SOLVED (the hard way) - App store won't let me update any apps

  • Apple is supposed to call me later today about this and I’m going to see if I can find out what happened

  • edited November 2019

I had the same problem of no longer being able to update my apps since monday on my iPhone and two iPads. All running iOS 12.4.3 and the issue happened at the same time all across my devices. I have repeatedly rebooted devices and signed out my Apple ID and back in, and everything failed to fix the problem.

Updating started working last night again on all my devices. I am suspecting that this is a server side problem and not much related to the version of the iOS you are running or something related to your Apple ID. It appears they must have reset something on their end for it to work again for multiple users at once. I never called it in to Apple and don’t have a case number, but my problems were identical to what you all described here. I think your cases forced Apple engineers to reset something on the server side that also fixed it for me.

However though in the mean time i had found a working solution to be able to manually update my apps without losing any of my data, presets or settings:

    1. Go to System Settings > General > iPad Storage. In the list of apps find the app you want to update. Select OFFLOAD app. This will only remove the app from your device but will keep all of its data and settings untouched!
    2. Go to the App Store and download the app again. This will force the most recent version of the app to install. If you don’t download it directly from the app store but choose to reinstall it through the iPad Storage page that you used to offload the app, you will NOT get the latest version to download but the same (older) version you offloaded.

If you follow these steps you will see that the latest app version will work fine and all of your data is still there, also will the App Store no longer show that there is an update available for this app. 🤗 This solution is more useful than Apple’s advice to delete and reinstall the app because that way you will have to start from scratch and lose all of your data, songs, presets, settings for that app. NOT GOOD! 🥴

You will have to repeat these 2 steps for each app you wish to update. It is a little cumbersome if you have a lot of apps to update but it worked for me. I hope this helps for future problems, or for users that are still dealing with this issue.

  • Yes, updates started again late last night for me as well.

I guess engineering figured it out!

Yes, the issue, as you noted, is that it's cumbersome when you have a lot of apps (I had 96 updates pending when the updates started working again).

Also, the list of apps in iPad / iPhone Storage is sorted by app size, which makes finding any specific app a real PITA. (Suggestion: go to the App Store and see the file size and estimate how much user content you've added)

But it is a good technique in a pinch; it allowed me to play around with the Pattering 2 update (and, sadly, discover the Audiobus panel bug is still there, but that's for another thread....)

  • Yep - I too can confirm that things are working again. The illustration above seems fairly accurate, methinks!

  • Apple called earlier and Benjy said he would try to find out from Engineering what happened but he said they don’t usually divulge what goes on with the backend. He did say if it happens again people can refer to their previous case # (if you remember it) which might cut to the chase more quickly.

That actually did not work for me. It was one of the first things I tried. The app would offload, but then the same version would install.

I thought it had worked at first because the indicator of an update would go away, but when actually checking the version of the app vs. the current version on the app store, I would find that it was not up to date.

Anyway ... current issue resolved, and we all know how to get Apple to resolve it quicker next time.

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • I've been having a similar but I think unrelated problem. I have automatic app updates turned on. However periodically I will click on an app in the app store and it will say "Open" and then it changes to "Update". I had both AB3 and iBassist do this to me, yesterday and today. Neither one of them automatically updated, and in the case of AB3 it said the update was 3 days old.

Any thoughts on why my apps are not automatically updating and I have to a) find the update and b) update it manually?

It's "normal". I believe auto updates only check once a day or so, and Apple purposely phases updates to reduce the peak load on the servers. Imagine if all iPhones updated Facebook or Twitter at once! This is kinda inconvenient for niche apps like ours, but it is the way. And you do have to visit the AppStore page, as you describe, in order to immediately check for updates. This means that, if you're expecting an update, you need to use this procedure.
