Op-z firmware update - Audio and midi over usb

Lots of new features in the new op-z firmware update, including sampling through the mic or usb.

But, what has me most excited is that the op-z now shows up as a usb audio source in AUM. No more audio interface needed! You can record jams, apply effects, even use the op-z as a midi source inside AUM. It’s almost a dream come true.

  • Just installed it, the OP-Z is growing up. So small, but so powerful. What a fantastic update, thanks TE.

  • so glad I picked one of these up.

Cuckoo has a nice video showing how he's using the Sampler feature on the OP-Z:

A video about the new firmware

  • Dayum audio over usb... sweet.

  • how much sample storage does it have ?

  • Magnific..
This morning bought one unit and few hours later read about the update, sampling..but this is more excited to me too..

  • is the how good is the sample editing and can you edit destructively?

There’s no screen dude so it is what is... Editing minus attached screen wont be great. Especially in the drum sampler...Dunno if it even has snap to zero crossings etc among the million keyboard shortcuts?

You can’t truncate so no destructive editing, every sample is set length of 6 or 12 seconds. Not sure if the Z can even resample etc?

It’s better than it was before for sure, but still in a ‘you’re gonna have to work for this and deal with annoyance’ kind of TE way. And I predict a £150 2 in/out jacks module incoming...

    btw @Jumpercollins, thanks man

even with screens I mainly use my ears so no waveform view isn't a big deal to me but everything else you said is. I dunno why TE acts like art/function is so complex just put some truncation in the sampler man :#

@ion677 : It says “click to update “ on the TE website. I can’t do that straight into my iPhone/iPad can I, using a usb cord? Or do I have to go to an actual computer (I’m all iOS at the moment ).

  • Why is it important to truncate a sample? So you can use the space to add more sound?

Nope. Still need a computer. Maybe it’d work with powered hub and ipados when it comes out.

    Ok, thanks @ion677

yeah but pretty much I share eyeohess opinions on the opz in general, I just don't want to wait I mean c'mon it's the future already

  • Went out and bought a usb c to lightning cable. Not supported. Only works with the Apple camera adapter.

Curious if the sampling has ‘threshold start rec’ and ‘bars sync’ options?

    No. Manual only.

I love this sampling feature so far, but I agree with you on the limitations. The lack of audio input is very annoying. If I hook it up to my iPad via USB, then I can't connect my iPad to my mixer, which means I can't sample direct from a guitar, or other instrument. I could use Enso as a kind of buffer, but at that point it stops being live sampling.

Why can't the 3.5mm jack work as an input? I tried it with a cable that has an inline remote, but the audio quality is terrible (maybe my levels are off?).

It's such a shame. The sampling is so good otherwise. I've already got the makings of a crazy new track, just from sampling and slicing a guitar part, and using the step components to mash it up. It's as good as an Octatrack at mangling.

Please could you explain in detail how you do this as I am puzzled and cannot find how to do this. Are you using the usb cable? AUM shows OP-Z as usb in put and the output is usb also with no control over volume and no effects working. I am not very used to AUM so maybe doing something wrong? Thanks so much.

  • Any detailed tips on connecting OP-Z and iPad using AUM greatly appreciated ie which cables and set up as I have been a bit frustrated trying to record OP-Z into AUM and also use effects in the chain. I seem to have missed something as it is not working for me as yet! Thanks

  • Unfortunately, it seems you still need an audio interface with the OP-Z and iPad... while OP-Z shows up as both an input and output in AUM, the output is only good for sampling into OP-Z. There's no way to monitor that audio going back into the OP-Z except in sample mode.

The worst thing is, if you have an iOS device without a headphone jack, there seems to be no way to monitor the audio out of AUM at all (or at least I haven't found a way) since iOS only allows one audio device over USB...

So, I think the only viable way to mangle and mix OP-Z audio in AUM is still using an audio interface. :-(

Hopefully TE adds an "audio interface" mode to allow directly monitoring the audio coming into OP-Z over USB. Then you could do it all with just an OP-Z and iPad, which would be super cool.

  • @EyeOhEss I agree. It's no Octatrack, but the sample chopping is totally comparable to the Octatrack's random slices.

Now, I wonder if the OP-Z's pitch bend can act like the crossfader, and morph which slices are played…?

For iPad's with a headphone output, enable 'Multiroute Auto' in the settings of Audiobus 3. This way the sound will be routed both to the USB and the headphone output. Now you can monitor your sound.

  • @EyeOhEss

Also how many user samples of each type (drum/synth) can you store on the device?

I think ten in each track. So 10x4 drum samples, and 10x4 synth samples. I shall check, though. Plus each of those samples can have its own (14) presets -- ADSR, LFO, filter, etc.

Are user sample patches global across projects?

    Yes.

Is there Filter/drive/LfO per (saveable) user patch?

Yes. Except the arp, which has no LFO.

Can you have a sample instrument on all tracks?

    Yes.

Can you arpeggiate sliced (drum) samples, or is it just the only one (synth) track that you can use an arpeggiator on?

No. The arp track is a synth track. You can fake arpeggios with step components though.
