@SevenSystems I am noticing that my Xequence sessions are having trouble with tempo saving. I use it mostly now with AUM and even if I save my Xequence session again and again at 82bpm.. more then often it will open at 120bpm. Any thoughts on why this is happening?

Yes, this is unfortunately a side effect of Ableton Link -- whenever that is active, any other Link-enabled entity will be able to reset the tempo.

I'm not sure if this can be solved in an elegant way -- many other apps also struggle with this.

There may also be an issue in how Xequence handles this of course... do you know any other Link-enabled app that handles this better? I would then have a look.

So even though my AUM session is at 82... and when you first open AUM it goes to 120.. but if I wait till my project in AUM is completely loaded it will show 82. Then after that when I open Xequence it still links at 120? Where is it getting that info from if my AUM session is already down at the right tempo?

    Just curious.

I was having similar issues. Ableton Link really needs a "keep master option."

Xequence 2 kept reverting to a tempo of 127 that Patterning 2 had set in an old project even though it had long been closed and AUM was set at 103. It got too difficult to recreate and explain the issue so I live with it.

Sorry, I had just had to chuckle at this... I always much preferred MIDI sync instead of Ableton Link... but everyone kept saying that Ableton Link is "essential" in a sequencer and one of the BEST things about it would be that it REQUIRES NO MASTER/SLAVE :D :D :D now you have the salad! (German expression)

There's a reason why absolutely every sync system on Earth from sequencers to airplanes to spaceships has a master/slave relationship!

(on another note: there was a dedicated section in the Ableton Link developer documentation which dealt with this problem, and I thought I had adhered to those guidelines. Maybe I should have another go. However, it seems to be a widespread problem so either no developer reads that, or even following those guidelines to the letter doesn't prevent the problem from happening (logically)).

How can you transpose a track/clip from the arranger page?

Not currently possible, but extensive non-destructive per-track transpose features (similar to the delay / swing sliders) are strongly under consideration for a future update.

Is there any way to add a section of, say, 8 empty bars in the middle of all your clips in arrange page to introduce a new section, without selecting a hundred clips and manually moving them 8 bars to the right?

Not automatically, but a global "Insert / Delete Time" feature is under consideration for an update as well.

How do I move an instrument up/down? ie/ I want my bass underneath the drums, not five spots away..

You can do this from the up/down arrow buttons in the track's or instrument's settings menu ("..."). Moving an instrument or the "main" track of an instrument will also move all sub-tracks. (if Automatic Track Management is enabled).

Can you collapse controller data ?

It is not possible to collapse individual tracks, but you can keep both notes and any number of controllers in a single clip so they only occupy a single arranger track.

Any way to extract/explode midi notes from clip?

Yes. In the Pianoroll editor, in the INSERT (+) menu, you can use the clipboard to copy and paste notes (or controllers) between clips or even between projects.

    Change time signature during song?

Sorry, time signature changes are not available currently.

Turn all solo/mutes that were on, back off again in one click?

Not currently possible, but well worth consideration for an update!

    :)

The only thing I like about Link is that it's generally a consistent way to sync and in the case of AUM really the only viable option.

Still I don't know why there isn't an option for devs to make their app the Link "master."

Probably because you'd be giving apps like Auria Pro, Cubasis, and GarageBand even more excuse to continue to refuse to be a slave.

I like the idea of having whoever sends the start/stop become the master.

There are pretty good reasons for audio apps not to slave on iOS... (the required constant re-sampling eats CPU and sounds crappy if not done right).

I don't understand some of the MIDI apps that don't slave, though.

Its not trivial to do even with just midi. Xequence 1 couldn't slave and even Xequence 2 still needs to take a breath before catching up to tempo changes for the time-being. And we know how talented mr. sevensystems is.

Still, it's a badly needed thing as long as there are so many of us not content with any of the completely self-contained DAW environments.

Oh man 😉 that puts a lot of pressure on me 😂

I must admit though that Xequence is a special case in that it has been deliberately designed for NOT being able to change the tempo while playing and that meant that a lot of shortcuts could be taken during development.

Even then, if it were able to follow EXTERNAL tempo changes, it would always lag behind those by the "MIDI Pre-Buffer" setting. No way to avoid that even with the talent of 10 Albert Einsteins 😉 (an internal tempo track could be followed smoothly and instantly though once it were available).

  • ahh. So a no-win situation. Need to sacrifice timing accuracy to follow tempo changes. Tough spot.

I wonder if slewing to tempo changes would be a practical approach.

Well, probably in many situations, but not all. For example, if a song suddenly wants to have 4 bars in half tempo, that change MUST musically occur instantly, otherwise it would simply sound stupid 🙂

But I do wonder if there's ANY combination of software, mobile or desktop, that can handle such a situation cleanly, always.

Personally of course, it all doesn't bother me at all anyway -- I have 2030 songs in my music library (and trust me, I know every second of every single one of them from memory), and not ONE of them has a SINGLE tempo change 😂 I guess it's just not my thing.

(I do of course see and respect that my users are different and that's why I keep it firmly on the roadmap!)

Just a little info about the upcoming 2.1.0 update. It is mainly a maintenance update with lots of improvements and fixes, but also contains one major new feature that should have a large impact on your everyday recording proceedings.

It will probably be another week or two until it drops as we're currently busy moving to Cork, but you can get excited already ;)

    --- Upcoming Xequence 2.1.0 update ---

    NEW:

    • MULTI-TAKE LOOP RECORDING: New "Separate tracks" mode (enabled by default) in settings -> [ MIDI / Recording ] -> [ Loop Recording in Arranger ] -- each new loop will be recorded onto a separate arranger track automatically. New takes are added only if notes or controllers have actually been played / received during that loop. Any and all takes can be previewed by just un-muting them one by one after recording. When the perfect take is found, tapping on the "..." menu of that take's track and then "Use this take" will delete all unused takes of the corresponding recording session with a single tap.

    GENERAL IMPROVEMENTS:

    • Toggling the song loop on or off during playback no longer causes a glitch.
    • Audiobus: Increased the number of available MIDI In Ports from 8 to 16.
    • Undo: Significantly improved intelligent viewport restoration after "Undo" in all editors.
    • Make loop progress indicator more visible during recording.
    • MIDI File Export: Each arranger sub-track can now be exported as a SEPARATE track in the MIDI file even if it belongs to the same instrument. New toggle "Separate sub-tracks" in MIDI export menu.
    • Arranger: It is now possible to delete the "main" track for an instrument without deleting the instrument itself (the next track below it will become the "main" track).
    • Arranger: Improved drawing of muted tracks.
    • Arranger: More accurate controller data previews.
    • Pianoroll: Only center the view horizontally on the new notes after using "Duplicate", not vertically.
    • MIDI Output: Optimize all editing operations so that they do not turn off running notes during playback when not logically necessary (for example, when editing controller data or note velocities).
    • Various optimizations.

MIDI FILE IMPORT IMPROVEMENTS AND FIXES:

    • More robust import of MIDI files with a large number of events or invalid events.
    • Fix for an issue where the very first controller event on a track sometimes wouldn't be imported.
    • Program changes are now imported at the correct position (i.e., not snapped to whole bars).
    • Prevent zero-length clips when a MIDI file track contains only one single controller event.
    • Make centered controllers like Pan and Balance actually use the "Centered" option.

    FIXES:

    • Corrected a few text labels.
    • Fix a possible crash in certain scenarios when recording during count-in with "Record during Count-In" disabled.
  • edited August 2019

Looking forward to all the good improvements!
Especially the Multi-Take loop recording! And the new Midi export function!
Thanks for all you do. :)

  • Xequence 2: providing MIDI for the Uber-DAW with AudioBus for Synth hiosting and Loopy HD to record tracks. "Best in Breed" in 3 lanes. AUM can be added for awesome mixing... Discuss and share insights.

Enso (loop), Atom in AUM work for very short loops of MIDI and audio but why use traing wheels when you could fly? Fly!

  • I mean, I’m humbled by your awesomeness! Thanks for all your hard work!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😌🎹🎼🐶

  • @McD @Tones4Christ Thanks 🙂 this is really a minor update but then again, progress is always good, even in small steps 😉

  • Hope you enjoy Cork! I spent a lot of wonderful time there on business trips back in the day.

Is this push-esque layout part of the 2.1.0 update?

Sorry, not sure what push-esque means? The feature in that video (record each loop iteration to a separate track) is part of the 2.1.0 update though, yes 🙂

  • @SevenSystems said:

The video gave me the impression you had added scale options to the grid layout.
Upon further investigation, it looks like you're just using the existing 'Sample Slicer' preset?

Any chance we'll see this feature added?

Oh, now I get it! Yes, sorry, that is just a "drum" map that linearly maps the 64 pads to every second MIDI note. I personally use it to chop up vocal samples etc. with a synth that can map note number to sample start. Maybe that map is confusing and should actually be removed from the factory maps.

And yes, auto-creation of musical layouts for the pads is on the roadmap.

  • Sorry for the newb question but how do I get it to start stop sync with AUM? I want to hit play on Xequence to start play on AUM

Turn on Ableton link with start/stop option in both.

Thank you. I tried that a few times before but I guess I just kept missing a step somewhere but I got it going now

  • Xequence 2 is a absolutely awesome and I’m really enjoying recording midi into it with Chords from Navichord and ChordPolyPad 😌❤️🎹
And then route those out to AUM and AB3 to drive KEW! So amazing!

Yes it is a great app.. wish it would go AU..

  • wimwim
    edited August 2019

Xequence 2 is one of the few apps I see no need for AU.
The piano roll, and a modular mini-timeline would be handy for jams I guess, but other than that I just don't see what AU adds. What am I missing?

  • I think what I really miss being in AUM and tweaking the synths it’s the ability to see the notes dropping into the timeline of X2. Or even playing X2’s awesome keyboard; but that one we can buy separately.
But AU is not needed imho.
