I use a high end Sandisk on my MacBook Air and the IO speed 'feels' to all intents and purposes equal to the onboard SSD. The only problem I have with it is that it's so small I sometimes forget it's attached when transporting my Air from a to b.

Incidentally Samsung currently have a killer deal on their T5 portable SSD's. You can pick up a 500Gb model for under $100. I purchased a bunch of them so that I can swap workflows easily on desktop projects that require a lot of cache storage (as is the case with 4k AV jobs, especially anything to do with 3d).

Here's a link to the UK Amazon listing. You should be able to find stock easily in your locale too.

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Portable-SSD-T5-500GB/dp/B074MCM721/

Ooh that is a good deal - I normally buy those as internal drives ( I boot from them to speed up my old MacBook Pro) and stick them in a case, but that saves the hassle.

    Nice option :)

I usually buy internal SSD and a housing for a good deal.
eg this sandisk 480GB is currently £45 https://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-PLUS-Sata-Inch-Internal/dp/B01F9G46Q8/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=500gb+ssd&qid=1560417553&s=computers&sr=1-3
And then use with something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/AmazonBasics-SATA-Hard-Drive-Enclosure/dp/B01N5RLG2C/ref=sr_1_10?crid=2LK7WK6C52U1N&keywords=ssd+usb+3+enclosure&qid=1560417753&s=computers&sprefix=ssd+usb+3,computers,204&sr=1-10
Some of these housing things can be badly made though, not tried the amazon one yet but hopefully they last ok.

I've got a couple of (now populated) Sandisk enclosures knocking about (you get them when you purchase Sandisk SSD kits for upgrading existing HDD's) and a couple of of SATA (I/II/III) disk caddies too. I like the Samsung portable SSDs as they're reliable and well built (up to bumps and scrapes of the urban jungle formally known as my rucksack!), as well as being performant.

My main workstation is a HP Z variant. These have built in removable HDD/SSD slots. And then we move on to my Synology, as you can probably tell, I'm a terrible horder of digital data. :)

Ah, those Synology boxes look the business. I'm using Icy Box for my backup hard drives.

Very tempted by that portable T5 deal - seems very cheap for what it is.

  • Yawn, wow, :( It’s about time.

  • It just struck me.
Does iPadOS support external USB CD/DVD-Rom drives when they are hooked to the USB-Port?

And well, how does iPadOS react if the drive contains *.ipa files?
(I read somewhere that only 'files' would be support and no 'executables').

Would be interesting to hear from those running iOS/iPadOS 13...

Just asked this question over at Amazon regarding the external CD drive and have not recieved an answer yet. I’ll keep you posted if I get anything.

As I can see it, no CD/DVD-drive support into iPadOS13 beta 1...
I have both an Samsung external DVD-writer that demands no external power to run (I have had this one earlier to my (now retired) MS Surface Pro 4)), and an Apple Superdrive that is powerhungry and demands direct input into iMac/Macbooks for use...

No one of this show up into Files on my iPad 12.9"...
    I can live with this...
An iOmega 500GB external USB-drive runs very good into Files (through powered USB-hub), that enough for me (together with support for memorycard and USB-sticks)...

Goodie, I plan to populate my hub with more storage devices too when iOS13 drops :)

What about *.ipa files on a drive?
Do they show up at all?

This would be an awesome way to backup up older versions of apps directly on device when a new updates drop.

I think this Sidecar thing is probably the best feature of iPadOS13 och MacOS Catalina!
Just tested Affinity Designer for Mac on the iPad Pro 12.9" - lovely speed and performance! Almost like to run it native on iPad!

  • Or, why not run Logic Pro X 10.45 on your iPad Pro?

My gut feeling is that Apple will make this function superior to the other screen mirror apps out there...
The speed with cableconnection is pretty amazing!
Just wished they also would sending the audio also to iPad, not only the graphics...

Since you’ve got Catalina installed already could you do me a favor and download the demo of Renoise and see if it runs on it? (From what I’ve understood Catalina removes carbon support completely breaking a lot of legacy apps even if they are 64 bit).

Renoise demo can be found at renoise.com

I've only used it a couple of times, due to lack of storage on my iPad. With the new iOS I can save videos onto an external drive - so I can actually use the thing!

Yes if anything beats file sizes of audio, it’s video, this makes things easier and more sensible too.

Yeah me too, used it a only a few times. Same thing with the affinity apps too, now that we can save to external disks it means sharing projects with desktop is much easier. :)

Yeah, really looking forward to doing that - gives me an excuse to upgrade to an iPad that supports a pencil too!

Tried Renoise this morning, or, at least, tried to install it, but MacOS Catalina refuse to accept Renoise as an trusted developer...

Normally you open settings and tick in that you can install from everywhere, and a button that says ’install anyway’...
But my iMac refuse to accept it so the installer is going into a loop...

I will try again later... Time for some late breakfast now with my tired wife...

On the Renoise.app icon when you start the app (only needed the first time).
(Ie. Control+Click on the app Icon and choose open).

If you don't have ReWire installed it will ask to install it but you can skip that step if ReWire is not needed.

  • Is there anyone with a recorder like a zoom H5, Tascam DR 40 or so? Can you put the recorder directly to the ipad and access the internal file system? That would be really great... Weeks ago I was thinking about a mobile workflow of sampling, fieldrecording and stuff like that with a mobile recorder and the iOS system, then came the new files app and opening of the filemangement in iOS 13.... the rest is history. Only more convenient would be if you can hook up the device directly to the ipad ;)

Don't have iOS13 installed but my Zoom H1 has the option to show up as a mass-storage device or a sound-interface.
That selection is made when the device starts up.

It already works as a audio-interface for the iPad so I have no fears that the mass-storage mode will not work...
(The only 'issues' is that there is no monitor on/off switch on the H1 so the input will always be heard).

  • One nice use for the new files functionality - since the entire App file directory shows up on the Mac, you can quickly move files between devices. Especially helpful for Apps w/out cloud integration. Metagrid is an example - it doesn’t have the ability to share Presets, but I can quickly copy/paste over its entire directory between my devices. The mobile files updates are great, but if you use iOS alongside a Mac the Files+Sidecar really make the 2 an extension of one another.
