Sales are great of course but we also need a healthy marketplace for developers. I am reminded of that thread a few weeks back about how we probably need to change our attitude a bit if we want developers to continue releasing products and supporting the iOS platform.

It's easier for you that have a US appstore account to say. To make an example of that extra Apple is charging non US accounts. I have a Swedish account and an app that's 11.99$ is approximately 116SEK, but Apple wants 149SEK for it. That's almost 4$ more for us to pay than for you that's having a US account.
Thats money I hardly think goes directly to the developers.

Also in Sweden, discounted AppStore gift cards is unheard of. There are gift cards for iTunes/AppStore but not once have I seen them offered anywhere that is valid in the Swedish appstore, where you can pay less than the value printed on the card.

Luckily we are all rich bastards. Or something.

Hah, yeah, I did the same, extracted $150 from my Distrokid account with the intention to use for upcoming sales. However, those end up on Paypal, and in Sweden there is no way to add money to my AppStore account via Paypal just yet, which would have been great to keep my app purchases under the radar from Mrs Hell. :)
That is apart from the fact I've blown quite a large chunk of it already purchasing multi-velocity drum samples where I indeed can use Paypal as the payment form. I still should have half of it left though. :)

  • All the Kai Aras stuff is still on sale for 50% off.
Has been for several days but haven’t seen it mentioned.

  • JimAudio 50% during Halloween 🦇
    Poison, Groove Rider.

No, it goes to your government in tax. I think Sweden has 25% VAT, no? 116+25% = 145. That's the bulk of the difference.

There are times when the exchange rate means that non US customers gain a little bit, other times we lose. Apple fix the rate to obviously not lose money though, and they do like to round a number up to finish with a 9.

In the US, prices get displayed without tax and sales tax is added on checkout depending on what state you're in (if I understand correctly) and different states have different rates (and some states have 0% sales tax), whereas in Europe prices to consumers must be shown with tax/VAT included.

European VAT is generally much higher than US sales tax.

Yup, I once disputed a large charge to Apple on my CC until I realized Apple combines and reports purchases on predetermined dates monthly and adds the state tax at that time so the large charge was actually a bunch of small charges added together plus tax. That’s how I realized my App addiction needed intervention. At one point $150+6% tax/month.💀

Those little charges sure don’t take long to stack up! The only way I’ve been able to tame the addiction somewhat is by spending more money at once; just no where near as often.

Having top class fare like Fabfilter and Eventide have made it a lot easier to avoid all the slightly lesser quality effects and mixing plugins. I just wish those were available when I started my iOS collection; could have avoided some redundancy and saved quite a bit of money.

That Will explain it. I suppose.
But still there is no way that we have any iTunes gift Cards on sale in Sweden thou.

Don’t developers have a say if they want to put their app on sale? I think this plays in to this more than we let on sometimes...

Of course developers have a say. I simply thought it was interesting that a mere week or two this thread as well as another one started around the same time on this forum related to how difficult it is for developers in this ecosystem this thread then pops up with people looking forward again to the sales. Don't get me wrong as I too appreciate the discount of course and have bought apps on sale but that thread made me realize that if we want even better apps with good support it's likely going to cost more than a buck or two given the size of this market.

not much we can do, some people say they will pay 50 euro for a single app but the reality is the market never lies.

I get what you mean by that but education changes attitudes and in that way change buying habits. As an example, once I read those threads I did the math and figured out that if I want these developers to support the apps that I had purchased and if I want even better apps to come to market then I need to help support a better market. I then bought a number of apps that I thought I could use at full price even though Black Friday is only about a month away. It's the same reason that I try to buy from my local music store. If I want the store to continue to exist I can't just buy online. So you are quite right that the market doesn't lie since it reflects what we are willing to pay and the price at which they are willing to sell. I just thought it made sense to move the "willing to pay" point a bit in the hope that it will actually be better for me in the long run.
