@lukesleepwalker, @JeffChasteen,
Thanks!
Is there a way to tell which iap you have purchased?
Loving the Auv3 IAP! Sort of like Scaler but instead of canned performances you get a different variation every time you generate a new motif. Really cool.
If I could suggest a feature it would be nice if some of the settings were mapped to midi controls so we could vary the creation as it’s playing. I’m guessing this is limited to transposition because of the way the app works.
@azul3D_Apps While I’ve bought the AUv3 IAP some time ago, I’ve only started to test it recently and I’ve got some questions for you:
I hope these remarks would be useful to you thank you!
Hi @magnusovi,
In standalone mode, if you have purchased the MIDI Out IAP, you will see a button on the top left labeled MIDI Out.
When you use the app as an AUv3 MIDI plug-in, only if you have purchased the AUv3 IAP will you be able to generate a motif. If not, a message will be displayed: "AUv3 inactive". If you have a new device or have deleted Piano Motifs and reinstalled it, you can always restore your purchases by pressing the Restore button in the More Settings screen. If you had purchased the IAPs there will be a message that says: "Purchased IAPs Restored".
BTW, the MIDI Out IAP will only work in standalone mode. As a plug-in, the AUv3 functionality replaces the MIDI Out functionality.
Thank you!
@rheslip, wonderful to hear you're loving the AUv3 IAP, it was definitely the next step in the evolution of this app. Hopefully it's integrating well in your workflow. Thanks for your feedback. Currently in Sync mode, the only thing that can be varied while playing is the octaves for the melody and the accompaniment. In non-Sync mode, you can also vary the BPM while you're playing the motif. The way Piano Motifs works, to generate a motif requires a lot of pre-processing using the settings before playing it, so it isn't possible to interactively change settings to modify the motif while it is playing.
Thanks for your feedback @jsmonzani.
The message is there as user feedback so the user knows that a motif is ready to be played by the host. If this message is annoying, this is something that could be removed. On pressing Next and then Generate, this is necessary due to the way the app is implemented.
With the way the app is implemented this isn't currently possible in Sync mode. As you probably already know, in non-Sync mode, you can continue generating motifs without the need to stop the host transport but you lose the ability to sync with the BPM and beat of the host. There might be something that can be done in the future, where a motif could be generated in Sync but without taking into account the beat where the host is at, but lining up to the beginning of the nearest bar after generation is done (which can take some time, depending on the length of the motif). I can't promise anything soon since this functionality will affect many different aspects of the code, but I will take a look.
When you play an arrangement in the Arrangement Screen, you are entering Audition Mode. Audition Mode is always a non-Sync mode and is just a mode in which you're previewing the motif you're arranging. It can be stopped by pressing the Next button on the bottom of the Audition screen.

Thanks a lot for your help and explanation,I appreciated them! I'll go for non sync mode then!
A new version of Piano Motifs (v4.10) is now available in the App Store. What’s new in this version:
• Completely revamped the algorithm that manages the generation of accompaniment arpeggios for extended chords (7th,add9).
• Third track can now be of a different type (chord sustain, chord sustain multibar, drone) for different sections of an arrangement.
• Removed "Motif Generated" display message (AUv3 MIDI Plug-In)
• Added Purchased label for IAPs that have already been purchased.
• Fixed incorrect display of beat/time for a Start Delay value that is greater than the number of bars of the motif (AUv3 MIDI Plug-In).
• Fixed issue where a motif started playing on the wrong bar if playing a motif after restoring a Host session in Sync Mode with a time signature different than 4/4 and using a Start Delay. (AUv3 MIDI Plug-In)
• Fixed issue where extra Note Off MIDI messages were being sent at the end of a motif or when the Host transport was stopped in Sync Mode (AUv3 MIDI Plug-In).
NOTE: There used to be a limitation for the third track in arrangements. Only the 3rd track type for the first section was used for the whole arrangement. Now it’s not the case but any saved arrangements from previous versions will still behave this way.
If you are enjoying Piano Motifs please consider leaving a review in the App Store.
Enjoy!
Another fantastic update Fernando!
Yes, the hits just keep coming! Thanks, Fernando!
A new version of Piano Motifs (v.4.12) is now available in the App Store. What’s new in this version:
• Added new Call/Response Accompaniment Style. In this Accompaniment Style, the even bar accompaniment notes (Response) will follow the odd bar melody notes (Call). When this option is selected a popup screen will be displayed where you can define what notes you want the accompaniment to have. The options are Any, Unchanged and Chord. When Unchanged is selected, the accompaniment notes will be the same as the melody notes, but one octave lower. When Chord is selected, the accompaniment notes will have the same rhythm and intervals as the melody notes but played in the chord of the bar and one octave lower. When Any is selected, the app will choose randomly between Unchanged and Chord for the motif.
• Added new accompaniments for randomly generated motifs.
Give the new Accompaniment Style a try.
Enjoy!
Don’t you ever sleep 😊💤🛏🥱
Why is the TIP jar hiding?
Tip instead of 'thanks'...
But, thank you...
Sounds interesting, must try. Thanks for adding variations to the algorithm!
@GeoTony, once in a while, to dream of new Piano Motif features 😂
@RajahP, thanks for your support!
@bleep, this accompaniment style can be effectively used when melody and accompaniment are going to different instruments, where one instrument leads with a motif and the other one repeats it.
Is there some way to retrieve all the settings for a motif?
Sometimes it creates something really cool that I’d like to tweek to generate new song sections. I can get the motif back by saving and loading it but I don’t see the settings the randomizer used. Same thing with load settings - seems to restore the settings I used as opposed to chord sequence and settings the app used to generate the motif.
Piano Motifs is such a fun app!
Indeed, I’m loving this new style; pan the call and response in the stereo field and it’s just lovely!
Hi @rheslip,
All the settings that you see are abstractions for a subset of the many internal random parameters used by the app. When a random motif is generated there might be a lot of information that can't be abstracted to conform to the settings you see in the app. One such thing is the chord progression, which is heavily tied to many random parameters used to generate an accompaniment. That said, you can always use the Lock function to lock either the melody or accompaniment of a newly generated motif. When you lock the accompaniment, for example, the next motif will use the same chord progression and accompaniment of the previous motif but with a different melody. There is a limitation, though, and it is that you can’t perform locks on saved motifs only on newly generated motifs. I have created a tutorial for the lock function, albeit on an old UI version of the app:
Hope this helps.
Thanks, that’s what it’s all about, having fun creating music!
👍😎
Thanks for the help - locking gets me closer to what I was looking for.
Bug report: if you load a motif, play it, lock and press next it crashes. Had to try it!
Thanks again for this wonderful app. Seems like a labor of love for you that we all benefit from!
I am very early in this track’s journey and there are lots of warts as a result (sorry about the levels) but I wanted Fernando to hear how great the call/response feature works in a composition. I use it here when the gamelans enter. Just a lovely add to an already lovely app—an embarrassment of riches. I will share the final product at some point… but for now this is a little thank you to Fernando.
Thank you for the update.
@lukesleepwalker That was great! The panned call + response gamelans are lovely..
an embarrassment of riches indeed..
@azul3D_Apps Thank you for these (what seem like endless) updates.. 🙏 I can’t believe how much Piano Motifs has grown..
@lukesleepwalker, thanks for sharing this cool piece! It’s always a treat to listen to what some magic hands can do with the new features.
Thanks for letting me know about the crash. It will be fixed in the next revision.
@Simon, @royor trying to make Piano Motifs a better app for all to enjoy. Thanks for your support!
@royor and @azul3D_Apps thx for listening and for kind words. I’ll be back with the final product later. Thanks again to @azul3D_Apps for this amazing app!
It's a wonderful listen and look forward to when it's finished 👏
