Music Books Suggestions; what are your recommanding me?
I need books suggestions about music, books like "This Is Your Brain on Music" or Biography, etc.
I may order "PATCH & TWEAK" even if its almost 100 CAD$. I'm intriging with this book. Pedal Crush also look like a very good read but again, the book is very expensive with shipping and dollar conversion.
Thanks for any suggestion.

Might have been the best book I read last year. Really good on most of the levels that matter. And then there's the Johnny Rotten blowjob story. It's all in there.:

FWIW, Viv's book is also on the NYT's FIfty best memoirs of the past 50 years. It's in some excellent company.

Pro Tip: Barbarian Days is excellent.
So good for anyone that has ever surfed. A hero's journey for surfers. I also grew up in Hawaii but
was younger and just learned to love the ocean and it's allure.
Beyond the Bass Clef by Tony Levin
I’m currently halfway through On Some Faraway Beach, an Eno biog which is pretty good.
Probably my all time favourite is 45 by Bill Drummond.
The Music Lesson by Victor Wooten.
Mastering Audio by Bob Katz, pretty much a primer on all things digital audio, not just mastering.
I recommend The Rest is Noise by Alex Ross, a very entertaining and informative survey of 20th century avant-garde music. And Ocean of Sound by David Toop, a highly satisfactory analysis of ambient music.
Everything is Combustible by Richard Lloyd
Cheetah Chrome: A Dead Boy's Tale: From the Front Lines of Punk Rock by Cheetah Chrome
Allen Strange - Electronic Music Systems, Techniques and Controls.
Yeah, but that’s like US$ 7.53, right? Kidding, it’s nuts.
I, um, might have a pdf lying around in case anyone is interested 😗
PDFs are very easy to find..,
If you really want to read a physical copy of Strange’s book, try your local library or even inter-library loans, worked for me in California.
Seconded. Both of these are brilliant.
Thanks for the heads up on these two, yes, both look great

Ableton's "Making Music" ... great book with tons of strategies and tips regarding musical creativity
Currently, you can download it for free from the Ableton website: https://www.ableton.com/en/shop/#making-music
Kim Bjørn's books are pricey but phenomenal, and the fantastic Push Turn Move is on sale. Here's a good video of what's inside it:

Thanks! If it wasnt for my wallet, I would have bought all Kim Bjørn book's. They all look fantastic!
A few more:
Elvis Costello’s Unfaithful Music and Disappearing Ink is as good as any musician autobio I’ve ever read.
Mark Prendergast’s The Ambient Century is an excellent survey of the topic. Of particular interest to me were the opening chapters dealing with the genesis of the ambient idea in classical composers like Debussy and Satie.
I’ve read many books about The Beatles. In terms of a song-by-song analysis, I don’t believe that Ian MacDonald’s Revolution in the Head can be topped. He has something interesting to say about every song.

Of these books mentioned on ambient, by the way, (or others which have not been mentioned,) which is the best when it comes to talking about actual technique rather than history?
@Gavinski the two that I referred to, Ocean of Sound and The Ambient Century, are historical in nature and have very, little, if any, technical information in them.
OK thnx a lot, looks likely that articles rather than books remain the best resource for how-to when it comes to ambient
Awesome book, I loaned my copy to someone years ago and never got it back, nor do I remember who I loaned it to.
Daily adventures of mixerman
I don't know any bios but these are some books that I have found extremely helpful and enjoyable:
Curtis Roads - Composing electronic music. A new aesthetic. (The follow up to his "Computer music tutorial")
Douglas Kahn - Noise, Water, Meat. A history of sound in the arts.
R. Murray Schafer - The soundscape. (Acoustic ecology. Not technically about ambient music but still of interest.)
Marley, Wastell - Blocks of consciousness and the unbroken continuum. (Experimental/noise/improv/ambient)
Don't really know of any articles that go into this either TBH.
Here’s one way Brian Eno does it.
The French Fry Race w/ photos is still one of my favorite stories from the book.
That reminds me, I should take another look at one of the recipes in the book. I believe there was one for a curry dish.
