Z3TA+ Synth, Video Demo and Tour

Another amazing synth for the collection, they do seem to be creeping up in price, although compared to the VST this is a bargain, cool beans.

  • Great video D !...love the sounds and I am amazed how the folks are stretching the audio capabilities of this device....but I still get tired of the same old interface to the synths.
Here is an opportunity to reimagine how we play and create interfaces like ThumbJam or TC-11 and we still have fiddley knobs and sliders :-/
Would love to see some more pad sounds on this one and I really really hope the MIDI implementation is solid on this one so you can hope to control using TJ or Geo and it sync well with the usual culprits..

  • Another great one. I think you could do several videos on this synth alone given the massive sound. I was messing with the presets last night and found myself lost in all of the depth of possibilities. Thanks Doug, of course you did not have to sell me on it, I already knew it was going to be excellent. Another great video .

  • Great video Doug. Some sounds are unplayable on my ipad 2, but not that many. There are so many great sounds that are playable and editable that I hardly notice. Great synth.

  • I had a couple that would not go on my ipad mini at first but the increasing the buffer took care of that. The buffer rate goes way up on this one if I choose to.

  • Wow! This thing is great. Thanks for the video. Very cool.

  • The only thing about the high buffer is it becomes obsolete when x3ta is in AB or IAA.

  • Ahh, I see, so on a few patches I might need to record into my daw first. That is good to know because I have been using it stand alone so far. Still that is an easy enough work around for me and I only had a few stuttering patches on the lower rate.

  • I got the impression you just wanted to play the thing, which is a good sign. Some great sounds.

  • I got some stuttering on my iPad 4 and that was at 512 had to take it way up to stop it. I think it was one of the pads and I was playing a couple of chords, other than that its OK, have yet to try with AB though.

  • Hey Doug. I think it's cool you're doing all these video reviews, but I have few suggestions, if you don't mind.

    1. It's probably your camera, but your videos are never sharp. It would be great to see a direct capture of the iPads output, removing the need for a camera, in at least HD resolution. It would also solve the problem of white menus that are just washed out white. You can't see any text or graphics.

    2. A better plan, or preparation. Bringing out the best of the products you're reviewing. Like in this video, you're showing us the x/y-pad and the modulation wheel on a preset which doesn't make us of any of them. In general it's just a lot of poking around. You probably don't have time.

    3. Showcase the uniqueness of each app, if any.

You're a happy hobbyist doing the reviews in your spare time, with (probably) absolutely no intentions other than go on your own way, so don't take these these suggestion the wrong way or too seriously.

    .

  • I think Doug's videos add the element of realism. Rehearsed videos show you what they want you to see. Doug's videos show a real user exploring a app, and sometimes surprising himself. I may be wrong but it seems as though Doug's intent is to give us a preview of the app, and come back later for more in-depth video. I like it. I mentioned once before, that even his errors are teachers, because I'm positive I'll run into the same issues.

  • It's known as infectious enthusiasm.

Modern Soma. "By this time the soma had begun to work. Eyes shone, cheeks were flushed, the inner light of universal benevolence broke out on every face in happy, friendly smiles."

  • Well just to respond here to Brad, no worries, I'm not offended, its all good critique. I make them the way I do because this is what you are going to get when you buy the app, If I make super slick high production videos it unlikely they would be as popular as they are, and to be honest I really wouldn't have the time and it would bore the pants off me to have to do retake after retake, you've seen the amount of mistakes I make LOL. And the other thing is you really cant get a feel for an app in 2 or 3 minutes, not really, unless its a slick company product.

I would much rather make a 15 minute video and see what there is to see. I have never had anyone say to me "you lied man, that app cant do that."

As for the sharpness, I will be getting better equipment to deal with res issues, the camera I use at present is a full HD camera, but You Tube compress the upload. So gear to compensate for this costs more.

Screen capture is not an option for me, it requires a jailbroken iPad, and I don't want to do that, and I don't really like the videos that use screen capture, its a personal preference.

Honestly I try my best to highlight any unique features.
Thanks for watching them to everyone who does, and I hope that you all get something useful from them.

  • Always getting something useful. Thanks for sharing.

  • @thepinkelephant - sorry, not so good. CC message control very nice and fine grained, but clearly intended only for IAA use as in stand-alone mode it is OMNI only, promiscuous with ports (no selectivity), no external clock sync for the Arp, no MIDI out from the Arp, and its Virtual MIDI ports don't do anything. I really hope they fix this in short order, not like Cakewalk are MIDI neophytes or anything.

  • So if you are using z3ta via IAA the omniport midi listening is not a problem? You could have other synths running via audiobus on defined midi channels which don't trigger z3ta?

At the moment the omni is stopping me buying it.

  • I've been a Cakewalk user for a couple of decades now and though they update their DAWs quite regularly, the VSTs are sometimes forgotten. Fortunately Z3TA was upgraded to version 2 a couple or 3 years ago.

Since Cakewalk is opening up to iOS with their 2nd app, hopefully they will be more diligent in their updates. I hope their past track record on the PC is no indication for iOS users.

  • BTW, thanks Doug for the video. I hope you know how much we appreciate your willingness to share.

  • Ya, I never miss Dougs videos even if I know I amnot buying the app in advance and every once in a while he ends up changing my mind . Either way they are always neat to watch!

    Nice quote, well chosen.

    Doug,

Thank you for posting this review so soon after z3ta's release! This was tons more informative than Cakewalk's own promo video! "You can take to the stage!" - as the guy lightly presses two fingers on the keyboard, and about to shread his solo of chopsticks! Lol! Even their music was slightly irritating.
You started off with a great patch and had me interested to hear more...your vids are down to earth and very informative which is why we like your reviews so much! We're really lucky that you take the time to demo fhese apps and interact with us!

    Many thanks!

  • Agree with Morris and others that part of what makes Doug's video worth watching is the 'actual person, actually running into issues and bits of awesome' with a given app. Think of them as DIY/pleasant punk rock.

Though, I get the feedback. I've watched at times and thought 'just cut that bit out' but I spent 10 years editing video! I hope you don't @thesoundtestroom. They're obviously exactly what most iPad musicians are looking for.

If anything, a Sound Test Room upgrade would be two cameras (one zoomed on the screen, one wider) and a silly easy way to switch between them. Not capturing two streams (== quadruple the editing time) but live camera switching like Nick does for the Sonic State videos. But with a foot switch or something. Kickstarter? Certainly enough love in the community. Users love the videos and developers owe you! I won't even press play on one of your videos unless I'm already pretty interested.

Ok, longer than I meant, sorry. Time for more tequila.

Doug, you've sure got the right idea about how to make your videos. The informality, spontaneity and enthusiasm is what makes them special!
What is also great about them is how fast you can make them, often within hours after the release of a new product!

And last but not least, keep having fun yourself while doing them!

  • Thanks for all the positive feedback, I do love making the demos, I think it would become a chore if I was trying to make the perfect video, and I do have a genuine passion for the apps.

  • Bip next or sometime Doug?

  • I think your formula is a great fit Doug. The contrast on the white screens is the only shortcoming, but with a different camera, angle, or lighting, that might be overcome. Reflector is great for video capture, if you ever want to go that route, and doesn't require jail breaking. I think your model might be a good fit for other avenues too....cooking, car buying, day trading, how-to sex videos ;-) All kidding aside, your videos help make this forum!

  • Love your videos Doug!
Even enjoy your pronunciation. Work = Werk etc..

  • I think a few words from the great poet Mr. Billy Joel are appropriate here.

is this from Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World'? Long time since I read this novel.
