Apple Arcade
Any gamers in the house?
The new subscription service, Apple Arcade, which launched with iOS 13 is ASTONISHING. There are over 50 games on there so far, and it's a return to the ethos of the early days of iOS gaming. There's no Free To Play or microtransactions allowed (mechanics which have completely screwed how mobile games have been designed over the past few years), and it's completely refreshed mobile gaming for me.
There's a month's free trial. Take it up! And play 'What's The Golf?' as it's one of the best mobile games I've ever seen. The lineup is extensive and varied, with pretty much all genres represented, and the games are all new and exclusive. Quite how Apple managed to curate this with their previous non-interest in gaming is beyond me.
Also, you can now simply connect an Xbox or PlayStation controller to your iPad or iPhone over Bluetooth. FINALLY!

Sounds interesting.
If there is also some Apple TV content I might give it a shot
The premise is that all the games in the arcade can be played on iphone iPad and Apple TV and that you can switch between them. I’m waiting till it is available on iPad and tv before starting my free trial But £5 a month for family membership sounds pretty reasonable to me
I think the Apple TV update with Apple Arcade support is being released tomorrow (24/09/19).
EDIT. According to Apple.com:
I'm waiting for tv support before starting the trial. Hopefully enough of the games will work on my older Apple TV (The first gen that came with the horrible new controller) to make it worthwhile.
Is this iOS 13 only?
I’m glad I’m not the only one who hates the new Apple TV controller.
Yes. The Arcade tab only appears in the App Store on iOS 13.
Yeah, they removed the update tab for that. Hated that... updates are now menu diving
+1 wish it was possible to hide the 'Arcade' button and bring back the Updates...
(Just like it's possible to hide the Apple Music button that could get annoying if one doesn't subscribe to the service. I still prefer Spotify over Apple Music...).
Right. Thanks 4 info.
I’m not too keen on services like this—but at least Apple Arcade is focused on bringing new content, unlike “services” like Playond - who’re hijacking formerly pay-once iOS console type games, turning them into sub only.
I hope this subscription trend doesn’t severely diminish the number of quality games available for a one-time fee. I doubt I’d have been able to collect as many great titles if this had caught on 2-3 years ago.
I'll definitely use the free trial when I get in the mood to play a game or two. Overall, I don't really like the idea though, and it seems like games like Oceanhorn 2 and the new Impossible Game are only available through the arcade. Even if I paid out more, I'd rather just own those two outright than to have yet another subscription stacking up. I feel like I'm at monthly subscription breaking point (even though I'm still very much under what I was paying for cable... I just don't like the clutter of all the seperate charges on my statements)
They've done a great job with this, they've put the effort in and it shows. And that you can use it on the family subscription makes it a great deal. Hope the devs find it profitable and we see lots of interesting new games that don't need the IAP aspect to survive.
Would not call myself a gamer but I am definitely looking forward to it as I make a living in mobile games and this looks like a super sweet respectable platform.
Didn't realize Ocean Horn 2 was part of it, that alone might be worth it for me.
Oooh that sounds nice. The pay to play crap was getting to bad I just gave up on iOS gaming. The Final Fantasy crew was driving me nuts
I avoid iOS P2P like the plague .. you sometimes have to dig to find all the gems but they’re there, in abundance — Just a few of my favs:
Tropico, Civ6, Rollercoaster Tycoon 1-3, Xcom EW, Grid Autosport, Jade Empire, Rome Total War, Dead Cells, Hyperlight Drifter, Stardew Valley, Bastion, Transistor, FA-18 Hornet, Dust AET, Bully, Dandara, Binding of Isaac, Sunless Sea, Invisible Inc, Transport Tycoon, Project Highrise, Grimvalor, Banner Saga 1 + 2, Battle Chasers Nightwar, Steamworld Heist, Monster Hunter stories & Freedom Unite, Star Traders Frontiers...
Well rounded collection ya got there ... I still have a hard time avoiding the occasional sale, though my daughter and I will likely never finish the majority of what we already have.
Definitely no shortage of quality games on iOS.
I’m ashamed to admit it but mobile is my favorite gaming platform. Before I playing nonstop mmorpg’s on PC. I particularly like Idle, tap and gacha style games. Sure they all try to get you to spend thousands of dollars but the fun is seeing how far you can take them for free. My favorites all have a collection and social element to them. A few games I’ve played for years. Overtime you can collect tons of free stuff. It’s all pixals but I find it strangely satisfying.
The only one I really got into for a time was Kingdom Rush. Completed the original one which for me is pretty rare.
I don't get, it's as many button presses as it was before = 1. Open the App Store app, click on your picture at the upper right and there are your updates. Instead of clicking on the update button like before now you click on your account avatar. You can even pull the screen down to refresh like before too.
Why is that so hard?
I am more a Borderlands.......type
I got massively addicted to Elder Scrolls Blades the last few months. I had to step away before the wife sent me for professional help!
