New from Klevgrand: Hillman synth

Terrific video Doug, and excellent playing. But the sound of this thing reminds me of the keyboards you could get from, like, Woolworth's around the dawn of synthpop. We wanted to cover "Enola Gay," but we could only afford/find the synths in the mall, and everything sounded so cheesy to our ears. So, thank you for this video, it made me go and buy Tines finally!

  • Also curious about the comparison with the Alina app and the combo organ

  • Effects section is the star. Are we in for another 'palette' phase of niche synths from Klevgrand? I hope not, but this one is fun and worth the intro price.

  • I am going to skip this. Black Friday still hurts and there’s a new one coming from Audio Damage.

    Soon.

First thoughts are that although this sounds great, it does seem very simplistic and lacks some vital features.....which is pretty much what I thought about Tines when it came out, and I now use that a LOT with other FX added, so this will be added to the collection and immediately routed through stark :) along with a lesson about what actually is vital and what’s not :D

:D what a rollercoaster of a review. I felt the same way about Tines back then so I guess this plus Doug's video will push me over the edge.

An update to this...no iPhone version ? Damn, that lowers it's 'review score' a bit. :(

  • I think this is much more versatile than the alina app. If ye olde string machine emulation is your thing then that one should do you. But hillman is more of an organ/string synth hybrid. It doesn't sound like a clone of any existing instrument to me, which is a big plus in my book. The control panel, while simple, captures something I like as well.. the allure of early consumer organs and string machines - in that it's hard to make timbres that sound bad, and the UI learning curve is a straight line. it's a two trick pony, but it does those tricks very well. Still, you do have a lot of control over the timbres with this and it's easier to get to them and shape things than with alina strings thing.

The only real fault I've found is that the attack is a bit too slow on the combo organ sounds. Even at zero, there is a little ramp that is not the attack of a combo organ, but more akin to those early string synths, with even their shortest attack still being a bit squishy. I'd love the option for the organ timbres to have just that extra little bite to it. As subtle as it is, that slightly squishy attack gives it that cheese factor. And don't get me wrong, I love some cheese, but it would be nice to dial it back all the way when needed.

  • So instant Krautrock heaven. I'm in.

i know.. weird ain’t it.. after all Galileo2 is iphone compat and thats an infinitely more complex interface,
have Klevgr. got lazy ? the last couple of apps have not been universal whereas before everything was ( i think ). this Hillman ( my dad had a Hillman Imp,, what a shed !! :) interface seems perfect for phones .. was going to hit this but the phone thing has put me off ( not that i would use it that much on the phone )
    strange sales strategy..

i don't have either of the apps, but have owned the solina string ensemble, as well as some other triple chorus string machines.

the Alina is sample based, so it will sound like a Solina. the developer doesn't state if the samples came from the Eminent 310, the Eminent Solina string ensemble, or the Arp badged Solina string ensemble. it doesn't really matter i suppose, as long as it was sampled with the ensemble effect (triple chorus) engaged.

if the Hillman synth has a proper triple chorus, and a pulse waveform option, you will have the Solina string ensemble sound.

if Klevgrand is on the forum, perhaps they'll let us know a little about their ensemble implementation. is it a triple chorus? if it is a triple chorus, an option to buy just the triple chorus ensemble effect would be lovely.

    for forum members who like to experiment;

find a synth/sample that generates a pulse waveform. run it through a single chorus, a dual chorus, triple chorus, or more. any auv3 chorus will allow you to run multiple instances. try modulating the width of the pulse waveform while running it through your choruses.

for forum members that are talking about transistor organs, there is also combo organ model V. close enough to any farfisa, vox, or acetone that i've used. add a little waveshaping, saturation, distortion, overdrive, compression, etc.

this is not to take away from the Klevgrand Hillman, which may be superb. Tines is very good, especially with an envelope controlled filter (many hardware EP users had a mutron on all the time).

I have the Combo Organ app - basically a Vox Jaguar simulation. I really like it but it is very much a one-trick pony (but a very good trick at that!)
Big shame that Hillman isn’t universal.

Hey, we've got the whole set! Grew up with the family car being a Hillman Husky and then we graduated to a Hillman Hunter which ended up being my first car (Fireapple Red) until a pack of skinheads jumped up and down on its roof (a lot) while it was parked down by the river in Twickenham and that was the last Hillman for me. Until now :)

  • I find the Alina to have more of a "vibe" to it, for lack of a better word - thicker/warmer, I guess. But one could probably interchange the two in a mix and make a decision as to what fits better depending on what else is playing. I do wish that there was just a basic filter with Hillman (easily solved with a filter effect). The Hillman may be a bit more versatile. Same family - one is prettier, the other has a more interesting personality.

i agree, so nice to have apps on a tiny phone.

the combo organ app with a filter (i usually start with hp filter), then into your choice of waveshaping, becomes a multi-trick pony. the electronic details that separated most organ sounds were filtering, types of filters, inductor coils/coil winding, and inductor coils that sometimes distorted. hardware organs were/are frequently run through tube amps, so tube amp emulations are fun.

  • Klevgrand’s graphic design is so sexy. Almost always.

Yeah but that icon and the Hillman signature...yeesh it's straight from a steakhouse signage

For those how need another opinion on the difference between the Alina and the Hillman, briefly:

Alina is more on the nasal side and due to move timbres in the included voices thicker and depending on your choices of modulation etc heavier on “the cheese”.

Hillman is sparkly and every time I hear it I think of the movie Legend which has its own cheese.

    Alina — > cheddar
    Hillman —> swiss

  • It kind of has an early tangerine dream/Popul Voh/Ashra thing going. Or that early New Age sound. If that's a sound you like, or want, then it's definitely worth it. Otherwise probably not :)

But for dream ethereal pads you could do a lot worse.

I used to have a mate here, a Hells Angel, who told me he’d bought one to cut up and use the chassis for the base of a new trike he was building.

He asked me to give him a hand, and when I got there, instead of the cutting tools and torches, he handed me an axe.

I’d like to tie this up as a really smart story and say ‘actually we did a really good job’, but after a couple of bottles of vodka and 30 minutes axe hysteria the Imp was about as much use as a prime minister hiding in a fridge.

Really agree wth this - you have to be into that new agey glassy pads sound. I don’t mean this as a criticism as if you like that it’s great but I find it very bland and REALLY cheesy. The high end grates on me a lot on a lot of the sounds. Again it’s a matter of taste but I think it sounds like it looks, very klevgrand. There was a time I liked their style, when I first saw it, but it wears thin for me, and the minimalist scandi thing kind of translates to nothingness sonically for me. It just doesn’t have much flavour imo, probably with intent as seems to be their style. I don’t mean to be harsh and all this is just subjective, and to offer a different point of view to the majority - who disagree with me - for anyone interested.
