What sampler?

edited February 2014 in General App Discussion

I'm looking for an mpc style sampler that will allow me to record samples from my on board ipad music library, trim them and audio share to use in other apps such as effectrix etc. I have the impc which has this feature, recorded some loops but can't quite get them out of the app to use elsewhere. Ideas?

  • Hokusai allows you to import from your library and trim, but you'll still need to export that to an MPC app.

  • Dude, intua beatmaker all the way. But I also agree with funjunkie that hokusai is great for trimming.

  • ...or you could check out UVI's BeatHawk, which I must say, I'm looking forward to learning more about... :-). It's supposed to be released soon, too! :-)

  • Nanostudio.

  • @syrupcore was waiting for you to pop your head in with that suggestion ;) and I totally agree. +1 Nanostudio

  • Mid 40s, predictable...

  • Well, I've tried it with bm2 which has been my daw of choice for some time but unlike impc which gives you a specific function to rip from iPads iTunes library I can't see that option on bm2. When I hit record it takes me to sample from the mic page with no other options, confused. Clearly that would be the best option as I'm not keen spend any more money soon after I got effectrix. Still confused. @Simon I want to record chunks of audio from iTunes library on my ipad I.e. Loops from old records I have there. Guess the equivalent of plugging your hardware mpc into a record player and recording loops from songs for subsequent chopping etc. I'd really like to do this without going to a PC.

  • Hey Supadom, BM2 is audiobus compatible :-) therefore you have a ton of options. Using Djay ( DJ turntable app) as an AB input into BM2 works well for me. You'll need your loops, samples or full track in itunes and play them through the virtual decks in djay which can be "sampled" in bm2 just like a tradition sampler

Anytune Pro is great for extracting chunks out of files. Has a lot more precision than AudioShare itself.
    https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/anytune-slow-down-music-bpm/id415365180?mt=8

Can't remember who recommended it to me in another thread, but it's definitely worth a look. This is the free version link.

  • Btw, I don't know if anyone has realized that you can import YouTube videos into AudioShare. It strips the audio straight out of them.

  • Speaking of sample chopping, what is the best drum sampler for chopping up loops at the transients, like Recycle? BM2 auto chop just quantizes the chops to the measure, which doesn't always line up with a hit.

  • Samplr app

• Hey, cheers everyone. After plenty of fiddling and going crazy I ended up buying audioshare and it does what I wanted quite well. I wish developer would make trimming a bit more smooth but it's not bad at all, just could do with a full screen mode. I did it with bm2 too but it's just too convoluted. Djay is cool but I wouldn't use it for anything else so too pricey just for ripping same is also true with anytune and nanostudio. Got on with Hokusai alright but found it a bit limited with sharing options (maybe needed copy/paste IAP?). All in all sorted, thanks for plentiful response.

on bm2 its called ipod import. you gotta click the tiny computer icon. choplab is also great and you can adjust the markers. once you learn bm2, its pretty good for what youre trying to accomplish

i also love audioshare but if you need to zoom in, hokusai is good for that.

  • Yes, I worked that out. The workflow gets complex. Audioshare does what needed, simply.

I never knew about this. How does it work? Are you talking about its built-in web browser? I just tried that with a youtube video and as soon as you press play on the video, it automatically downloaded an empty flv file and saying "Not a supported audio file".

Currently I'm able to import youtube videos using the free version of AnyTune (which strips just the audio) with the export in-app purchase but if it can be done with just Audioshare, it would eliminate one more step in the process.

@shortbus I download the YT videos to PC and then use iTunes file share to drop them into AudioShare. I haven't tried the AudioShare web browser for this though. Not sure if that would work as I don't believe you could save them from there.

Downloaded the videos as mp4 360

  • Yes, you can strip and save the audio directly in the app. From the library, click the + symbol! choose download! and select YT. Once you choose a video, you see a prompt to download.

    @funjunkie

'+' in the library adds a folder. Can't see any other add symbol. I tried to put youtube link into audio share browser and I get 'error occurred during validation' message, the same when searching in YT. ??

  • @funjunkie27 thanks. I didnt realize you could do that.

  • That's one option @supadom. Hope the pic helps...

  • Cheers man for your patience but this is what I see @funjunkie

  • Sorry, I was thinking Anytune+. I'm not aware of Audioshare being able to strip audio from YT vids.

  • Cool, no worries. Just saw the audioshare recording in the top bar. Looked quite a bit different though

  • Audioshare definitely strips audio out though.

I am in front of a PC most of the time at office, so I usually download any videos there, Its just easier for me. I can then just transfer to AV Player or Audioshare (through file share). I prefer having all the files in one place for transport later when I'm away from the PC.

  • Feeling less and less spaced about effectrix but I've jammed loads with turnado again an it just blows my face every time. To the point of not being pissed off all that much as probably turnado is worth twice as much as I paid for it. I still crave some kind of loop on the fly solution but honestly apart from sampling fm radio into loopy there's nothing that quite boils my eggs. I'm just not kind of guy who has time to built an extensive loop library. I may invest in anytune thing when I feel rich but for now will stick with what I have. Don't know why effectricx didn't blow my mind. I've tried it in different ways: doing the random thing and carefully drawing lines on and off beat, long and short ones, messed with fx editing but it didn't quite cut it for me. Maybe because I'm not into breakbeat/drum and bass stuff? Will try it again when an update comes for now dust gathering I'm afraid.

  • Any other opinions on Effectrix? I haven't bought it yet but its at the top of my list. Kind of expensive, so hearing that its not that great makes me second guess it.

I love Turnado, and this looks like a tighter, more controllable Turnado.
