I've opened up Spectrum by Thomas Burns
I have been playing with Auv3 effects alongside
Spacecraft and I really like the sound of them.
I also didn't realise how versatile the synth section is.
Is there a manual for this or is it similar enough to the
Mutable Instruments rack modules that we should read
those manuals instead?
Though I'm not new to synths, I am new to Euroracks.
Thank you in advance.
Comments
That’s how I got my head round it, mainly used the granular one, clouds I think the hardware version is called but it was definitely useful reading the manual...
@Krupa
The Granular effect is brilliant on it's own
far less combined with all the others.
I've got all three effects running in parallel at the
moment so that I can learn the sound of each one.
Okay, I'll have a look at their manuals and have a read.
Do you know which physical module corresponds to which Auv3?
I think modal is elements, resonator is rings, and spectrum might be plaits?
You can find the app manual at (https://burns.ca/spectrum.html "https://burns.ca/spectrum.html").
And the excellent Mutable Instruments manuals give a lot more detail, especially for the various modes in Spectrum.
There is a tiny wiki article (that currently just tells you which Spectrum module maps to which MI module). If someone would add to it that would be great:
https://wiki.audiob.us/spectrum_synthesizer_bundle
This is correct.
I've been playing around with the auv3's.
I'm going to see about making some
presets to share if anyone's interested.
The dev likes trees.
I'm cool with that.
Love these. Still my favorite of 2019
Definitely
The spectrum bundle is great and I’m so appreciative for it, but god damn is it hideous
Normally I'd agree, but the sound quality is spot on so I've no complaints. I'd've still paid top iOS dollar for it
Just search for Thomas Burns.....easy to find yourself
Harsh. Needlessly so.
@animalelder
Good to know.
@espiegel123
Yep, I agree that was a bit harsh but hey
I was the one who said a similar thing
about Thafknar so no judgement on my part.
Each to their own.
Does anyone know which is the best way to share Spectrum presets?
I was thinking that I could use AUM as
Spectrum doesn't have inbuilt preset storage.
LOL, what! The interface is so easy to use and not ugly by any means.
I like the UI too. It's straightforward. I mean, could it be more polished? Yes. But the sound is so good, I don't really care. Plus the price was right.
I think that there is a difference between simply sharing one's opinion and being mean about it.
The devs are part of our community. I think people should generally give some thought as to how they put things and think about ways of saying"I don't really care for how the app looks" -- particularly for a free app that sounds great and whose developer has been super responsive.
There really is no reason to be mean. It is possible to express that one doesn't like an app's look without being a jerk and to think "how would I feel if some random person used that tone?"
I suspect OP would not love me adopting the same harshness in my comments.
You guys need to lighten up, my comment was a compliment followed by a criticism. People on this forum really seem to think devs are the most thin skinned snowflakes that need to be constantly brown nosed or they’ll stop making toys for us. They’re people, as creators being open to criticism is required for improvement. I wasn’t a dick at all, as a graphic designer I think it’s within my right to say something could be improved visually. The dev is obviously not a graphic designer and could probably do with one. All I’m saying. Like I said I’m super appreciative of the app, but it isn’t even an original app, it’s mutable code no?
Wow. To repeat, there is a difference between being rude and a thoughtful criticism.
Given the number of words you just put in defense of my mild comment-- it seems like you didn't love being criticized even politely. Now, imagine if I had chosen words as harsh as you chose.
That was a creative way to say “no u”
I have Spectrum, and i'm lazy in reading manuals. I want to dive right into it. Although i opened it in AUM a few times, i can't really understand the workings. I should read the manual after all, haha.
Sometimes, music app's are straightforward, and sometimes i think: "What am i looking at?"
Fiddling knobs one at a time (consuming) can make things clearer.
Although i understand the basics of synthesis (i have a electronics background), but sometimes i'm lost in what is going on.
That is the same with Spectrum.
A pointer to myself: " READ THE MANUAL!" haha.
A reminder to myself: Keep exploring the things you don't understand and grasp the meaning behind it.
I was blown away by an article on CDM (Create Digital Music) . I like the Abstract content in it.
https://cdm.link/2020/02/alva-noto-unieqav/
I wonder if Spectrum has a use in this sort of musical content.
@espiegel123 @J_B
Peace.
We all have different ways of communicating our opinions.
I see it from both of your perspectives.
One persons poison is
another’s cure as they say.
Still this thread was actually
about the Spectrum bundle as is
rather than if it looked great or not.
The dev has made free a great bundle for a great cause and
in light of that I’ll support him
all the way.
@J_B as a graphics designer
maybe pass through a couple
suggestions to the dev in terms
of visuals.
I think there are many graphics
designers on here who would
have some great suggestions.
I’m an artist as well so I like things
to look good but that isn’t a necessity.
@espiegel123 kudos
I’ve been on here long enough to
see your support for the devs
as well as anyone else that
needs assistance, including myself.
This isn’t worth fighting for.
We all have better things to
including some great music
because the three of us agree
it is a great sounding app.
Now heading back into the lab
to learn 17 new songs by Friday
and creating presets for this bundle.
That looks like an interesting read, I’ll dig into it later, and for sure, reading the manual on these ones definitely helps - I actually made the whole musical soundtrack for this piece by spending a fair bit of time getting to know the granular one and then doing takes until I did one I thought would work...
Kinda makes me feel silly about all the other apps I’ve spent a small fortune on, but then again, I probably wouldn’t have got to that point without playing with everything else...
The DSP is mutable code, but it's also got a mod matrix, LFO page and assignable envelope. I don't know if braids/plaits/clouds/whatever has all that.
So it's not just a rip and dump. And honestly, even if it was, I'm not going to compile my own app of the Mutable code, so I'm super appreciative of what Tom's done
@Krupa
If I had realised what was in the
bundle I would’ve saved myself
quite a bit of money but
no complaints, I’m enjoying
the journey.
I’ll have look at your film a little later.
@Identor
They accept midi notes.
I thought they were simply
resonators for drones n stuff
so I was saving them for drums
which is why it took so long
to get to them.
I mean we all are. He gave it to us for free.
Yep. I totally agree.
Nice evolving soundscape. Cinematic. Makes me feel wandering in deep space. Blade Runner style. The video is an awesome piece of work.
@Identor thank you, lovely feedback, I’m pretty pleased with it, I would still keep changing things but glad I found the resolve to put it down and start getting it out there, though I might try at least one more audio mix before letting any screenings go ahead as I'm worried about destroying expensive equipment, I've also had a couple of people having trouble with the clarity of the voice...
Cheers 🙏
