  • Since this appears to be a meta thread, I.e. talking about talking about the app: I’ve been buying hardware synths since 1988. Every single one of them has had issues, often major ones including the very first (no resonant filters on the M1). Never stopped me from performing and otherwise enjoying them.

Not saying that the various criticisms aren’t justified but perhaps we could keep a sense of perspective, ja?

  • Good point. How many “worthless” app purchases does it take to add up to one piece of hardware?

(I get that no-one wants to have to re-map for every host though. I never really thought about that.)

I guess I’ve spent a grand or so on music apps. I doubt even half of those are in current use, so....a Soma, or a couple of Behringer’s worth. And bear in mind if I’d spent the money on hardware, I could sell it at a later date.

But apps are too cheap - right?

    @McD
That is totally different, and you are a totally different user/creator from me and some others.
"IOS continues to be challenging in competition with hardware." Some people like tactile... I like tactile. Not just touching glass. So I'd like to map to controllers.

"Are there any great $8 hardware synths?" No but again, I like hardware... even if it's augmented by hardware controllers mapped to apps. The live control is what I use.

"I like IOS to limit financial waste overall" Waste? If you don't like or can't afford hardware or don't know how to use a store's return policy... well I guess it's a 'waste' for you. Meh.

"I probably won't buy it (Drambo) out of protest!" The fvck are you protesting? Someone taking a little long to make an app on his spare time? Someone whose last synth is my go-to synth ever since I got it? Having an audience during the process of creating? What's the protest? Hope it works out.

I genuinely don't get your point but I hope you get mine. I'm wasn't ranting but I understand what the previous commenter expressed; a disappointment that the app doesn't have something that he/she and I need and we prob wouldn't go through the extra hoops to get our $9 back.

That's it, I'm moving on (who knows, prob they'll at least publish a list of cc parameters).

About 40 using average app price of $5 and reasonable entry hardware at $200.
And you can dole out the $5 using your allowance. Who can save for the big toys?
Of course, there are Pros and money is generated by investing in tools.

(I get that no-one wants to have to re-map for every host though. I never really thought about that.)

I don't get it. It's the story of proprietary music 50 hardware/software for the last 50 years.
Thankfully some defacto standards have solved the toughest inter-op issues. Consider the AudioBus, Ableton Link, wave files, Blueteeth and the Internet.

You would think someone would realize there's a market selling solutions to these
pro's... wait I think there was. IOS App pricing probably just killed it.

The last hope Obi-won are User written Scripts for corner case needs. You just need to describe the problem and hope a gifted scripter/coder has your hardware or writes code for you to test. Just don't be a dick about it. It won't cost much to be nice to the smart people that can solve these tricky problems as a one off.

At least. You’d be surprised how those cheap £6.99 purchases add up over a few years of app buying...

Say you spend £30 per month - a synth, couple of fx, maybe a sample pack.

    £30x12=£360

Now multiply that by the number of years you’ve been buying apps. Actually I reckon I’m over two grand...

Generally, yes. You just buy too many 😉

    $20/month for 3 years? Hmm... with a $500 iPad sunk cost = $1,220.
    I wish I only spent $20/month.

GAS is an illness. IOS is like Methadone for me. Expensive but effective.

I’m actually pretty tight compared to some! Haven’t bought this one yet.

Part of the reason for the colossal spendage, is that new versions of existing things keep turning up. I bet you’ve got a folder full of drum and reverb apps, for example, you never use, because better things keep being released. If TB Reverb had been around a few years ago, I could have saved a hundred quid on reverb apps I no longer use. ‘But they’re all slightly different Monzo’, you say. Yes, but given the choice I’d rather have the hundred quid and just TB Reverb.

Saying that I don’t begrudge the majority of it. Me and the Mrs have hardly been out over the last 11 years due to lack of babysitters, so a Friday night app with a bottle of red is probably cheaper in the long run. And then of course there’s the £7.25p I’ve made selling my music.

How are you assigning cc to controls, the macro knobs for example?

I’d check the manual. All of the manuals for their recent products usually state that since modern DAWs have internal MIDI learn systems, they leave MIDI learn up to the host.

    Yeah that's kinda lame IMO.
I try to avoid synths that do this, I wish iOS apps had more trial versions so I'd know whether to get this or not.
I rather map things once (in AU or Standalone) and it then just works as is anywhere, any how. Zeeon, Model 15/D, DRC all work like this. However Continua has to be done via the DAW.

Which makes this app totally worthless for me for me unfortunately. It's a real fucking shame I have to buy a synth to figure out what it can and can't do (real simple shit too, like, does it have global pitch bend settings ? Tiny tiny features that SHOULD be industry standard by now) instead of just having a decent description of the fucking thing in the app store. Now I bought ANOTHER app that can't do basic basic things I want out of a synth that will keep me using it for more than 1 week.

It does have a full manual online though

Thanks. We established that there's an online manual, I read it, but it doesn't change anything.

My comment was about “I have to buy a synth to figure out what it can and can't do”, which is simply not true in this case.

There will always be something better around the corner.

It’s a boring subject but I think the real issue with overspending on apps is not setting yourself a budget.

Anyway, I bought this lol... getting some nice sounds out of it. 😎

Yes, records x/y pads movement and plays back. You can automate Continua’s macro knobs too. Every knob and switch I’ve tried throughout the app can automate, super fun sweeping the delay times!

Awesome, thank you, thank you! :)

  • I get it. It's an 8$ synth. I'm not asking for perfect copies of old classic moog synths (which you can get for 15 to 30 bucks btw). What I would like however is for the most basic, elementary, fundamental necessities of midi functionality to be standard in every synth. Its not asking for much. Is it really so hard to set modulations with cc74 and cc11 in every preset? I mean for fucks sake Continua has it with the double click but it doesn't actually work. Or to make them global settings? I'm basically just asking for developers to write in complete sentences. The Synthscaper apps have their charm, but c'mon. I just want after touch built into every MPE synth. Its 2020. Not asking for much here.

anyone got any clue on why that is?

I’m not sure. For me, the problem I’m having with a simple sine LFO shape it seems like it is not continuous and there is a long, long pause in between repeats. Like I can see the LPF being taken down to zero...then it stops for a good 2 seconds or so, then ramps back up again. No other modulation going on. It’s got its quirks for sure.

I think you’re having issues with the whole modular idea. You can assign cc74, aftertouch, etc. to just about any parameter; no modulator in the entire synth is actually hard-routed so it wouldn’t make sense for them to have standardized just cc74 or aftertouch. And adding a global setting for this would have resulted in presets perhaps not behaving as the sound designer intended.

I agree it can be confusing when presets react so differently to control inputs, but that’s a necessary consequence of modularity, not poor design. If you’re using it standalone the best approach is probably to save a new Init patch with your preferred routings.

  • @sclurbs said:

No you are not. Not really.

But, respectfully, you're just doing a poor job of making a case to the developers
to add these extras. Like you say... $30 gets more feature coverage from a hardware
centric vendor. The $100 IK Multimedia Hammond B-3X is impressive for complete hardware emulation of a know device and it's speaker cabinet too. But $100? Seriously?

Who uses hardware to control IOS device and expects a complete feature mapping for an app with 80 parameters. Live, working musicians. They demand nothing less.

When did this 2020 thing happen... still recovering from the Holidays.

  • If I understand the real issue correctly, it’s not wanting to have all synths have standardized ccs. It’s not having the ability to make midi bindings that work the same across all hosts. This makes perfect sense, and if I used hardware controllers more, I would be annoyed with that too.

For apps that offer only AU parameter automation, you have to map in each host, and in some cases each project. That is a pain.

I agree that the ideal is for apps to offer midi learn that is persistent across all hosts. Don’t think I’d be as passionate about it as some are here, but I get it.

    but I get it.

Is it possible to script a solution like a driver?
or a series of point solutions?
in Mozaic or in Swift or C?

Getting every developer to code to standards and enforcing them is Apple's domain.
It's a meritocracy and customers speak with their iTune $'s,

  • I don’t believe there is a solution for this other than getting in touch with developers, leaving comments in App Store reviews, etc. ... preferably with a constructive outlook.

  • edited January 2020

For what it's worth my review on the app right now is 5 stars. I just have some things to say as a Linnstrument owner. It would be much easier to forgive if the developer didn't come out and literally say "Use your Linnstrument, Roli Seaboard, Haken Continuum, Madrona Labs Soundplane, or Sensel Morph (among others) to directly access per-note pressure, pitch bend, and modulation."

But I guess shame on me for assuming it would automatically be fully functional for the Linnstrument and other hardware controllers with that kind of statement without twiddling with midi keymaps in your DAW (which you can't do in AUM) that reset whenever the synth crashes

@McD I hear you saying I can midi keymap any parameter to the cc commands of my wishes. But it's not responsive when I program it. I double tap any parameter and press the + button and add the cc74 and after touch , but it's not responsive. Doesnt end up controlling the parameters. Please please, what am I doing wrong?

the lfo bug is still there. i was mistaken that it was fixed in the last patch.
it is good for some minutes running a preset then it gets garbled for some minutes then it goes bad again. i didnt even touch anything. just letting it play for 10 minutes.
and it seems the lfo is not the only bug. other parameters change randomly too after some minutes.
    so frustrating...

Damn. That's a lot of hardware to test and support at introduction.

But I guess shame on me for assuming it would automatically be fully functional for the Linnstrument and other hardware controllers with that kind of statement without twiddling with midi keymaps in your DAW (which you can't do in AUM) that reset whenever the synth crashes

Some of my favorite sounds on IOS come from the most frustrating Apps:
AudioLayer, iSymphonic, Colossus Piano with the $50 IAP that crashes in every DAW but sounds amazing i my headphones. Not unlike the Concert
Grand I sold to downsize in response and feeling. And I can actually play it at midnight. Just never record unless I run it on my iPhone and connect with an audio interface. $50+ and it's too big for my DAW's.

I digress... easy to slip into a rant. Human nature.

@McD I hear you saying I can midi keymap any parameter to the cc commands of my wishes. But it's not responsive when I program it. You're not working productively for the users of Linnstruments over the needs of the other Controller users. There are also a lot less of you than those Seaboard losers. Bunch of wankers. I want a Seaboard so bad I can taste it. "I almost got in in Swinden" (Monty Python Masons Skit).

Wooing a developer involves helping them sell more copies of the app.
You help them and they will make your needs a higher priority. Do you
think Jacob Haq gets consideration for his requests from Audio Damage?
How about Mr. Cool Beans... never saw an app he didn't like. I think he genuinely loves apps, so, he's no shill. He also loves developers because indirectly they help him pay his bills with these new apps.

There's a benefit in just being a decent chap. It's really works best when you don't need to fake it. But fake it 'til you make it.

Good luck finding great targets for your Linnstrument. Do you have a Top 5
    for the Linnstrument?

Try to prioritize your needs for the developer by asking for a small number of must have control points. Network with other Linnstrument owners to send a combined request.

Good luck. I envy you for the problems you have. I see people with more serious problems. It can break your heart. Chemo, divorce, mental health issues, bullying, sexual assault, male pattern baldness (sorry, feeling sorry for myself). DNA is like a curse.
