In 2020, is 64GB all anyone should need?

edited December 2019 in Other

When I bought my iPad 2 back in 2011 I got the top one – an enormous 64GB. One time my wife’s 16GB iPad 2 literally couldn’t update to due to space without connecting to the Mac. Hence avoiding the lower option ever since.

But that was then.

In 2019, I caved in and subscribed to the top-tier family-sharing iCloud (which I very much recommend if you’re in a situation to share that big space among other members of family, it’s a good deal).

Also, in recent years, the Apple mobile user-exposed ‘file system’ paradigm has evolved considerably. More apps use it, more than before, in more useful ways.

What I’m wondering now is: is 64GB actually adequate now? Is 128, 256, 512 or more simply not as necessary in a ‘make or break’ sense, compared to a couple of years ago? I’m thinking both iPhone and iPad. I have a suspicion that I’d find a 64GB device exhibit fewer ‘no-go’ cases in what we do, in 2020 than in 2017.

  • I want 1TB

  • I hardly live with a mere 32 GB. Most of my apps uninstalled. I can’t afford a new iPad right now but soon or later it will become mandatory. I’m afraid more soon than later...

  • For me these days the bare minimum for being productive and using the iPad in many scenarios with different apps and tools is 256gb and I’m still having to clean it out regularly now. I’ll probably go for at least 512 next time.

  • Always worked for me on my Air 2, and I'll be going for the same when I upgrade to an Air 3, though I don't have apps with massive sample libraries.

I like having to keep the space organised and having my files backed up - if I had more space it'd be a mess, like this room I'm in.

  • Since I've started collaborating with other musicians and creating my own sample sets, my storage needs went up quickly. ATM I can work well with 128GB though.

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • I have 256gb. I never worry about storage space.

  • 256gb is the sweet spot between more than enough space and affordability for me. I use the current gen iPad mini with 256gb storage, and I've over 100gb left despite how large my sample library is.

I have 256 GB, too. I always worry about storage space.

  • I have 256GB on this iPad Pro 2017. There’s quite an amount of free space, but also, offloading finished projects to iCloud or to the Mac (then iCloud) isn’t a big problem. I also have 128GB on my iPhone XR (down from 256GB on my previous iPhone 8+) and that’s about half full.

I think the combination of top-tier iCloud and a far superior ‘Files’ app is changing my view.

    +1

"Enough" is relative to your needs. For sample heavy installations and workflows probably not. But for synth based workflow quite possibly.

But as iPads can't be upgraded, and if there's any uncertainty about your future requirements, go as big as you can but 256 is a pretty good balance. I have a 256GB iPad Pro and after 2.5 years it's never been more than a third full.

  • i have 64GB iPad and there is still around 30 GB free ... no chance i can fill it with something :))

  • My SU700 wants me to upgrade to 64MB.

    I say no.

Well, that’s always been the perceived wisdom. I’m now starting to question that. Go back about three years to 2016/17 and of course, everyone should go as big as funds allow. Obvious. But next year in 2020, I wonder if that still holds true?

I mean. Sample-heavy workflows (mine isn’t, I don’t sample) are about the same as photo-heavy workflows. My photo library on the Mac in Photos is huge. It goes back to about 1979. It fits on an external thunderbolt drive, and is in my iCloud (one of the compulsions to get the big 2TB iCloud storage). Since then, do I need any photo storage on a phone itself? Less and less need live on the phone. Not all of that library could have ever fit on the phone to begin with. Why not offload all of it? Probably the same with samples. Offload the whole collection, only pull in the actual ones you’re using for the job you’re on.

Also, and I know this might prod and hurt a few people, but there is such a thing as actually finishing a project, and once it is finished, it can be archived and gotten out of the way.

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • I think the smaller storage space iPads are becoming both more and less usable at the same time. Completely depends on the user.

External storage and cheap cloud storage obviously makes it easier now than a few years ago to get by with less storage.

If you use any sample heavy apps, no way. I think Pure Synth Platinum is some 8gb by itself. And even if you don’t use those type of apps often, there could be that one new one right around the corner that’s your exception... And god forbid you want to download a couple of Netflix movies for a flight or games or anything unrelated to musicking.

If you are someone that takes a lot of joy or pride in running a “lean device” with just a small fleet of small sized apps, and doesn’t mind moving things on and off your device it would be fine. But for most of the app addicted the constant struggle wouldn't be worth saving a hundred bucks and proving a point 😉

I have 241 GB free out of 1TB ; No movies/videos, just Apps, Games and sound libraries.

1Tb is obviously a luxury though. I went with it mainly due to being stuck with extremely slow satellite internet in the rural boonies, so I wouldn’t have to wait a week to swap out large apps/games, and also to keep a pretty sizable sample library on hand.

I’d say 256 would be more than enough if you have fast internet. 64gb would seem to me like 16GB was years ago - too little, especially with how much space some apps w/ IAP can take. iSymphonic and Beathawk alone take up 10gb each.

Being able to use MicroSD cards or USB drives with iOS 13 certainly reduces the need for the expensive upper storage tiers if you’re into sample libraries or other weighty content.

Well, that’s always been the perceived wisdom. I’m now starting to question that.

I could probably have expressed it better... Big enough to not regret it later (due to future storage/CPU power etc requirements unforseen at the time of purchase) , but not necessarily the biggest you can afford, which might amount to unnecessary extra storage etc.

Although housekeeping is good practice on any device to keep it running smoothly, to be unable to have everything I need installed at once would be a great frustration - that's one scenario that a careful purchase decision is designed to avoid. Life is too short to be locked in a constant cycle of deciding which apps are the most deserving of storage space on a limited device.

So imagining what storage you might need within the device's lifetime and adding on another third might be a good starting point. Apps do normally state their installed size on their App Store page which can help to estimate this.

  • I would go larger, i have 128gb. The largest available on my model, i also keep my album collection on it. Couple of books, other apps for everyday life. And now have 20gb left.
You can only make that choice one time so i would at least get 128. Especially if you work with a large sample collection, i believe 64 would be on the edge of not enough.
I already had to make choices, no more pictures on my ipad. I don't work with cloud storage for the moment.

  • I have 64GB now with my iPad Pro 11, and probably 20-30% of that is still free. I'd still be happy With 32GB if that was an option to be honest. While I get why some people can fill up 256 if the iPad is their main device, to me that's like a alien concept :)

I'm an admitted data minimalist though, I don't same a lot of files that aren't getting used.

Good point. I have GB’s of samples. I’ll never use the hundreds of kick, snare and clap samples I have. Everything’s on Dropbox to be pulled down as needed with a couple of GB’s of “maybe will use soon” on my 32 GB machine which is a little over half full. There certainly is a hoarder mentality with samples, presets and (these days) apps. Now where are those 909 samples... 😆

  • I thought 128gb would be enough when I bought my 1st gen iPad Pro .. I filled it up in nothing flat. Always get more than you think you’ll need for music production .. those stems eat a lot of space.

  • Yea 128gb here and pretty filled. I do have a good 25gb of samples Loops and one shots on here though...

  • As much as you can afford. If you've beed living with 64 then 128 might work for you
but I would tradeoff some screen size for more storage as a general plan to get bang for the buck. Apple always seems to have a model targeted to budget sensitive student use that's not called Pro.

  • I have about 2 1/2 gigs left out of 128 gigs, my next IPad needs to be at least 500 gigs tbh.

    That is very interesting indeed.

Same. And it's an Air version 1 so I've had it for a while. I'd prolly feel differently if I was doing a bunch of multi-track recording projects on it or used large sample libraries.

  • I prefer the Old Apple, the company that surprised us with doubled minimum storage capacity for iOS devices every new generation. I guess that upgrade schedule was done away with when they started pushing iCloud subscriptions, so there’s no hope in going back.

But I think 128GB should be minimum on an iPad Pro for the average iOS music addict. Apps would be the main reason, since its just a pain to load/unload apps when you want them.

In my hypothetical scenario if I were to try to get by with 64GB, there would always be a time where for some reason I can’t get to iCloud, or can’t get it fast enough, and would wish I just had more local storage. At least thats what I tell myself to justify my current 512GB.

And then the reality is that I have 200GB of data categorized as Photos on the iPad so its a matter of my being lazy with what is most likely hours and hours of 4K timelapse videos of clouds and mountains recorded on my phone and backed up to the iPad 😬

  • Yeah, I am one those minimalist with 32gb. Just a handful of great apps and Cubasis. I didn’t want to invest a lot in my iPad 6 gen when I got it after seeing how my 2nd gen one had about two good years until it was obsolete.. this one is used solely as an instrument/DAW. If I decide to use the iPad more, will rather upgrade understanding what I need..
