    Got it.

Set up 3 instances in AUM and chose 3 interesting presets.

Drove each with a unique Mozaic generator.

I hear a lot of good basses, interesting bells, buzzy synths... worth $8, IMHO.
Should be good for a lot of situations. The internal reverb is EOS 2 like and can be massive.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I used the forum's secret mastering trick. So, magic involved.

There are devs who try to listen to users feedback and take into account their requests, others who instead seem not to be interested in what their customers want. AD belongs to this second category, unfortunately.

People just need to put their money on the table... I regularly will send a dev paypal etc. of 4 or 5x of the app cost if they help me out, add features or ideas I suggest, etc... I figure if they listen to me and do work based on my brilliant ideas, the least I can do is buy them a round of beers or a decent dinner...

As for AD I’ll never buy another thing from them. Enso still fucked, Axon2 midi still fucked even after waiting a year for them to fix it, shitty menu and preset systems, etc.

There’s a reason that Chris seems to bring out the best in people... read his blog and twitter feed and you’ll see 1)what I mean and 2)how few shits he gives...

  • This is a must have app!

  • I might get this, despite having far too many synths already as I like to support developers. Three cheers for me!

Though as it’s Friday night, and Friday night is booze central, I’d probably buy it accidentally anyway.

Whoops - butterfingers! Sorry dear, I appear to have bought another one!

I'm going to let you know how you come across to me.

Harsh, self-important and unfair. There isn't anything close to Enso what what is can be made to do. It's really easy to break it but the reverse sample and speed controls are insanely great. Like any AUv3 you can load a lot of copies and create your own "bugs". It's like buying a power strip and plugging in 5 hairdryers and returning the hairdryers as defective or asking how to defeat the circuit breaker in the power strip.

"Why can't we run our IAA apps in AUv3s?" That's like plugging EU hairdryer into the USA toaster to avoid buying a new one.

Axon2 seems like a great alternative drum instrument to me. I haven't found the issues but
someone names @MonkeyDrummer would, I'm sure.

Comparing IOS apps to real hardware and PC products is just not fair.

If Chris Randall sees a lot of reviews like yours I can understand why we won't see him expose any skin here.

Anyway... this is a solid Synth and deserves credit for what does work well. It also deserves time to address bug and feature requests.

I would however love to know which IOS developers delight you. You strike me as very high maintenance for any small developer and quick to get out the flamethrower. Getting bugs fixed on a forum is good for interesting reading but deadly for most developers of highly complex apps.

I may also be harsh and self-important but I do try to be fair. Fair is just trying to see someone else's point of view. Always a good idea. But when you hound them into seclusion you can't get their input. Then you throw rocks at their windows. Think about it.

I looked for Chris Randall blogs and he seems to have scaled back to twitter and instagram.
@Virsyn and other small developers have also boarded up their windows to focus on getting paid for their investment in app development. That's our loss. But we do get maintenance for their catalog of interesting apps and the occasional new app.

I disagree muchly with your post @McD. Pointing out the opinion that a particular developer is unreliable is fair. I'm about the most forgiving person I can think of when it comes to apps and developers ... but I am de-motivated to buy anything further from AudioDamage as well, based on the relatively high incidence of crippling issues that never get addressed after a certain window after release.

Pointing that out (if done respectfully) is not attacking anyone, and it is not unfair. Being afraid to voice that because of people afraid to offend a developer is not helpful to anyone. Developers should be happy for the field research. Users should be happy for the balance of input to make up their own mind.

Chris is known for having a thin skin. That's fine. I appreciate it when people stand up for themselves. I like that about him a lot.

But c'mon, if you were to do an honest ranking of "reliable" developers, would AudioDamage be anywhere near the top? Regardless of how you answer that question, pointing out that one has reached the threshold of tolerance is nothing that should have to be defended.

Oh, thank the lord some rando on an ios forum told me how he really feels about me. My day is complete!

  • I think the biggest problem is not about dev’s ego but about figures. When a dev is publishing a new app, the first few days are crucial for the success (or not) of the app. Finding bugs on initial version of a 8$ iOS app doesn’t shock me as I know the most important (for most people) bugs will be (usually) solved in the next few days. When people are criticizing a bit to loud the dev in this initial phase, then it will reduce the number of apps sold, reduce the dev’s income and at the end, reduce the time he can afford spending on the app. It is a viscous circle. Again, everybody has the right to express his frustrations but there is better moment to do that than the d-day...

Yeah. Apps4iDevices is a genuine guy with some, er, issues. There were a few threads a while back. Since I’m not in any position to help I’d urge to just ignore.

That's really too bad. I kinda liked his approach to videos

Did you end up getting Shockwave? If so... and if you like the way you can modulate pretty much everything in it... I think you'll take to Continua as quickly as I did. It's fun and easy to get interesting sounds out of it. For the first hour of playing with it I didn't even try any of excellent presets. It's fairly intuitive.

  • I do think it’s good to call out issues so that other users can have a more informed opinion before they buy an app. But people can be a little blind when their problems are “edge cases,” and quite often they blame developers rather than seeking reasonable workarounds. Adding features and fixing bugs usually creates new bugs, so it makes sense that a developer (especially a small independent) would want to control the amount of time they spend catering to issues that only impact a small percentage of users.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a power-user, but I’ve been using multiple AD apps for a couple years now and have never had a single crippling issue. Sometimes you need to accept limitations (like only using one or two instances of Enso at a time), and it’s fair to call that out, but the most important question is whether the app’s capabilities vs. its price outweighs the limitations vs. alternative apps. For me, all of AD’s apps do.

Anyway, as someone who doesn’t need micro tuning support and is willing to deal with the finicky preset browser, Continua has captured my heart — the UI makes more sense to me than Factory or Alchemy, and the oscillators and filters sound really quite nice. The Skew and Warp controls provide a huge amount of diversity within the limitations of a virtual analogue synth. I also like the routing flexibility and effects quality, and I don’t find it much harder to dial in than the much-simpler Electribe Wave. I wouldn’t complain if they added the “double tap to reset knob” feature then moved modulation assignment to long-press, and a part of me hates envelopes that always start from zero, but the overall design is stunning and I’ve yet to encounter any major bugs using it in AUM (iPad Air 3, most recent OS).

If you’re on the fence about picking this one up, I would strongly argue that the issues pale in comparison to the strengths, especially at this price point.

  • I, too, don't understand the supposed dealbreaker issues. (I gather microtuning is a HUGE thing for those into it, but I don't pretend to understand those theoretical muso types. ;))

I will say that the AD apps are all unlike any others. The only one I don't really get is Axon, but I chalk that up to user error.

The contrast of your considered opinion and @MonkeyDrummer's language make my case.
You are being fair. He's settling a score and encouraging everyone to help in that crusade.

You don't resort to ad hominem attacks and see this product announcement to settle grudges for past history.

We do like civil discourse and I value your input.

I own 18 Audio Damage apps and only have concerns about Enso. But I accept that
audio in an AUv3 is really hard. I really just wanted a more efficient Audio Recorder and I got the 4 Pockets. Still, I have made some fascinating stuff with Enso using reverse looping and speed variations that nothing else provides in a Live context. It was and is unique in my catalog of AUv3 toys. Hot until it suddenly wasn't. Should Chris and his partner keep chasing
AUv3 stability or accept a box-office failure and try again?

I only know Chris Randall from the interview he gave to a PodCaster. I never expect any developer to have the cycles to engage with users one-to-one. When I exchange text with someone like @Brambos or Fred Anton Corvest I consider it to be an honor that they take the time to comment or PM me.

I'm sure Chris views some users like a Movie Star might view paparazzi.

I didn't suggest @MonkeyDrummer shouldn't comment... just tone it down on the character attacks. I tried to do it without making it an attack. Still, all criticism is personal.

I think respect for developers should be a site policy to encourage them to engage for our benefit and theirs. We learn so much when @j_liljedahl or @FredAntonCorvest exposes their technical expertise about the realities of IOS coding.

Then we all start bashing Apple... go figure. Can we sometimes bash each other in the interest of improving the conversation around facts and fairly stated views?

The number of examples where vendors and developers have been treated poorly are too high and I do realize this is probably one of the better forum for civil behavior but we should still self-police. It's not censorship. It's more of a social contract that keeps most of us here.
The worst offenders have voluntarily backed off or in deleted their account but there's still a tendency to pile on developers with a long history of products. Don't buy the app but why tell others not to give it a fair hearing.

I stayed away from @Virsyn apps for months based upon this type of criticism:

"I emailed the developer and didn't hear a thing and the bug never got fixed."

Then I tired one. Then another... then Black Friday came and I picked up more... the AudioLayer came out (praying for some extra features). Now Id have to defend @Virsyn as
a premier app shop but I get the pattern. ReSlice is unique but it brought out this type of hardware nerd that wants the features of their favorite $1000 sampler in an update for an app that might not have made Harry much money so... maintain but cut your losses. We all think he sell more with more features but that's his call. I respect that he moved on. In the
history I picked up the Mastering Secret without knowing it was pure magic. Go figure. I take forum opinions about all developers with a lot of concern for fairness as a result.

We are not all the same and new apps should be given a fair shot at reaching payback for the developer.

I'm the same. There are a few annoying bugs here and there in AD apps, mostly with the GUI for me, but they don't seem to be showstoppers in my workflow, after many 100s of hours of live use, crashes are extremely rare and I use them all the time.

Agree also about Continua ... the sound is so unique and rich that I can put up with the irritations.

Same here, find that one a bit of a struggle.

I did yes, really like the modulation and the sequencer. Need to spend a bit more time with it, but it’s a keeper.

Haven’t bought this one yet (got sidetracked by a documentary about punk on the telly), and a bit sozzled by the Friday night grapefest to properly appreciate a new app, but sure to pick this up over the weekend.

Shakin my head. This forum isn’t developer promotion central. This is a message board mostly of non-developers for talking about the apps that they have found, how they use them, and whether they think they are worth purchasing or not.
I get giddy on here when I see a well-balanced opinion that doesn’t just say ‘get it, it’s cool’ because it seems like people are almost afraid to be critical for some reason. As if expressing any negativity at all towards a product is not politically correct.

Obviously I really like this forum a lot overall, which is why I’ve been around for years, but there are some things like this mentality and then those with self-centered requests for active developers that I absolutely don’t like. Sometimes I complain about these things to draw attention to them in hopes that people will realize they’re being irrational, but I’ve given up on Audiobus fixing these forum bugs. It’s been over a year.

And I totally agree with the poster who said it’s the last 5-7% of little things that will determine if he/she ends up with the synth in permanent rotation. I like this one, but I can already tell it’s not gonna make the long-term cut because of that 5-7% that just doesn’t do it for me.

  • It sounds freaking really good to my ears. Super intuitive for me also.

Sure. But sometimes it's users be assholes. IMHO. Your comments are fair and avoid
character attacks when reviewing a new product. I often care little about the developer and do want a fair assessment of the product.

But I consistently see some developers get trashed for old baggage. Rarely is a product so broken that I'd ask for my money back if I can hear it and see someone poke the GUI a bit and Doug covers that base and some developers pre-release demo videos like Audio Damage did.

People write text they would never say to someone's face.

Based on your input I'll be able to position this one to those. To me this synth reminds me of Poisson-202 which I use a lot. What does it sound like to you? Bueller?

I too tend to buy them and use a small fraction. But they all get re-visited at sometime or when someone demo's them or someone pushes out free presets.

I re-visited Spectrum Synth today and it could use more presets from one of the gifted

  • @McD Thanks for doing the audio demo and comparing Continua to other synths, such reviews are the most helpful to me.
It's also good to know the flaws of the iOS version of the app that have been commented on so everyone can decide if one could possibly get over them and use the new boy anyway for its sound.

It’s fine to criticise anyone who merits it. There has been nothing abusive directed toward the dev just specific and accurate criticism, unlike the comments made toward those doing the criticising. Hypocritcial. Also... if you can’t take negative responses, the Internet/personal liberty isn’t for you. I’m sure there’s a tax funded support line available for middle class people who have been disagreed with somewhere though.

Funny how the people who talk the most about empathy and open mindedness while dropping all the social media buzzwords like diversity, progressiveness Etc display absolutely none of those qualities in their real world interactions with people who disagree with them on any matter, and only ever seem to invoke these things when talking about distant or large groups with which they have no actual contact and where the individual and thus real is diluted into the symbolic. Almost like it’s all about their self image rather than anything else... Whoops, slipped off topic, willingly.

  • Also this app sounds great. U_U Sale me, I’m disabled.

My primetime rotation is the Moogs, Zeeon, Spectrum, and mood. Yeah, there’s a lot of virtual analog in there. But it comes down to these synths sounding the best, and then that extra 5-7% —best user interfaces and best aesthetics (and yes, I consider Spectrum and Zeeon great-looking because they don’t get in my way and are just simple conduits with easy-on-the-eyes colors).

I feel like I’d get it terribly wrong to compare Continua to something else...it’s unique in that the oscillators sound not so aggressive...the sawtooth sounds more rounded, polite, and pg-rated compared to ripping a low saw note on the Moog, for example. And now that I think about it, Continua’s filters aren’t very aggressive either. Very little high resonance. These aren’t criticisms at all, just a comparison to what I feel is the norm. I’ll still spend more time with it yet before it truly falls in the “occasional use” bin.

Oh, and the drive section when used pre-filter is nice. Post-filter is a mess.

Edit: I thought about it for a couple minutes, and for some reason TF8 came to mind as the closest-sounding comparison to Continua. But I haven’t played with that one in years, so who knows.

P.P.S. I still feel squirmy typing Continua. It’s a terrible name and sounds like a yogurt or a menstrual cycle medicine.

  • Back to the app: someone (@dendy?) pointed out that the LFOs aren’t the fastest ones around.

As a workaround one can (ab) use one of the FEGs in cycle mode. These can go up to 1khz.
