No way in hell I would buy one of these keyboards, as Apple Smart keyboards have always started to become unreliable after about a year for me, both with 2nd and 3rd gen iPad pros...

What happens? I would be interested in such a keyboard when i might get a new iPad because i could use them as midi input since i often use it and the tactile feedback already helps. What was broken? Too wobbly?

My 2nd gen iPad, the keyboard just started working sporadically and later stopped working. Apple have already given me two replacements, but the latest is starting to get unreliable too. So it is actually a problem caused in some way by the iPad itself, it is a known issue with some gen 2 pros. But now my 3rd gen iPad Pro is also getting to be unreliable (it just sometimes doesn't respond) so it seems they still have problems with this.

So looking also at the terrible macbook keyboards it might be not their best work, lol.
I tried once a keyboard for iPad in the store (i guess it was the original from Apple) but it was really terrible wobbly. I do not expect it to be as stable as on a macbook but it just felt not great. I could say the same about the windows Surface devices. I hope this time it could be better.

Lets see how that chip handles audio

It has A12Z CPU not A13 (which is in latest iPhone models) ... they increased number of GFX chips (obviously AR performance is they primary goal)... based on fact it is same serie as A12 chip i guess performance for audio apps will be +/- same like 2018 PRO / 2019 MINI/Air models ...

Again Apple giving the not so PRO treatment to their PRO line.

    Seriously? That’s very disappointing

  • So are the iPhones faster than the iPads?
Or isn´t the 12X not already faster than the 13 in the phone?
But indeed strange that this time not a 13X is in the iPad. Not that these numbers says anything about performance but still strange. So that could mean the chances for another update in late 2020 with a 13X,Y,Z or 14 might be possible.
Could indeed be that the graphical things are the focus.
I hoped multi-core for audio would come. Ipads do not need faster single core but better support for multi-core in real-time audio.
But it also could be that 5nm only will bring more performance without fast battery drain and thermal throttle.

The new Magic Keyboard with the trackpad is $300 for 11", $350 for 12.9".

Logitech Debuts today Trackpad Keyboards for 10.2-Inch iPad and 10.5-Inch iPad Air @ $149 and their keyboard is probably a lot better :)

    https://www.macrumors.com/2020/03/18/logitech-trackpad-keyboards-ipad-and-ipad-air/

  • 350 for a keyboard? That is more than insane.

  • The keyboard kinda looks like a monitor stand though, might be why they want so much

  • Might get an old 12.9 now.

Lol, it almost looks now like a micro imac.
Maxed out with the keyboard also costs over 2k :open_mouth:

  • Generally I buy all compulsively but with no work and covid-19 I’ll pass this round😂

So my iPad upgrade I’ve had for like 2 months can’t use the new trackpad, outstanding move apple. Why not drop an Apple Pencil 3 that doesn’t infinitely drain the battery and make it so I can’t use that without upgrading too

If you have the 3rd gen pro you can use the new magic keyboard and trackpad support is coming to all iPads on iPadOS 13.4 on the 24th

    WTF daaaaaaaaaamn

  • I gotta say, that keyboard looks superb. The whole package is well out of my price range for now, but I like the looks of this.

  • I got a few ipads but only 1 of the OG 12.9 iPad Pro never had any problems guess its time to get another one

  • So, are we thinking this keyboard will work with Gen 1 - 2015 Ipad Pro 12.9?

And, do we know if there are RAM differences from version to version?

I got laid off and no longer have a company laptop, so moving over to Mac 100%, not sure if that's a good idea yet, but if I could do it with just a new ipad pro and have a true laptop like experience, it might be better.

  • The base 11" 128GB iPadPro might as well be one I'll take a closer look at.
Depends on if there will be good sales on the previous 11" 256GB's once the new ones start popping up...

I more and more falling for Logic Pro X again on the MacMini so focus gets a bit distracted :)

I must say that it is also my situation. And for this disappointment in the new Pro, which are a mere revamp of the old one, and no iPadOs news on the horizon, I must confess that maybe the time to pretend more in music production with a decent hardware and support, since the iPad is still "only" the best toy out there.

You can use a trackpad with it, not sure if you can use the new Magic Keyboard with other iPads or not though. From https://www.macrumors.com/2020/03/18/apple-releases-ios-13-4-golden-master/:

    • Magic Mouse, Magic Mouse 2, Magic Trackpad, Magic Trackpad 2, and third-party Bluetooth and USB mouse support

  • @Carnbot, well, you did me in! I curiously searched for the 12.9 and found a deal from B&H Photo for a 2017 512 gb WiFi-lte model for $825... I recently got a credit card that will reimburse me $200 if I spend a grand in 90 days. So final cost $625. Could not resist this as it is maybe 30 or 40% off, but it’s your fault!

Gonna be watching a lot of Netflix in days to come, so this baby will get a workout. And it has a hp jack. And, as my eyes are getting worse it will be easier to use. Actually, no blame Mr Bot, I am thanking you!

Enjoy your new iPad :) That’s a good deal... it’s the model I have. (Minus the cellular)
It’s great for audio production too, yeah the headphone jack is handy as well.

  • I find it a little unsettling that Apple just quietly adds the new iPad Pro to their website as if it’s not of much priority anymore.

  • @LinearLineman; To reach that $1,000 credit card expense, I suggest the iPad at $825 plus $175 in toilet paper. Then you're all set for the foreseeable future. :)

Probably has something to do with some other big thing going on.

  • Right on @Clam, Cept I already done that. Some prescription glaucoma drops should take care of it nicely.

  • Looks like the 2018 iPad Pro will work with the new Magic Leyboard with Trackpad. If that’s the case I’ll wait till May and grab it.
