Using Ableton Live to get the effects in sync with the music
In most cases the MIDI source apps, e.g., MIDI keyboard and sequencer apps, will create virtual outputs, then the MIDI destination app, such as a forthcoming version of Glitch Clip(!), will provide a list of these sources that includes both external devices and virtual outputs, so that the user can select which sources to enable.
@jrmgx Thanks for sharing the roadmap. Great to see how the app will evolve.
Thanks for your roadmap! I'll buy to give you some support because I can see you are working hard on the app. Hope others do too. I'd be happy to beta test if you are looking for new testers.
Same here, happy to beta test.
You are misinformed about the MIDI and being able to route MIDI from the same device. TouchViZ is another VJay app which can both receive and send MIDI from other apps. This enables you to use the same MIDI stream and modify it if needed to control the VJay app. This is especially useful in apps like yours which do not process sound directly. Good luck in developing your app some more.
I think I've found a bug. I went into the clips manager, deleted a bunch of random things I'd found on Giphy, added some new ones, and now I've got no controls for selecting a clip or opening the clips manager again. The Expert Mode button has disappeared on the settings screen too, and probably some more that I've not found yet.
I've restarted the app, and even the iPad, and they're not coming back.
I'll give you more info by PM
That's good news then, I'll need a little bit of time to dive deeper in iOS MIDI but it will be worth the wait
Thanks for your help
One of the things that caught my eye about this app was the Giphy feature. I assume requires an internet connection in all cases? It appears from the documentation that the app doesn't store the GIFs locally?
Hello, it needs an internet connection to browse and retrieve the gif. But when you decide to import one it will be saved locally.
From that point you don’t need a connection anymore!
I’ll specify this in the doc
Ah, perfect. Thanks for the quick reply!
Here’s another quick example of the app in use. I should stress though, that I spent 2 minutes selecting gifs and about a minute assigning midi controls, again just to the clip selectors and the randomise function. If I ever manage to get Beatmaker to send a midi signal to it I could spend hours tweaking and setting the triggers, it’s a lot of fun.
Warning: flashing images again
Tis good!
@jrmgx I see the MIDI rewrite is out now in version 1.5. Seems to be working. This is very helpful. Thanks!
I did notice that the MIDI Binding labels can be ambiguous.
The note octave numbering seems to start at -2, so the label C3 corresponds to middle C (MIDI Note 60). This is a popular choice, but MIDI octave numbering is not standardized, so it might be helpful to document.
I also noticed some fun quirks, such as "Knob" denoting MIDI CC, and "C3s" denoting a sharp (#).
@jrmgx with version 1.5 of Glitch Clip it has a virtual MIDI in port so that if you have the Expert Mode IAP you can use apps to send MIDI to control Glitch Clip without needing external MIDI hardware or an IDAM?
@InfoCheck i just verified with Xequence. You can configure Xequence to send to Glitch Clip's virtual port. Or, if Xequence creates a virtual port, you can select it in Glitch Clip.
All the sources can be individually enabled/disabled in Glitch Clip
By the way, expert mode was integrated into the free version at v1.4.1
I’ve had this app since beta. It’s seriously dope & enjoyable to use, a bargain for what it cost me ($5). The MIDI control is really cool. Used it for glitching & VHS distortions in this video, which I imported after into LumaFusion:
Thank you for the information. I bought it and look forward to digging into it this next week.
I would definately check out EboSuite for Ableton Live if you want to have infinite control on audio and video in Ableton. Absolutely mindblowing. You even have a granular videosamlpler that just behaves like any other ableton instrument or effect.
Hello and thank you for your feedback, to be honest I looked over the internet for the right note naming and I found two options, I may have picked the wrong one
Can you tell me a little bit more about it, or a link to a good explaination so I can either correct it or document it
Hello, as @mojozart said, Glitch Clip creates a virtual port for the App that you can activate or deactivate PLUS it lists all the hardware/software midi entries and virtual entries that you can activate or deactivate too.
It should be quite powerful on that side
Let me know if it misses something
This is crazy good!! I love it (loved the movie too)
This is some good software! It seems very powerful and the integration with ableton makes sense.
With Glitch Clip you could do something similar except that the output would be on your ipad screen.
But, I may work on a mac version ... ;-)
Again, thank you everyone, it's a pleasure to get good feedback here.
If you want to help me even more, you can give me a 5 stars rating with a comment as it is used by Apple to sort the app result in search
Have a good week-end
I'm always available for more feedback
@jrmgx I'm just suggesting that you mention on the help page that C3 is your middle C (MIDI Note 60)
Will do!
Hello everyone,
I have some big news: Glitch Clip App is for sale!
Of course I thought about you,
this vibrant community giving feedbacks on the app let me think that someone could be interested.
But first of all, why?
Basically I am shifting my career path to focus on some artistic work instead of app development.
The Covid crisis let me sometime to think more in depth about were I want to see myself in a couple of year,
and after 10+ years in app dev I want to move to some other topic.
To be honest the transition had started while I was developing the app and I though it was a good compromise to get in the art sphere with an arty app.
So now, the deal:
you can find the detailed listing on: https://flippa.com/10526997-glitch-clip-vj-for-everyone
including financial reports
Glitch Clip is a good opportunity for you to enter in the Glitch / VJ niche
by continuing to build a good product and please user.
What is included in the sale?
What is required to keep the app operational?
Nothing special, it's a fully client App, it does not need any server or external expenses.
Why are you selling the app?
Mostly because I'm switching career, but also because now that the technical part is done, it became out of my competencies.
It now needs marketing and other care.
How does the app generate revenue?
Glitch Clip is a paying app, it targets hobbyist with a certain success.
It's a niche, but very dynamic, and the App has made a very good impression.
Are there any expenses for the app? If so, what are they?
No specific expense as is.
Note: if you want to update the code you will have to subscribe to some Unity plan to avoid getting their logo (which could be acceptable in the end)
Unity subscription is around $20 a month
What marketing initiatives have been used for the app?
Basically none, it's mostly organic growth!
I have an Instagram account with 300+ followers https://www.instagram.com/glitchclipapp/
It has a good engagement rate, with some user messaging me.
Also I've posted on a specialised forum where the app got some good feedback
How can the future owner improve the app?
The easy way is to publish an update every month with some new effect, the app is really modular on this point and it's quite easy.
Some more advanced features have been started like real-time videos stream handling as well as webcam stream, but it's not finished as it is technically more challenging.
An other easy way would be to make the app available on Android and PC/Mac. It should be quite easy as Unity the underlying platform is universal. And users are waiting for it badly.
Some well targeted marketing can come handy too, there is a good size niche.
@jrmgx
Aw man, bummer for me.
But great for you! Good luck in your future endeavors.
And thank you for not just abandoning Glitchclip.
I feel I have barely gotten to know it, and would have been really bummed if it disappeared already.
Now then, who is gonna save us?
I don't think it's a bad thing for the users like you,
I won't sell to someone that is just looking to make money!
Note to buyer, it has a good technical iOS MIDI library home made that could even be sell as a plugin for example
(it's made for Unity but it is also a standalone iOS MIDI lib)
This itself is worth a lot
Whoa, I would have loved to get onboard this. But I'm at my beginning stages of being an iOS developer and I still have a ton of things to learn. I know in a few years, I'll be kicking myself as to why I didn't pick this up. But I know little about programming on mobile devices.
Is there any word of advice you could recommend to a developer who's trying to get to complete his first iOS app?
To be honest this app would have been a little hard for a beginner.
Regarding starting a dev carrer, my advice is simple: go for it!
It's way more easy that it looks and they are plenty of ressources online.
Don't spend much on paying material, plenty of good stuff are accessible for free.
Good luck to you
Thanks for the response. Wising you great success in your future endeavours.
Anyone still using this and having trouble getting it to respond to midi?
