Thank you. Not sure about an instructional video at this point. Could spend an hour just on the routing/ layering of stuff in Ableton Live. I love resonant physical modeling effect apps too.
In a nut shell in this song I’m playing a wave drum with a snare sound. It’s being fed into Reaktor Prism (a great resonator plug in)in Live. The pitch that that makes can then be changed by feeding it midi notes. Those come from my foot pedal which is also playing the bass notes and also supplying the notes to the synth/ lead instrument. The lead instrument is then being modulated by the incredible Touch’e controller.A Drumkat midi controller is used to trigger additional samples/ layers . If you go to my YouTube channel my earlier videos are shot from above and have no fx on them.
Thank you so much! I always prefer people wanting more! I definitely play longer when I play in front of a crowd or by myself- lots of improvisation. I never play it the same way twice. For the videos I look at it being more of a concise presentation.(I keep looking for those copy/ paste buttons but I can’t find them.Guess they’re not available when it’s a live/ non linear performance.🙂)

Very cool beans indeed. If I had just heard this track I would have had pretty much no idea of what the setup might have been, and definitely wouldn't have guessed it was performed live by one person. I'm sure the odd instructional video like this would bring more subscribers to your channel. There's nothing as endearing as someone skilled who is freely sharing their knowledge with others.

Does Vic Firth make those sticks with the soft rubber balls on the end like marimba mallets? or did you create those yourself?
Yep. 5B Chop-Out. I cut about 2” off because they feel a bit too long. After that they’re great. I buy a pair every time I go into Guitar Center! You can just buy the tips also if you already like the sticks you have.

Do you buy B5's and cut the ends off and also buy the rubber ball tips? or did I make the wrong assumptions. I like the idea of some stucco attack sticks for pad playing. I want the trigger without the sound but still get the drum surface bounce... it's a genius tweak on basic tools for a haptic response in your hands. You're focus on this style is very cool... artisanal.
The Korg WaveDrum is an amazing instrument by the way... it's a drum modeling synth too. So, hypnopad can also create some pretty standard sound drum creations with these tools but went into this ambient world to change the impact of sticks/mallets as MIDI controllers over the keys and buttons.
The multi-dimensional controller for CC's is also shows a great deal of effort to expand the drummer's vocabulary in new ways.
The way a stick bounces and creates subtle dynamics just can be created with other techniques. For the maker it's a real feeling of expression like a pianist develops with a keybed using touch. This is a very haptic feel in the physics of the materials involved.
A tympani vibrating would make a great oscillating source... cymbals too with very soft mallets to just stimulate the cymbal into resonance. I'll bet Drambo would be a great processing plant for those types of real world oscillations. I'll keep an eye out for some "vocal processing" projects that use the microphone and see if they can be adapted to test these ideas. For starters I'm sure there are cabal and tympani samples to play with using the flexi-sampler.

That is the second version of the Wave drum. I also have the original one from 1994 and at the time it cost four times the amount of the newer ones. I just came into some unexpected $ at the time- I normally couldn’t have afforded something like that.You can see it in my earlier overhead videos on my YouTube channel( just search hypnopad).These days
Impaktor and now Drambo along with a Roland pad and a cheap IRig audio interface do a good job of emulating it.
@McD Sorry I wasn’t being clear. I used to buy just the rubber ends to put on my own sticks. Then I saw the Vic Firth 5B Chop-Out model sticks in Guitar Center. I have quite a stash of them now. They are a bit too long for me so I trim them just a bit.
Finally had a chance to watch the informational video. Excellent! Thanks for scratching the itch there. You and I think so similarly in terms of using round robin to create melodies and variable textures. Love it!

I’m all over it! Trying to figure out if that could be an iPad /Quneo workflow or just sampling it’s output and using that as fodder for the big rig. Either or- looks interesting.
Side note- wanted a Wavestation since they came out. My iwavestation has been sampled to death!
Events that have a long morphing tail seem to be a huge part of your aesthetic. Your like a drummer that just ignores the metronome and uses these zen gestures but with a sense of a slow underlying clock. Of course, I'm putting you into a box based upon a handful of videos and you make have more
dimensions to be revealed over time.
The iWaveStation also has really an amazing IOS App as well. One of my favorites for single notes and chords that "unfold" in time. When I came out I was busy looking for the perfect piano and missed the
other world of sound storms using new techniques. I got the Kurzweil.

🙏🏻 That’s a very kind way of describing a layer of how I play.
In that context, I’m basically following the multiple intricate delays that I’ve designed. It’s kind of a rhythmic feedback loop. I’m following my own “tail”.If I’m not right in the “pocket” it can be a train wreck! I have to play less notes that I would normally play as a drummer but I have to play them very precisely for it to work. Don’t even get me started about how to remember where everything is on the Drumkat!

He's truly inspiring for inventing new musical hardware rigs. We can imitate his quest in software too which is a lot cheaper and less messy.
Although his Frankenstein instruments are way cool, for me it’s more about his approach to sound design that interests me. Putting rhythmic samples in convolution reverbs (rhythmic convolution) or running percussive sounds through vocoder type devices(color bots) .The drum being the modulator and the carrier being totally bizarre samples (not just your typical synth sounds).
Been meaning to add more of these ideas into my workflow lately.

What can’t the iPad do these days! Can you run live audio into it or is it just for samples?
You can put it in the fx slot of AUM or whatever and run live audio in, yes. It’s an AU now too @hypnopad
