Yo dawg, I hear you like Documents by Readdle...

So I put Documents by Readdle with Documents by Readdle

so you can use Documents by Readdle with Documents by Readdle...

TL:DR - You can have 3 different instance of “Documents by Readdle”.

The potential is unreal. I can access my drive and computer in one instance, while using the browser on the other one, and using multiview for quick folder management or previewing PDF. If only iOS Shortcuts was optimized for multiview, then this would be a joy to use.

Edit: There’s a good chance that a ton of you are aware of this trick, but I just found this out and I’m psyched to be using my iPad for a lot more than before.

  • Yeah, it's really good, I agree. If only we could press a music file and it plays, so we can preview sounds. This is a really big 'miss' on iOS. But otherwise, yeah, Documents is great.

  • Is there anything documents does that File Browser does not?

EDIT: you can preview samples in Documents! Well happy.

Here's my use case for Documents

    1. Easily connect to my drives
    2. Preview audio tracks
    3. Open PDF in the same app
    4. Has an inbuilt browser. Which means I can access links without interrupting my workflow.
    5. Actually shows hidden files
    6. Is accessible in Files
    7. Has a direct SMB connection to my PC
    8. Supports wifi drive
    9. Is visually appealing (even more so than File Browser)

I used to use it a lot to get files in and out of Caustic. I started using iFiles for that because it has some features that Documents didn’t. I don’t know if that’s changed but I’m primarily using Zenbeats now and Files and Auditor are working fine for me so I haven’t been using Documents or iFiles any more.

The built in Files app on iPad OS lets me connect to my drives, preview audio tracks, view images, read pdfs (right in Files) and lets me log on to my Windows machine and do all of that stuff without even having to copy it to local storage, it is pretty bad ass now and keeps getting improvements so it has reached a point where I find very little need for Documents. Player Xtreme is still my go to for streaming off of my PC though, that is nice and smooth.

Can you please point me to some description how to set this up... I rarely use my pc but it sounds useful.

Interesting. They finally included PDFs. Last year I remember being super reliant on Acrobat (and I disliked their “pay to edit” model for PDFs). Glad Apple finally incorporated it to Files. I kinda wish that I could listen to audio in list view similar to Documents by Readdle.

On the plus side, I’m uninstalling Acrobat.

I’m not sure I have the whole equation for you but...

I just found the IP address on my PC, this site shows various OSes and how to find the IP... https://www.tp-link.com/ca/support/faq/838/

Then I just selected the following option in files and put in my Windows PC IP address, user name and password and boom, there it was.

(Now I don’t recall if years ago I set something up on windows to allow this sort of logging in for some other reason but maybe it just works by default....? Worked for me anyway.)

  • For me, the best feature in Documents is automatic two-way sync with a remote folder

  • it used to be a easy way to download samples , before ios let you via files

I need to get rid of my need to make a perfect video. Yo know what? I'll make a quick video because of you just to test that theory.

Yah I had a ton of problems with all that on my 2017 base ipad but on the (used) 10.5 Pro it has been clear sailing for a year plus now.

Thanks for that. I guess this must be an iOS 13 only feature being able to have multiple instances of the same app.?

FileBrowser does this too, and doesn’t time out (in the background) as fast as, for me at least. I synced a ~10GB folder is samples and FB did it all in one go, in the background.

    I do love Documents though.

  • I have an old Apple Time Capsule and I can connect to it from Documents and Filebrowser, but not from the Files app. Filebrowser let's me access the Time Capsule from the Files app through Network Folders, so that's one plus for Filebrowser over Documents for me.

  • at this point most of the browsers do all the same things. I still prefer documents over the rest because it feels the most familiar and closest to Finder on mac. It’s PDF and print functions are great..drag and drop both in and out of the app..the networking, access to icloud drive and cloud services, and a pretty sturdy internal browser makes it a beast.

iOS 13 resolved a lot of the things that iOS couldn’t do like documents, but still, apple hasn’t gotten the design down. Files is sufficient, but such a pain in the ass to work with.

  • In the Files browser, long hold on an audio file and chose Quick Look...u can then play the file to preview it.

  • edited August 2020

When browsing audio files with Documents I need to tap only once on a file to preview it. It does even play whole folders. Browsing and previewing samples with the files app is quite a pain compared to that. If documents would just allow to browse USB drives directly...

  • This app is starting to get very close to deletion and bloatware deluxe...
(I'll likely get rid of it sooner rather than later).

Now they're baking in VPN client and subscription bullshit in it as well, NOT cool...

I hear you. I get nervous when I see an update available.

Yah it is pretty close to gone for me too. If I ever figure out how to get a dedicated static IP set up on my desktop that does not boot out my internet connectIon then I will be good with using Files 100% and wont need Documents wifi drive option.

  • I just deleted Documents by Readle and will NOT be recommending it to anyone anymore.
Too bad Drambo relies on WebDAV at the moment and I've not found any free non-bloated WebDAV clients for iOS/iPadOS.

Try FileExplorer Pro. I got it a long time ago, to access Windows SMB shares. It's become my reference app for general storage: mp3s, soundfonts, Dixie carts, Drambo, stuff. And it connects to the WebDAV with ease. It interfaces with Files, both On My iPad, and as a server in the sidebar. So it's directly accessible to any app using the "Files" interface.

I'm not sure what your IP address problem is, but here's my solution: Use a fixed reservation in the router's DHCP server. The easiest way is to login to the router while the computer is connected, and just tell it to use that IP (whatever it is) always. This works even if the computer doesn't use DHCP, since it just tells the server not to give that IP to anyone else.
