@AndyPlankton that is a very true statement. It happens to me all the time. I will be mucking about and think, that would be some good content. Then I realize I am not setup for videos. So then by the time I set things up the moment would be lost.

I'm trying to get setup for recording performances, I'd imagine the same will be true of that, "Damn I wish I'd recorded that" :)

While I got your attention...wonder if you might be able to point me in the right direction on a couple of things.

I have an AUM session with RuismakerNoir (using built in SEQ), Rozeta Bassline and Collider, 1 x atom piano roll. I am trying to record the MIDI out from this into Xequence 2 on my phone, so I can transfer the MIDI to the iPad...

I am struggling with a couple of things...
How do I get the MIDI from Atom to come out on it's own channel ? I cannot find any control for which channel it gets sent to ?
Once I have a multi-track session recorded in Xequence 2....I export the MIDI file....then via dropbox transfer it to the iPad, when I open that MIDI file in Xequence 2 on the iPad it is all on a single track ? I undertsand that a MIDI file cannot distinguish between different devices, but it can determine which channels.

Currently, when you export a MIDI file, Xequence only creates separate MIDI file tracks for instruments, not track lanes. That is something I want to make configurable in a short term update.

    See also the FAQ:

OK, I realise my mistake....I was adding a new track in the main view and then changing the MIDI Source channel in it's settings.....I now think I have to create a new instrument under the MIDI icon instead ?

Yes, that's it. It's a bit unintuitive now that Xequence 2 normally has automatic track management, so that's why there's going to be a choice in an update.

Would someone be so kind as to show me how to route Patterning 2 into Xequence 2 and explain to me the reasons you would want to?
I’ve been having a bit of trouble figuring this out and understanding the potential applications.

    😉👍🏻
    Thanks!

I can't imagine why you would want to give up all the probability and variation baked into Patterning's sequencer.

Well said. My thoughts exactly but I feel like I’m missing something.

You don't have to do everything in Xequence 2.
Try setting up Patterning to receive MIDI Clock from Xequence 2 and let Patterning follow Xequence's transport. Best of both worlds.

Excellent idea. I wish this kind of thing was second nature to me. I'm guessing you're a longtime midi guy, and have experience with hardware. I'm (until very recently) all iOS, and I don't even think about clock unless something isn't working. I am going on a mission to see if I can find a clear explainer of how midi clock works.

It can be confusing and I’ve been working with midi for years. There’s always something to learn and things to remember. I get overwhelmed sometimes because while I love all these amazing apps, they often have a learning curve that I don’t always have the time or patience to master. Patterning is the exception though as i think even a child could figure it out and exploring it more deeply is pretty intuitive.

I've literally grown up with synths, MIDI and clock sync so that's always my first thought when I want machines to seamlessly work together (and maybe another reason why I have a hard time using Ableton LINK with its beat meditation seconds until it really starts... :D )

If any of you have questions about MIDI Clock, SPP (Song position pointer) and MIDI Status Messages, feel free to ask.

Sorry. That wasn’t my intention. I just flippin’ Love Patterning because i’m not a drummer, i can’t program beats but I get it instantly.

  • See, I am on the fence too. I bought X1 and all IAPs as well, and it never clicked because of the un-intuitiveness of the setup and clock management.

Now, if I want to see if X2 is better I have to spend another bit of cash, and if I don't think it's a significant change for the better that does click, then I am sitting on 2 apps that I won't use. That's on top of the others that may or may not be any good after AUV3 is the only way to do audio and apps like Animoog (and many others) may not even work anymore.

Are we getting further away from an audio workstation and more towards and modular environment where the only way to really complete things is sending it into a DAW on a PC/Mac.

In my opinion, the needle is driven by the answer to this questions

Do you complete Tracks on using your Ipad or DAW/PC/Mac?

As long as the needle is to the right and not moving to the left, then we are not heading in the right direction as a whole. Again, opinion only, but I have given this alot of thought because lately, I feel more inclined to go back towards the right because it seems more complications are getting brought into ios rather than solutions, and more apps are being released that are not fully complete. NS2, BM3, etc.

Never really got into the first version, so I skip this one.

    Thanks for the great wisdom.

The only conclusion is that you should use the apps you buy at a fast pace because new paid versions can be around the corner. This limited introduction price of version 2.0 is imo not the way I would follow as a dev. It forces you, as a consumer, to again update fast else you miss the offer. Would rather have seen a more relaxed possibilty through iap to upgrade to the 2.0 version if you already own the first version. It's just more relaxed. No problem to pay for a substantial update but this goes to fast for me.

My "dream workflow", requires an intuitive full-featured MIDI editor with "MIDI time stretching" for composing the way I find most inspiring for me.

I have... Xequence1, BM3, NanoStudio2, Cubasis, Gadget, Atom, and Auria Pro.

So far Auria Pro has been my best App for the way I want to compose. But Auria Pro tends to confuse me due to it's complexity, and I found that it's MIDI time stretching capability has so far not worked for me as well as I had hoped. I had hoped Auria Pro would be the one, but maybe I could just say it doesn't "feel" like my "Dream App".

Xequence 2 seems to come closest to being my "iOS music composing Dream App".

And after all the money I've invested in iOS synths, DAW's, "Gadgets", Effects, and App's like Blocs Wave and Launchpad. For me $9.99 is a small price to pay to "FINALLY" have an App that has a great potential for becoming the center of my iOS music composing universe.

I'm not saying Xequence 2 will replace my need for using iOS DAW's, AUM, Audio Bus, or the host of other Apps I have.

My hopes for Xequence 2, is that it can become my primary tool for "capturing my musical inspirations", and transforming those musical ideas into edited MIDI files that are fully ready to import into a the workspace of a full featured iOS DAW. Ready for recording with additional instrument tracks, in the traditional way.

@slicetwo as @rs2000 has so lovingly pointed out already 😉, Xequence has extensive drum mapping support including more than 40 factory drum maps, which of course also include Patterning 😎

You're epic! I'll have to really dive in. Quick question. How do I find other patterns I have made but have removed from the time line? I keep losing things. Haha.

Thanks :) Oh, you have to watch out -- once you delete the LAST occurence of a clip with a certain number (what you call pattern) from the timeline, then it's gone permanently! If you still have the project open now, just undo your way back.

Oh boy. Ok. That’s dangerous. Haha. Any chance you’re planning on implementing a clip selection tool?

Could you provide a few more details so I have a good idea of what that would do? :)

I use flstudio as my daw so I’m coming from that perspective. Basically, let’s say I make 5 different patterns on one track. There would be a menu per track if each pattern. BM3 has something like that, too. Just something to allow youm O choose previously create patterns that you may have removed from the timeline but want to put back.

Ah I see. The easiest way to achieve that in Xequence would be to just add an "attic" subtrack that is muted, and move your archived clips there. Also has the advantage that you can see all the contents at a glance.

Can lanes be minimized? That'd be a pretty good idea.

No, but you could also simply save a separate project as your "attic". Loading projects is very fast, and clips, notes and controllers can be copied between projects easily using the global clipboard (under the INSERT (+) menu in the bottom toolbar).

Both P2 and P1 send MIDI. Both support MIDI Clock and Ableton Link and IAA. P2 has ableton link start/stop (which P1 doesn't).

I record Patterning's MIDI output with no problems.

In Patterning 2, you need to make sure that the pads are set up to send MIDI (I usually have pads set up to send both MIDI and Audio).

In Xequence 2, make sure to turn on MIDI in the preferences.

That approach is certainly interesting. I haven't worked like that so far... but it can already be approximated really well by just keeping your "attic" clips either at the beginning or end of the song, on their respective tracks. You can even name clips individually (PROCESS -> Name). So I'm not sure a dedicated pattern library will come, but the idea is good and I'll keep it in mind!

  • Allmost perfect. I would pay much more for it, if there was MPE support. Is this on your roadmap? What I’m talking about is true MPE editing, like in Cubase or Bitwig. This would be a game changer on iOS!

    Hello everyone,

I'm very happy to announce the immediate availability of Xequence 2.0.0.

Xequence 2 represents a major milestone in the development of our mobile MIDI workstation. It takes everything that users loved from Xequence 1, and makes it all even more efficient, more robust and faster, while also adding many significant new features.

INTRODUCTION PRICE OF JUST $9.99, so that all existing Xequence users have a fair upgrade path (this includes ALL FORMER IN-APP PURCHASES!)

    https://itunes.apple.com/app/id1464669442?mt=8

We thought Xequence also deserved a shiny new website, so there's that:

    http://seven.systems/xequence2/

Existing Xequence users: Here's what's new in Xequence 2:

    http://seven.systems/xequence2/en/new-in-2/

Report any issues, comments and suggestions here, I'll be happy to answer any questions and consider all input for improvements!

    Happy composing!

    I got it.

    Great job.

Going to be using it with hardware mainly so looking forward to it.

Have a new synth en route being overnighted so gonna be a Xequence weekend! 2.0

@tja I like trying to minimize the different apps I switch through. I really just want something that will host multiple custom drum samples in one channel for the ease of sketching out ideas. I also found that trying to line up the song mode in Patterning2 with Xequence was really annoying, unreliable, and time consuming, so if I could sequence everything from Xequence, I'd be all good.

I’ve only been skimming the conversation about this, but it seems to me that AudioLayer would meet all your needs. It’s not specifically a “drum” sampler. It’s a sampler that can work with any kind of samples, drum or not. I use it for all my drum kits that I build. You just map samples to the keys (I stick to GM drum mapping) and save your kit.

    @dreamsaremaps and @DCJ I'll check out Vatanator.

I guess I should also figure out the MIDI drum mapping for Patterning2.

To send midi to Patterning 2? There’s a Patterning 2 drum map included in Xequence.

That's all I can ask for! Haha.

Thank you. I have Korg Gadget 2 and I like it, but I find the music editor (piano roll?) in it quite limited. It is very difficult to edit a piece and was hoping to find a small (not full DAW) application that can improve that aspect. Perhaps, I would even edit the Midi in Xequence2 and send/import it to Korg Gadget 2 for further processing. Is this a proper use of Xequence 2? I am having no luck finding any videos of it, and only a few of the first, so I am trying to make sure I fully understand it.

You're on the right "track" there (no pun intended), Xequence + Gadget are really a dream combination (indeed, the two demo projects that are included with Xequence use Gadget as the sound generator).

Exporting the MIDI from Xequence to Gadget as a file does not really work well, because Gadget's MIDI import is a bit limited.

But there's no real need to do that -- you can finish your entire composition and arrangement in Xequence, there's nothing you can't do via that route.

For the final step though -- getting the audio of your song out of Gadget -- you'll either have to record the audio using an interface, or host Gadget in AUM or Audiobus and then record its output into an audio file. That's the only thing that is not doable with Gadget + Xequence alone.

Another way to go about it is to record Xequence 2’s midi output into Gadget once the arrangement is ready for audio export. It was always easy with Audiobus, but with Link Start/Stop even that’s not strictly necessary. You just need to work in chunks of 16 bars or less.

  • Hello,

I'm with most of peoples who asked for videos of the new workflow. particularly because I bought the app a month ago and didn't like it. Sure the new version is appealing but don't want to spend another $10 if ... Thanks !

Word. While not ideal, at least there are workarounds. I'll still hold out hope for a master list of patterns, though.

That approach is certainly interesting. Is it correct I can only use 1 way ?

    @dreamsaremaps and @DCJ I'll check out Vatanator.

I guess I should also figure out the MIDI drum mapping for Patterning2.

To send midi to Patterning 2? There’s a Patterning 2 drum map included in Xequence.

I'll have to check out both of those things. Audiolayer may be a good idea.

You might want to look at Chameleon AUv3 Sampler Plugin by 4Pockets.com https://apps.apple.com/us/app/chameleon-auv3-sampler-plugin/id1456474953 as well. It’s like AudioLayer, but simpler in some ways. I think it only allows one sample per key though. With AudioLayer, you can have different samples play depending on how hard you hit the key (among many, many other features), but that power comes at the expense of a bit higher complexity.

    Right

    But directionally

    Can I use either way?

    Left or Right had dominant.

I bought it I am wondering if there is a setting for this?

That I can have it face the other way

There is a comprehensive set of videos for Xequence 1. Most of it applies to version 2 as well.

There are links to it from the Audiobus wiki Xequence page.

    I got it.

    Great job.

Going to be using it with hardware mainly so looking forward to it.

Have a new synth en route being overnighted so gonna be a Xequence weekend! 2.0

Thanks, happy to hear you're having another go! :) I seem to remember you didn't quite click with the separation of instruments and tracks in Xequence 1 -- so you'll be happy to know that tracks are now managed automatically by default in Xequence 2, so you don't have to create, sort, delete or assign them, that's all automatic. All you do is setup your MIDI connections on the Instruments screen (MIDI tab at the top left).

  • Am I able to use Xequence 2 to send midi audio to the Yonac Galileo 2 (and their other apps like this) in the same was as you can with Gadget 2?
