In 2020, is 64GB all anyone should need?

  • From my experience, I say 64gb is good for the phone, as not may iPad apps are on the iPhone. 128GB is a good amount for the iPad, as it forces you to back up your contents after some time, without keeping all of your stuff on one device.

(Although I'm saying this because that's the only devices I have lol)

  • I have 32GB and have most of the music apps ( synths, daws, drum machines , Groovebox, etc) with perfect manageable with having 75 GB iCloud account for storing presets and samples. For this i never use the iPad for other purpose and all other default apps were removed. ( except photo). I’m planning My next purchase may be in 2021 iPad Pro 12.9 1TB.

  • I’m a little over 320GB on my 2nd gen pro 2 years later. Sure, I don’t manage the storage at all and 256GB is totally adequate and hassle free. My Air 2 on 64GB has to be careful. I put the new NeoSoul keys studio on it and that’s like 8GB just for that.

I just upgraded my phone from 16GB iPhone 6 to 64GB iPhone 8. I really just take pictures with my phone and can send them to my iPad/Mac/hard drive/etc. I also haven’t put any apps that weren’t on my 16GB phone so I’m running into no problems there and don’t expect to.

So, I guess the answer is it depends on what you do but if you record a lot of music and it’s audio files and not MIDI and you don’t like to constantly bounce the audio to a computer or somewhere else then get more than 64GB.

Also, I only use iCloud for contacts and notes, so yes the space saved with optimize storage for photos/iCloud Drive would definitely help but I stay with the free 5GB.

  • My 128Gb Air2 is not enough space

Feel like this sort of hints at the key bit. There are certain apps and use cases that just require a lot of storage.

If you primarily use AB + a few synth apps, AUM + few effects apps and/or NanoStudio2 + @brambos impossibly small apps, 32GB really has you covered.

If you want to capture and store lots of live jams or do lots of multitrack recording or use more than one high quality sample based apps (like NeoSoul Keys) the whole equation is pretty different.

  • The 64GB of my original iOS music production iPad the Air 2 was just not enough to contain all the apps I had and retain a buffer for Auria, Cubasis multitrack recording. Even though I rarely used them I liked having GarageBand, iMachine and other large file sized apps on board in case I was searching for a particular sound, etc.

My new Air 3 has 256GB and I don’t really see needing more than that, especially with cloud storage & app off loading. Even though those two variables can be applied to a 32 or 64 GB iPad, the headroom issue was still an issue for me. I want at least 10GB free for audio recording with Auria & Cubasis. 256 seems the best of the bunch because it future proofs the device for awhile.

i have 64GB iPad and constantly 32 GB free.
And probably at least 10 GB are games and movies :-D

That is advantage of making music genres which are not heavy sample-oriented :))))

  • If you aren’t into sampling it should be good. I almost run out of space on my 128 though sometimes when I get lazy with organizing samples and archiving stuff

  • Rule for memory on machines is get the very most you can afford and then double it.

  • I always get the the model with the most storage because sooner or later I'm bound to fill it up.

  • I’m definitely going down a step next time I get an iPhone, I didn’t need 256GB, I didn’t need 128GB, I’m confident 64GB is now adequate for me. Same with the iPad, to be honest, since I’m on family sharing top-tier storage in iCloud. I can get stuff out of iCloud and back it up wherever else when it’s not a current project.

I have the 2nd edition sandisk iXpand, 128 GB. It’s super useful to store photos and videos on, and completed projects. The downside is that MFi devices still require the use of their own app. But overall, this thing is a great addition for when I have to back up something quickly, or to share with someone not on iOS.

  • I’ve had my 6S for 4 years now and every day is a 16gig struggle - the number of times I’ve restored from backup just to squeeze out all that “other” or “system” gunk. Pour out a beer for me next time you’re happily looking at your 128g machine :(
