@wim Thank you. So BS16 is not for me. I wonder if Soundfonts from Brad Howes or KQ Sampei can do that.

Soundfonts only supports sf2, not sfz. It also appears to use iCloud Drive:

Add a SoundFont (SF2) file that you have downloaded onto your iCloud Drive. Press the "+" button and then locate the file to add. You can always change the display name of the SoundFont by swiping right. And you can remove a SoundFont that you no longer want by swiping left on its name.

KQ Sampei supports SF2, SF3, and DLS, not SFZ. The App Store description doesn't say anything about whether it works with external storage or not. I don't own the app so can't check. Keep in mind though that while some apps can reach files on external storage, they may still import them to local storage.

In there any app that supports sfz? AudioLayer? I think maybe the Taqsim app?

    AudioLayer supports sfz.
It also supports streaming from disk, which can be hugely helpful when used as an AUv3.
I'm pretty sure it imports files to its own storage (iCloud or Local), so I'm not sure if it's any help for low storage systems trying to use external USB storage.

I’ve got tons of iCloud storage so that would be nice. Thanks though, I’ve been really into decent sampler and SF2 lately and there are some sfz only packs on Pianobook I’ve been eyeballing.

Keep in mind that iCloud storage is actually a hybrid between local and cloud storage and you have no control over what goes on your device with iCloud. No music app ever uses files stored only on the cloud. When needed they are downloaded to your device. They stay there until the operating system decides one day that you need some space and it removes them from local storage. Apps take care of downloading the file transparently if needed, but if you're someplace with no internet you're out of luck.

iCloud isn't much help for anyone with low available storage. Some number of files will still take up local storage, and you have no control over how much or which files.

iCloud is super useful for a lot of things, but solving storage problems for music app users is not one of them.

    Right, I’m aware. Thanks 👍🏻

Oh rereading my comment it’s probably not clear. I was trying to be facetious because my storage is now laughably low lol but I’m definitely gonna be downloading some as soon as I upgrade iPads.

You can remove iCloud downloads from local storage whenever you wish. long tap on the file, then hit “Remove Download”, Don’t “Delete” because this will delete it from the iCloud either.

Dont'cha wish they had a "Don't Remove Download" option too? I'd sure feel a lot better about iCloud if they had that on a file and folder level.

Yeah, I sympathize with you. It looks like everything is precisely designed to lead you to the last tier of your iCloud subscription. 😅

For sure it is 😎, but that isn't what I was getting at. iCloud storage would be the same either way.

My point is iCloud is only useful if you always have internet connection. For instance you want to make some music on a camping trip, or play a gig where there's no WiFi. Discovering that Apple decided you don't need all those pesky samples stored locally on your device (as well as in the cloud) any more isn't real fun.

Oh cool thanks I’ve never tried it. The only thing I hate about it (correct me if I’m wrong) is you’ll have to redownload from iCloud every time you want to use it correct? That kinda sucks when you want to load a sample into a sampler but it’s only in the cloud so has to redownloaded. First world problems I know.

That’s why you have to pay even more money to make your phone a hotspot 😂

The files app and iCloud definitely need some work no doubt about that.

Oh so you’re out beyond the reaches of data AND wifi lol definitely won’t work in your case.

I’ve actually never taken my iPad camping but that sounds like fun. Especially for conjuring up some spooky noises in the woods 👻

Well, I don't think anyone would like to need to set up a hot spot in the middle of a gig either. 😉

Buy the darn external SSD storage and enjoy nature. I envy you, it’s so beautiful there. 🤩

True! But admittedly, burying your nose in an iPad with earbuds in your ears isn't the ideal way to make to most of it either. 😂
Though swatting mosquitos while trying to play can lead to some nice glitchy beats.
