Are there any other reverb effects that use a Convolution engine other than Rooms?

edited January 2014 in General App Discussion

I would like to load some IR files for use with BIAS. Is Rooms! the only reverb that will do this? Its IAP is $7.99 so wondering if I should go for it or buy AudioReverb or AUFX:Space instead.

Anyone have any thoughts or advice?

  • The one in Auria also supports IRs.

  • A standalone is what I'm going for. I'm not ready to buy Auria quite yet.

  • There is an app called SpaceSampler, it's for the iPhone and there is a free version. From what I can tell it uses IR files but as far as I know you can only use the built-in files. Looks like there are 15 IR files included and it does have export options including Audiocopy and paste. This might be something you can use.

While Audioreverb sounds really good, it's by no means a convolution reverb unit really. You can't load your own IRs. I'm guessing it's one part PR and that a handful of the verbs presets in there are perhaps based on some built in IRs. Still, great reverb unit. Very versatile sound wise, and can give some extreme and huge reverbs without becoming too static.

  • This does appear to be a gap. If Rooms allowed you to add IRs or SpaceSampler got on the bus, they might be in a good position.

  • Does Rooms allow user IRs?

  • Yes. It'll work as an AB effect. A $7.99 in app purchase gets their Convolution engine and the ability to install your own IR files. Not the prettiest app out there but... And I really don't know much about them (Convolution reverbs) other than IR files can be used to simulate guitar cabs.

Here is the support page http://polaron.de/Rooms/index.html

I'm on an app buying spree today - bought AudioMastering and Level.24 (awesome, btw). Thinking about Derek's loop set and a reverb. I just have not decided if I should get the in-app convolution, AUFX:Space or AudioReverb. Decisions, decisions.

  • Works ok for me. What are you experiencing exactly?

  • Rooms! Is really the only IR loading iphone app right now, but it really works great with IRs. SamplerSpace can be made to work with custom IRs and sounds great too, but you have to modify the listing file manually and it currently doesn't support audiobus or IAA. Markus, the Rooms! Developer, seems to be responsive to requests too.

  • Also, SamplerSpace doesn't work with ACP in iOS 7 for some reason.

  • Well, just went ahead and got the convolution engine. I guess we'll see how it works out.

  • Well... it really sounds good. Adding custom IRs might be a pain as Rooms uses a special format to get them into the app. Going to take some work but definitely not impossible.

  • You should also try some cabinet IRs if you are using it with guitar

  • Absolutely. :)

  • Love to hear more on this!

  • Now I just need more RAM and space so that I can load these:

    :-)

  • Wow! Score!

  • First time I've heard of rooms. Must have been really hidden in the app store. Cheers!

  • Can anyone advise on how this sounds with IRs? Any issues? I'm wanting to give it a go, but I'd like some feedback first.

  • Other than my guitar playing it sounds pretty good. Something to work with.

I used BIAS, the SLO100 amp and bypassed the cab as the AB source. Rooms with a Soldano IR (Soldano412B-S12Xs-SM57-Cap-0_5in) file as an effect. Audioshare as the destination. First pass is bypassed cab. Second is with the IR.

Loading IR sets isn't as easy as it could be. You have to download them from a web server. You also have to create some txt files to make the app add them correctly. In all it is a lot of work so far. I installed Abyss, created the directories etc. If you have a ton of IR files this will be a pain in the ass. If enough people bug the dev maybe he'll do something to make this easier. Otherwise it is going to take a long time to get any large amount of IRs installed. Once installed they easy to work with. It's just going to be a ponderous process otherwise.

  • Thanks @wayni. The process sounds pretty cumbersome. I can use IRs in Auria, but I'm hoping for something more lightweight.

  • On my very long "apps to make" list, there's a Convolution effect app :)

  • I am happy to see that Rooms! is discussed so extensively!

Concerning the format of the IR files: AAC, AIFF, CAF, M4A, MP3 and WAV are supposed to work. Please contact me if you encounter a file that makes problems or if you have some exotic format that you would like to be supported.

IR files can be copied from the Audio Files View to the IR library. For a greater number of IRs this is not convenient, that's why I added the option to download IR sets from a web server. This is not perfect, either, as it needs some preparation (and a web server). I am open for suggestions. Maybe zip packages that you can send to your device by e-mail or transfer via iTunes file sharing or Dropbox?

Rooms! 3.0 does not support iOS 5 because the iPad 1 can handle only extremely short IRs. It was brought to my attention that there are use cases even for these short IRs. So Room! 3.1, which I hope to submit within the next two weeks, shall reintroduce support for iOS 5.1.1.

Furthermore 3.1 will let you set the Audiobus filter buffer size. This is currently fixed at 1024 frames. On the newest devices, 512 frames for not too long IRs and maybe 256 frames for very short IRs may make sense.

A mono mode, which has a lower computational demand, is planned, too. Currently the left input channel is convolved with the left IR channel, and the right input channel is convolved with the right IR channel.

    I appreciate all user feedback.

    Markus

  • Looks like the UI could use some work too. Thanks for joining us dev.

  • Thanks for joining Markus. I'm thinking that using Audioshare to pull IRs over might be the best approach.

  • Hey thanks for stopping by, Markus! It's awesome that you are here and I

I tried to restore purchases so that I could use it on my iphone as well but it wants to charge me again.

Also, for adding files I think the best method would be from a zip. Provided it were to appear in the "Open in..." dialogue this would allow multiple files to be added at once from Audioshare or Dropbox. I don't know if it if possible to handle the zip's directory structure to in a way to organize them into sets such as it would if installed from your web server but that would definitely be a plus.

The knowledge that individual IR files can be added from the file view screen already makes life so much easier as I can "Open in..." from Dropbox/Audioshare to Rooms! easily enough. But only one at a time like you said.

The UI could use a makeover for sure. It's inconsistent with common buttons and not very pleasing to look at.

Lastly - this is the only standalone convolution reverb with IR install functionality at this time. It's been mentioned by @funjunkie27 that you are well positioned with this app. Seriously - you could take over the world with this app. :)

  • So, I know it isn't standard, but using ifunbox you can put folders in the library with your own IRs. I've loaded hundreds of them and they are organized by folder. It's really quite easy and fast.

  • The news gets better and better! Thanks for the tip. I've got a ton of them to add.

When this drops, it's sure to be my go to Convolution Reverb.
