Air 3/2019 iPad - any good?
I'm going to finally retire my 5 year old Air 2 after xmas, hoping for a sale. Most likely looking at the new Air (3). Seems like a good compromise for a better spec (fair bit faster, more RAM, supports the Pencil, still has headphone socket) than what I have, and a fair bit cheaper than the Pro.
Just wondered what your experiences of it are if you have one - I read a couple of negative posts (sample rate issue - but I would have though that would affect the new Pro as well?), but on paper it looks like a good deal.
Anyway - interested in your experiences and feedback.
Cheers!

Thinking of doing the same so will be interested to see what people say.
Me too! C'mon Air 3 owners, let's hear your experiences...
I started a similar thread a month or so ago, asking for comparisons between the base model and new Air, but didn’t hear from any Air owners.
Surely someone has one?
The Air 3 has been trouble-free for me. I changed from a 9.7 Pro not long after the Air 3 was released. It comfortably lets me jam in AUM using the Sugar Bytes synths with Egoist or BeatHawk for drums. Each audio channel has no more than 3 effects (probably Eventide, FAC or Audio Damage). I might put one or two FF plugs on the main channel when I’m making a special effort. I don’t really go beyond 5 audio channels controlled by between 3 to 5 midi channels. I find the sound of 3 or 4 of the SB synths to be enough, especially when combined with the effects mentioned above. I don’t use external midi controllers or external hardware instruments; it’s just me and the iPad.
If you do a search in the forum archives, there was a thread where someone did comparison CPU benchmarks (perhaps by comparing the number of Zeeon instances that could play a particular patch crackle-free) not long after the Air 3 was released.
that was me.. it was about 2019 MINI but apart from screen size, mini is exactly same as air 3 (cpu, memory)

I’m quite happy with my 2019 iPad. Cost me $250 US on Black Friday. 32 GB but I can deal with that because I don’t have to use a lot of onboard storage. FWIW
I love mine, works flawlessly with all my audio apps.
Regarding what Ive read in almost all reviews about mini 5 and air 3 being the same except the screen size, its not exactly true. There is an in depth comparison of the two with components listed, on the link bellow.
Its why I chose air 3 instead of the mini and I dont regret it, the big screen is very nice to look at, tap pads, play keyboards on, battery life is fantastic, and if you have big pockets, you can stick it in and take your fun time anywhere.

I wouldnt buy the regular ipad 2019 though, Im sure its a fine piece of hardware but its not as nice to look at, true tone on air 3, mini and the pros really makes your ipad use less weary on the eyes.
The only real advantage, and it’s significant, I guess, of the Air3 over the iPad7 is the A12 chip. Both have 3gb RAM. Air has trutone and starts with 64 gb as opposed to 32. On sale in US for $399. Don’t know if UK has same.
Thanks all, sounds like the Air 3 is a decent compromise. Aside from the sample rate issue (I’d have to keep earbuds plugged in, but I do that when music making anyway), and I’ll be making the most of the decent screen and size as it’ll be for art stuff too.
Had the air 2, awesome, now have the air 3, its fantastic. I hope apple keeps the ‘air’ line going.
I run au’s via aum usually just 2-4 channel jams. Synths, audio/midi effects, live percussion. I dont use cubasis and one of the reasons is crackles/pops with simple setups.
It also has the 3.5 output if needed and lightning connection, no need to switch all cables/adapter/chargers to usb c.....yet.
I got an Air 3 awhile back and have loved it. The 256GB coming from my 64GB Air 2 is where it's at. No more worrying about how many apps, samples, etc I have on board.
Yes the speakers are like the Air 2, only on one side, but for iOS music production (the primary thing I do on the Air 3), it doesn't really make a huge difference since I'm monitoring through headphones and/or monitors.
With a nice interface and good monitoring, Auria Pro and Cubasis plus the Fab Filter Plugin Suite, my iOS set up is just as capable for my purposes as a laptop set up...
Worth a consideration before buying in the pro line; if the more graphical/Pencil apps and the 4 speakers aren't deal breakers, the Air 3 is excellent. I'd choose it over the entry level iPad because of its 3GB if RAM and better chipset.
Be cool....
Thanks - sounds good, not a Cubasis either, and AUM user too.
Is there much of a difference between the graphical capabilities of this and the Pro's? I'm hoping to do more graphic work on the Air 3 - since the Air 2 I have doesn't support the pencil, so a step up in that sense - but if there's a big difference between the Air 3 and the Pro's graphics wise, maybe I should dig deeper.
Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks for the confirmation - Procreate is going to be the graphic app I’ll use most, so looking forward to using the Pencil with that.
Thanks all who responded.
Gonna trade in my iPad 2018 128 for an Air 3 64 while it's still worth something.
@MonzoPro Jist regarding pencil - in case it was not mentioned - beware, for Air3 you need Pencil V1, V2 works just with 2018 PRO models !

I think that i will do the same thing as you
Thanks, yeah - funnily enough just this second reading up about them!
@MonzoPro remember the specs of the Air 3 are about equal to earlier versions of the Pro line. So if a Pro two to three years ago was hyped as a audio/video powerhouse then the Air 3 is gonna be quite powerful graphically.
Again the real consideration is that the new Pencil version doesn't work on Air 3 (for now). Later in 2020 and beyond there may be iPadOS updates that allow the V2 to be used on the Air 3.
Good luck with everything brother...
Thank you!
Hoping for a bit of a sale after Xmas, as they tend to bring out new models in March.
Well that is why I qualified my opinion with "about equal", lol. Now @MonzoPro is interested in graphical capabilities of the newer iPads, frankly those scores are very good for audio and shouldn't get slept on...
My beloved Pro 12.9 1st gen is all but plug-in only at this point and I'm also wondering about where the market is these days. I'd like to ask a slightly different question: From an IOS music-making point of view, and WITHOUT CONCERN FOR COST, what do you think is the BEST iPad for music making at this point?
Johnny. If an ipad pro were better and it was 1k. You could get an Air 3 256gb and an Air 3 64gb for 1k. Or 2 64gb and an ssd. Not sure if an ssd would be annoying or if its just used for samples rather than recordings etc.
What's up with the Pro? You've had that less time than my Air 2 - has the battery gone?
I'd like a big Pro for art purposes, but the budget's never gonna stretch that far - so an update on what I have should keep me going for a few more years.
Yeah top of my list!
I love the Pro, my fave piece of technology ever purchased etc but the battery (with certain apps) lasts two or three minutes. Which is fine.....but irritating Spoilt rotten, that's my trouble, but the Kid's just got into college for next year and it's going to be an expensive run, so I'm just trying to figure what needs to be snuck under the serious wire etc
