I think for performance stability the unknown quantity of usb device speed means most of them would just use it for importing. Maybe I am also thinking this because I tend to use big files in apps that use disk streaming like BM3 and Cubasis
Also, the potential for willy/nilly path names with a usb device could be an issue most iOS devs would probably rather just skip. I imagine still imposing their own file structure is likely to give them fewer problems, particularly for things like Patterning or BM3 that have search options.
interesting thing about the ipads is screen resolution, does higher screen res increase CPU usage when using AU music apps within a host?
It is probably more of a GPU issue or at least I imagine should be if coded well (non-coder here).
That's what I'm hoping for,, it is entirely possible though that it could need to take a local copy of the file to be able to work on it....I hope not.
The blurb on the apple site has a picture of a thumb drive, with the caption, "bring in files from one of these" ...
Yeah, otherwise the 32gb wouldn’t be an option.
I was thinking the same thing. Since we run into crackles when messing with UI elements. I think 10.2 2019 will perform worse than 9.7 2018.
Nice phones, but I don’t have any words for this...
We all know that 64Gig is a joke in 2019
I genuinely think you would regret getting a 32Gb iPad, even if there were some possibilities with external storage. Many apps will not offer access, and app sizes themselves are only going to be getting larger. If you want your next iPad to be as long-lived as the Air 2 I would say 128Gb would probably be a minimum, because in 4 year's time even that is going to be considered very little IMO.
Speak with your wallet and don't buy it
I'll stick with my iPhone 8 for quite some time to come...
I’m not after the new phone, but doesn’t it look a bit disappointing? As far as I can tell, the only reason to buy it would be if you’re keen on photography, no? There’s no real ‘new’ stuff, is there? Just looks very incremental, and not worth upgrading my 7 Plus for.
Most of my iPads were 16gb until lately air 2 and pro 10.5 which were both 64. I’d be always struggling for space needing to lead a monastic life but with 64 I have to say I’m never beyond 25gb so I guess it depends. I’d likely survive with 32 but if you use sample libraries then better go higher. NeoSoul Studio alone is 4gb!
That indeed is very odd. On my iPads cpu is always at 30% while ram’s always maxed out! If they sold an iPad with x9 and 8Gb Ram I’d be all over it.
They could charge a couple of more dollars for 8 GB RAM instead of skimping on it (memory is cheap these days). On iPad Pro 2018 1 TB, they offered 6 GB RAM. That should have been for 512 GB model and it should have been 8 GB on the 1 TB model to future-proof them (but they want us to upgrade soon and keep spending more)
Heck, they could offer these jacks for an extra cost under Customize Your iPad page and they would sell a $hit load of them (but that would cannibalize their AirPods sales).
Yeah you're probably right, I'm using about 50gb for apps at the moment, but probably most of that is down to the way they each store a copy of any samples used/imported. I could probably get it down to 20gb but it'd creep up again, and future proofing would be a concern.
Yeah 64gb would do it for me I reckon. I'm nearly on 60 out of 64gb, but I could easily get that down. 128gb adds another £100 which I really don't need - particularly with the offline storage feature, crafty buggers.
They probably know USB-C design is flimsy compared to Lightning jack. USB-C on a frequently used iPhone would result in too many broken jack complaints and stain their reputation. USB-C may never come to iPhone
It's a shame their designs went from 100% safe MagSafe connector on the Mac to flimsy USB-C over years. Their patent for MagSafe is pointless now if they are not going to use it.
Yeah, Midnight Green is a cool and elegant color like the old Rose Gold
Blech, I am so not looking forward to the day that I have to downgrade to being headphone jackless.
That's the one bonus with the new one, we keep the jack. Shame it only supports the old Apple pencil though.
This is what I’ve found so far re RAM.
Can we collectively fill the blanks.
IPad 1: 256 MB
iPad 2 and iPad Mini: 512 MB
iPad 3, IPad 4, iPad Air, iPad Mini 2 and iPad Mini 3: 1 GB
iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 4: 2 GB
iPad Pro 10.5 and 12.9-inch: 4 GB
iPad Pro 9.7-inch: 2 GB
iPad 10.2 (2019) 3 GB?
iPad Mini 5: 3 GB
I am on the 10.5 pro now (bought one used) which I think is the best headphone jacked mobile (walking down the street) option for me. I just wish they would move the port to where the headphone jack used to be then I wouldn't care as much.
Use the end of a paper clip to check for pocket lint. It’s impossible to see but happens on every iPhone I’ve ever had.
Similar story as with mpixels vs aperture. The industry seems to rave about megapixels while the magic f value is almost always overlooked.
Eh, disappointed. Expected an immediate iOS 13 release.
But it would probably double their manufacturing cost because they would need two entirely separate factories for it 😉 (trust me, efficient manufacturing processes with volumes in the hundreds of millions is hard!)
Might look into second hand Pro prices, I’ll wait and see what the Air reviews are like first though...
Now this is just confusing and frustrating. nothing against you MonzoPro. But here’s the new outlook on iPads:
iPad Air - released in March 2019, with a 10.5” screen, basically looks the same as the 2017 iPad Pro 10.5” ... but its different, somehow... 1GB less ram, and uses the iPhone CPU that might or might not perform better than the Pro 10.5.
iPad 2019 - just announced this week. At quick glance it is the same size as the above Air and 10.5 Pro. Actually yes, it has exact same dimensions for height and width but it is thicker and heavier... who knows why. the screen is actually just a bit smaller at 10.2” which means the bezels are bigger. And otherwise it is exactly the same internals as the 2018 iPad 9.7”, which was a great device for early 2018... and by the way, it still has the same camera as an old iPad Air 2 (yes, why hello there October 2014).
iPad Pro 2018 - the only clearly defined iPad product, but now almost a year old. This iPad has a unique design and upgrades from previous generation across almost every spec, with price upgrades to match.
So... all that to say, I do not envy those who are trying to price out their options for an iPad right now in the $700 and lower price range. Such a confusing mess.
I’m totally confused - does that mean the March (cheaper) Air is better than the new one?
Lol, not at you but at Apple because its such a mess. Yes, without question the iPad Air 2019 is better (Lighter, thinner, bigger screen, better camera, faster CPU, etc) than the “new iPad” announced yesterday.
Then again if you are thinking of the “cheaper” iPad, you might be thinking of the 2018 “iPad” which is not “Air.” It is thicker, lower-spec and cheaper. Yesterday’s iPad announcement replaces this 2018 iPad with precisely ZERO improvements... other than a bigger screen.
And I guess we can look at it one way: same price gets you a bigger screen! So there’s that, but it used to be a given that new releases also included performance increases. But thats not the case this time ...18 months later.
For anyone who finds the whole thing as confusing as I do, Apple has done us a small favor and allowed us to compare iPad specs on their website here:
https://www.apple.com/ipad/compare/
Ah ok, thanks - I thought the new one was an Air. I guess the next step is for me to compare the 2019 Air with the 2019 iPad. The advantage of the Air at first glance is it offers a 64gb option, perfect fit for me.
