Reason 11 Rack VST!

  • I have downloaded the demo of version 10.

The retina thing is a bit weird. Parts of the UI are nice and clear which makes the low resolution of the rack gear appear even worse. I can read the retina labels really easily without glasses but have to concentrate to read the labels in the rack items.

In the transport, much of it is Hi rez, but bits like the level meters and delay comp button are lo res. Hopefully this means that Propellerheads have been making the interface hi rez for a while but haven't gone back to update the old parts yet. But the whole rack is lo res including the newest interments and effects.

Also, I'm not sure if anybody else has experienced this, but the UI is really sluggish and laggy.

Scrolling the rack is jerky on my 4Ghz core i7 iMac 27" 5K.

I switch to Logic and the UI is really slick and quick in comparison. Expect for when you use an old instrument like Ultrabeat which has a horrible UI which results in me almost never using it.

I'd love the rack items in Logic without reWire though. But the lack of hires rack instruments in Reason 10 has made me think again...

It may sound silly to consider not purchasing an audio app based on the number of pixels in the UI, but it really does matter. I hate using Logic's old plug-ins with the blurry Uis and tiny text designed for ancient monitors. And I'd dislike using Reason rack instruments for the same reason (no pun). It's actually unnecessarily hard for me to use. I can see more than well enough for most apps. It's only things like Ultrabeat and NN-19 that make me reach for my reading glasses.

And if I have to reach for my glasses (which I will inevitably have misplaced) it is bloody annoying. I hate software reminding me I'm getting old! And when it does, it reminds me that when you're old you're supposed to be grumpy.

To be fair you can hardly blame Propellerheads for not going back and re-engineering all their pre-retina UIs when Apple haven't even bothered, but I hope the rack VST/AU is actually retina. I'm not optimistic, but if it is I'll put my money where my mouth is and I'll buy it! If it isn't I retain the right to be a grumpy old git. ;-)

I’ve wanted to use the native Scream4 distortion plugin as a VST for yeeeeeears. I will be upgrading immediately.

  • @klownshed there is a workaround for stopping the laggy scrolling but I think it involves turning off retina assets in the app entirely. I did it awhile back because the laggy scrolling was driving me nuts. Google around for it I was able to find pretty quick. Unsure how to revert :(

Thanks. I’ve done that before with other apps that struggle shifting pixels on a 5k display.

To turn off hi Rez mode for any app on Mac OS is really easy. You just get info on the app in the finder and turn on ‘open in low res” mode checkbox (or similar— can’t remember the actual wording ;-)

I will try that with reason.

It wasn’t until earlier today that I realised that the Reason UI was partially retina.

Oh and obviously you just untick the checkbox in the get info window to revert to retina hi res mode.

  • Yeah it’s in a weird boat haha.

  • Anyone tried the beta yet. I'm in the queue after registration?

Does anybody know how the copy protection will work with the vst/au?

I have a desktop at work and a laptop so would need to do the log in thing with at least one computer for Reason.

That’s ok with the app but it could be a pain when you are opening projects in your DAW to have to log in to use the plug in.

I love the fact that there’s no copy protection nonsense on iOS.

Gonna have a go With FL Studio at some point too.. Also, Image-line have done it so you can use Waves Plugins now, with there latest update.. Which is cool.. So with iOS FL Studio projects, I can use Waves plugins to take it further..

The Reason 11 FAQ mentions it a bit...

Does Reason 11 have copy protection? How does it work?

Just as for previous versions, Reason 11 can be authorized in a couple of different ways:

    • Computer Authorization (for offline use)
    • Internet Verification (requires a connection to the internet)

Reason Rack Plugin is authorized with the same license and in the same way and you authorize the stand-alone version of Reason.

  • Might tempt me into the v11 upgrade, I’ve not used Reason for a while.

  • If I take to Ableton Live, the Reason rack may be in my future. What about purchased RE's though?

  • Far out! Excellent! Dope!

I was kind of disappointed that the Players couldn't be used prior to now. I find them incredibly useful and well-thought out. It'll be great to use them now in Logic!

Snaps to Reason Studios for meeting the deadline they committed to! Well done Props!

Your purchased REs work exactly as they do in Reason. (Not sure about 3rd=-party Players, as I only have the Reason ones.)

Good to know. Hope the 3rd party players work too as I'm into the Robotic Bean stuff. Thanks.

  • Has anyone tried Reason Rack VST in MPC 2.0? Working alright?

I beta tested Reason 11, so all reason plugins worked in Ableton (I’m a beta tester for Ableton too.. So got full & Beta version of Ableton 10.1.5 Suite).. Didn’t have any problems even when I was testing it out.. Now beta I’m testing Scaler v2.0... This is just like what I do in Cyprus... Test & Analytise swimming Pool water..... My parents should of changed my name to “Tester” when I was a nipper.... :D

MPC 2.6 (latest version) will not load VST3 so no Reason plugins for now but I have successfully loaded the Korg Gadget plugins, Dune 3, Massive X etc.,

@studs1966 Oh I love using Scaler such a fab midi tool for non keyboard trained users glad they are updating it hope for some more functionality goodies. I love the presets in Scaler very inspiring.

I wish a Scaler app for iOS with the same functionality would appear Tonality I suppose is the nearest.

V2 is awesome.. & its gonna get even better as time goes on. Its meant to be release by Plugin Boutique maybe January 2020.. But defo next years music expo.. People on the forum have mentioned for iOS (including myself)... Unfortunately i cannot post the video for it in what to come.. Beta 2 will be out next week i think (they have added more features).. Im writing tracks with (obviously to test it at the same time... :D )... Its running silky smooth at the moment.. For me that is.. You'll be defo blown away when its released... 80% of the tracks that has been released, has been made with Scaler.. Dev asked me if i would contribute some scales for them, after they heard a few of my tracks.. Mate, that made me feel like a proud puppy.. If it doesn't come across to the iOS platform, maybe our talented devs (@jimpavloff for example?) could create something as close to it?... Here is s a couple of examples where Scaler v1.8.1 was used.. Sorry for plug tho, but its an example of what i have done with Scaler:

I'll stop there.. I dont want to ''Pee'' people off here..... But you can get an idea.. Enjoy the tracks by the way, though it may not be everyone's "Cup of Tea"..

    Still no. ☹️

The Main thing that keeps me off Reason a lot. Some of the graphics is to tiny and no good zoom feature.

Don’t want to have to use dual displays or turn a monitor sideways for better results

Besides that it is one of the funnest pieces of software I’ve tried to make music.

For now for me On desktop it’s all Ableton and studio one... and logic now and then.

I’ve had it since V2.5, and I’m still squinting 😑. I did have my second monitor mounted sideways (on a low guitar stand as it didn’t have a rotate base) for a couple of years and dedicated that to viewing the rack. But recently, my 2010 iMac bit the dust and the new one has the 5K screen, so I’m really squinting now! 🤨 Hopefully RS will update the older parts of the DAW sometime soon (the newer instruments are much clearer) though. With the purchase of the new iMac, I figured I’d transition to LPX, and it sure is nice to have the entire Reason Rick available within Logic! My background was FOH sound on the road and then studio engineering, so Reason always made the most sense to me from a graphical point of view.

  • @sch What is this ... “ My background was FOH sound on the road ”

I really dig Reason but my eyes aren’t getting better.

@kinkujin, FOH? It's Front of House... mixing live bands. I spent about 10 years roadie-ing before transitioning over to studio design, construction and engineering. Essentially why the Reason paradigm of actual equipment, racks and cables appealed to me.
