$2800 though. Ouch.

Unfortunately the financing options for it are terrible.
i need a store near me to get one so I can actually feel how hard I will have to push the pads...that could get old if it is a finger killer. I also want to see if it goes anywhere that warrants me buying a digital synthesizer.
I would still like to find a one to one with novation summit as well...
That may be the fattest digital synth I’ve heard to date, but hearing it online and in person will not be the same.
udo know's panning though
I have the desktop Hydrasynth and the pad settings and AT settings are plentiful 👍
I recently got the keyboard version. Poly aftertouch…finally. It works beautifully and you can customize it a whole lot to your playing style and preferences. The actual synth aside, there are many hardware and software synths that supports incoming PA and using this keybed with those is totally awesome. Ok I’ve only tried it with Arturia Pigments but still. I’m gonna try it with the SWAM instruments on iOS and see how well it works with those, the ribbon isn’t pressure sensitive but an expression pedal might fix that..
I ended up buying the novation peak and the Hydrasynth desktop ....then I bought the arturia microfreak and the dreadbox typhon... I’m in happyville!!!!!
I’ve had the Hydrasynth keyboard for around a month and I absolutely love it. The poly aftertouch makes it super playable and the sound engine is very flexible and easy to program. The only thing that I hesitated about was I’d like 5 octaves rather than a 4 octave, but in practice it’s not too much of an issue. Definitely recommended.
Two new Hydrasynths:
$599 Hydrasynth Explorer: 37-note mid-sized Polytouch keyboard with polyphonic aftertouch and note-on/off velocity. Battery-powered. Seems like the same monotimbral 8-voice synth as the originals.

$1799 Hydrasynth Deluxe: 73-note Polytouch keyboard with polyphonic aftertouch and note-on/off velocity. Two Hydrasynth engines with 16-voice poly in single mode, or bi-timbral mode each with 8-voice poly.

I'd love a traditional MIDI controller with polyphonic aftertouch that didn't cost so much.

The battery powered aspect of the Explorer is cool, but I think I'd still rather have the pads from the desktop over mini keys. Love those pads myself, super fun to play.
Thanks, Phil! I thought it was funny that those ended up as back-to-back posts.
Man, I was close to finally breaking down and buying a Hydrasynth but now I'm glad I waited. 73 keys... gonna have to move some stuff around...
I’ve had my Hydra for a few months and don’t regret it at all, it is a fantastic keyboard. Although that big one does look mighty tempting, sound-wise it will be a monster, and I see they’ve added key off velocity as well.
The Explorer is cute like the CZ101.
Is this the least-expensive way to get polyphonic aftertouch in a traditional keyboard?
And can all of the iOS synths that accept MPE accept polyphonic aftertouch as a modulation source?
I picked up a GEM s2 last week for £120. 61 key poly and channel aftertouch with touch/release velocity and 2 sets of MIDI ports. Not convinced I’d want minikeys for the polyAT. Best option IMO would be a full sized weighted PolyAT MIDI controller.
It is certainly a low cost way to get Poly AT, and you get the fabulous full Hydra sound engine too. Poly AT and MPE are different, I would think most synths that accept MPE will also accept PolyAT (and some synths that are not MPE will too), but you should check, it is not a given.
I’d love to have an implementation of the CS80 for IOS that can be driven from my Hydra, even though I can get very close with Hydra’s engine.
Absolutely with you on this. And the Desktop is such a lot of synth for cira £600 (UK street price).
Having said that I have a 61 key Korg Microkey in the studio, as I like how compact it is. I generally only use it for Kontakt percussion libraries as my gorilla proportioned hands arn’t best suited to its diminutive dimensions. But if the Hydrasynth Explorer deliveres decent poly aftertouch even in microkey dimensions it might be worth considering. Definitely one for a music store visit or two, rather than a blind online purchase.
Thanks @TheOriginalPaulB I'll keep my eye out for the GEM boards with Poly-AT, though GEMs are hard to find here in the US. I suppose several of the old Ensoniqs may be worth looking into.
@PhilW I do miss my Microwave XTk, and its raw sound, would you say the Hydra is the closest? Blofeld is great, but didn't have the graininess (or all of the crazy filters) of the older Waldorfs.
I’ve never played a Microwave XTk but on paper it looks to have broadly similar architecture. I will say that the Hydra is very versatile with wave sequencing, it’s amazing Mutants, dual multi-filters, 5 envelopes and 5 lfos with very flexible routing, etc. add to that very expressive PolyAT and ribbon and you have a modern synth classic!
Note that the Explorer seems to be lacking the ribbon.
That's a powerful synth engine. It could be the ideal synth + poly-AT controller for a small battery-powered iPad+MPC/Octatrack setup.
Thanks Phil!
Hydrasynth is fantastic. I know right before I bought it I started to feel like the YouTube videos of it were sounding kind of shrill or brash, but after a little while with it i realized it was a non issue and I could avoid those tones. It’s an all around super versatile synth and poly AT kicks butt.
