QWERTY keyboard shortcut.
@elf_audio is there a list of the keyboard/midi changes anywhere?
OK, the /? button now enables keyboard mode!!!!!
EDIT: And square brackets now switch between sample banks.
Another one: Hitting return when a pad is selected will sample into it, or play the existing sample.
Also, the , key toggles sample edit mode
I like where this qwerty thing is going. For me, I'd love a tiny bit more extension to cover the sequencing grid.
BONUS:
Might seem a bit of a stretch for a sample sequencer that started life on a touch screen device, but TBH, the touchscreen aspect is the thing I like least about Koala, the more I can do with qwerty keys on my macbook the happier I will be, and the more my muscle memory will kick in (Consequences of a life spent as a coder).
There is no changing the root note because the app has no idea what key the sample is in so you get scales relative to whatever samples you have there. If you want to change the “root note” you change the pitch of the sample in the sample edit page.
Is there a list of the devices with built-in MIDI mappings somewhere? I don’t see it on the Elf Audio support page but I know some of the cats around here are on the Beta team and might have more info!
If you take a look at the QWERTY mapping file, that looks like it might be a bug to me. @elf_audio ?
I emailed Marek and he said that right now it’s only the SP-404 mkii, but he’s planning to add others.
Is there anything I should know about combining a launchpad mini with koala ?
I presume the LP mini will be able to run on just power from an iPad ? ( I already have a cck adapter).
Update on my custom Koala keyboard. I bought a few sets of used key caps cheap, and I’ve added some to make the layout easier to read.
For example, the red 0 key is record, the pale blue keys (in Koala blue) mark the scene selection keys. Yellow enters edit mode, and the other blue PRT SC key toggles keyboard mode.
I added the line of TGBN both to mark off the 4x4 grid of sample pads on the left, and also to mark B and N (mute and solo).
It’s a bit of an explosion in a paint factory, but it works. And the different-sized caps also help differentiate by feel.
this is awesome!
I made this video a few months back for a friend who hates AUM and wants to stay inside koala as much as possible. Hopefully this helps people new to AUM or koala to learn how to add effects to their sounds and bring those treated sounds back to koala as quickly as possible and be back on their way making music. And sorry for the bad audio quality. I’m not like a pro YouTuber. Lol
