@adamkumpf
Thanks for your generosity.
There’s a high demand for a midi looper.
I wish I could advice to make it user friendly and tailored for my needs.
Latest release of Firo4 (v4.0.4) just landed in the App Store:
- improved bluetooth fidelity
- support back to iOS 11.0
- improved beat alignment
- a few low-level audio tweaks (as recommended in Audiobus integration doc)
- more UI updates
Also, now that Firo4 is feeling quite stable, anyone have thoughts on how to get it into more people's hands? Many of the older iOS music/app sites I used to check out a few years back are gone these days. Also, there's so much music theory baked into the app that ideally schools could take advantage of it too (especially while it's free, which I'm planning on sticking with until the end of March, then likely $19.99).
Let me know what you think and/if you run into any issues.
It is definitely looking better on my phone (X), but are there meant to only be 12 drum pads on mobile, as opposed to the iPad's 21? The spacing is odd, too, as the ones on the left are widest and become progressively narrower as you go right.
As for securing broader use, when I look to study music theory I go to YouTube. I might send promo codes to some of the more well known vloggers on there and see if you can get some free promotion.
@aaronpc Thanks! I'll definitely reach out to some folks on YouTube.
As for the drum sizing, if you tap on the drum kit selector (top left corner; and yes the UI is tiny on a phone!), you can then select from 4 configurations (2 acoustic kits, 2 electronic kits). By default, on the phone it starts you with the "Standard" acoustic kit (8 drum pads, sized for quick/common use), but you can switch over to the "Full" kit to play all 21 pads.
I'm curious, why is this app working with mic access only?
That's pretty standard for any IAA/Standalone app that uses audio. It may be something required by iOS to work with the audio system, I'm not sure.
@nuno_agogo Since the backend audio pipeline seems to be much more stable without reconfiguring units on-the-fly (such as adding in the mic handling after the audio engine is running), handling mic access on launch is best.
There are 3 features in Firo4 that leverage mic access:
Hope that makes it worth enabling the mic! If the audio pipeline behaved nicely with dynamic mic access, I'd be all for waiting until a user explicitly needed a mic feature to request it. But as it is, it seems better to request it up front, and then not make the user need to think about it as they jump between various functions in the app later.
I assume App Store user reviews would probably help in promoting the App ?

Perhaps there is some Academic institutions you could contact online but since this is so fragmented globally I’m not sure how to approach this sorry.
Thanks for the updates
Every single thing they said.
@adamkumpf
On first trying a few days ago I was mainly seduced by the midi looping function. Since then I’ve come to appreciate how great it is from a theory point of view (once the use of the chord symbols became apparent to me).
I’m not sure it’ll help you on a big scale, but i’m intending to take it into my daughter’s school on Monday to show the music teacher (at least that’s the teacher in charge of music, as they don’t consider it valuable enough to teach as a subject in its own right). I wanted to introduce them to Pure Acid, but as 9 year olds perhaps they’re not quite ready for that - Firo4 I think is a better fit.
Great App, thank you. Will let you know if it gets taken up and used.
Sure thing @iamspoon and @syrupcore. Glad you're enjoying it.
@steve99 Thanks for spreading the word. I really do hope Firo4 can be of use in music education. It's a much less structured approach to music since you can see so many options laid out before you and not be stuck in sheet-music-land. Let me know if you hear any feedback about anything that would make it better for teachers/students and I'll do what I can to incorporate it in future updates.
On a side note, if a decent number of schools do get interested in Firo4, I'll work to make sure there is a version that can stay free for them (something like a Firo4 Classroom Edition, that has all the important musical aspects, but maybe lacks the MIDI/AB/IAA 3rd-party audio routing that more advanced users expect).
ahh i see. always forget about the iOS obstacles. just was a little goatish about the mandatory activation
Quick update: Firo4 is now a paid app ($9.99) -- if you already downloaded it, you'll always have the latest version
If you didn't get a chance to try it out, there's now another version, Firo4 CE - Classroom Edition, that is free and always will be. As the name implies, it's really meant as a tool for students/educators (read: still no ads or in-app purchases to distract) and contains all of the instruments/capabilities of making music within the app as Firo4. It also supports back to iOS 9.3 since many schools don't have the latest hardware and/or shy away from updating iOS.
What Firo4 CE doesn't have is Audiobus, MIDI output, and IAA. This was a tough decision, but since a lot of teachers are looking for apps that work as a stand-alone tool, taking out external app/transport support hopefully (1) is good for teachers, (2) simplifies the interface for students, and (3) draws a clear line between Firo4 and Firo4 CE.
So if you're curious, grab the CE edition and give it a go.

Keep me posted if you run into anything or have thoughts along the way. Thanks again for all the feedback and encouragement over the last few months!
Bravo!
Thank you.
You are incredible.
Your app is a fine masterpiece.
Wow. You put a lot of thought into this update. Drawing a fine line between education and musicians is something I didn't even think of, and this is a perfect way. Plus the upgrade cost is low enough to be affordable, while also maintaining the value of IAA, Audiobus, and MIDI output.
Heres a weird question. Do you see this app as an AUV3? By that, I mean as a single instance of AUv3 Firo, as opposed to multiple simple instances?
@Samflash3 Great question! I'd love to incorporate AUv3 into Firo4 in the future (in any form). As it stands, that would likely end up being a pretty complete re-write of a significant portion of the code. On the bright side, as AUv3 continues to pick up momentum, some of the other low/mid-level libraries that Firo uses (such as AudioKit) appear to be looking at robust ways to integrate support. When that happens, I'll try to get it into Firo4 as well
@adamkumpf This seems a good solution. I had my 10 year old playing with Firo last week as the "music class" portion of the current home schooling. Good luck with it!
