  • Interesting news. I've been eyeing Soft Drummer for jazz practice but perhaps Jazz Drummer will be even more stylistically suited?

FYI: Soft Drummer can be useful for jazz standards type of playing. You can direct the
MIDI out to another drum kit and get it to play a ride cymbal. But Jazz Drummer will
play rides on jazz styles without this MIDI out trick. Soft Drummer would be needed for
brushes. For practice along it's often better to have a more subdued drummer on the stand.

Yes, until Jazz Drummer was announced, I was thinking Soft Drummer would be great for jazz practice because it has a convincing sound and time feel. So now there looks to be two choices for the aspiring jazz student from the same dev.

I didn't realize Soft Drummer can't play a ride without a MIDI out trick. Thanks for pointing that out.

It can play rides, without Midi.
It has ride cymbals in the Sound choice screen, just nothing with ‘ride’ in the name in the preset kits.

I am just letting you know, lol.
Here are the 4 choices, I put them in all the slots so you can see them all.
I would think the new Jazz Drummer is still going to be better for Jazz, though.

I didn't notice that sample in the sound choice screen. I was always pointing
SoftDrummer at the Gladstone Module in Gadget when I wanted a more active Jazz
Drummer sound. So, Soft Drummer is very good for basic jazz styles. Jazz Drummer will
do better BeBop and Fusion Jazz styles. I own them all... my only complaint is the slight
latency in AUM. I like the drummer to be really in the pocket.

Sync is the biggest headache used mixes of AUv3, IAA and Standalone apps. @j_liljedahl and @Sevensystems have explained why the solution is NOT trivial to fix. Ableton Link comes close but didn't implement the ability for apps to communicate accurate clock timing and
Xequence is really a DAW (MIDI Only) interoperating with AUM (an Audio DAW). DAW and DAW sync'ing needs someone to the the Master of the clock. Anyway. SoftDrummer is great.
What carefully for a potential LUMBeats discount on Black Friday (like last year) and load up.

The new Jazz Drummer will probably not get a discount until 2020 if then.

Perhaps it's not ready, but you'd think sales wise dropping it just before would garner the most fresh buys...
