Anyone got a Roland JV 1080 or similar?
I’m thinking of buying one. Any impressions?
Comments
You can use Patch Base editor/librarian for iPad if you get one. Works well for my JV2080.
JV/XV are interesting romplers / synths, though a bit redundant if you have Omnisphere VST. Check out Legowelt's Crystal Cult 2080 for more quirky / unique usage of the 2080.
Have a JV-30 and SC-155. Both decent rompers.
All the Roland romplers are pretty good TBH and I’ve had a bunch of different ones over the years. If I was going to buy one now I’d go JD-990 or XV-5080 (both for different reasons).
BTW, lots of info on these units over at Gearslutz.
XV-5050 here. It offers quite a substantial sound set and even without any SRX expansion, plenty of synth and PCM samples on board to build a vast amount of new sounds that sound great by today's standards, if you're willing to spend some time.
But there's a good amount of third-party sounds available too.

If you're ready to spend more dough, be sure to check out the Yamaha Motif Rack XS and the Roland Integra too.
Check out the Korg X5DR
I have one and love it
I have the XV-5080, which is like the updated version of the 2080 (more wave memory, more polyphony). It also can accept the newer SRX expansion boards (which are 4 times the memory of the earlier SRJV boards). The expansion boards contain some of the best sounds. It is one piece of hardware that I have hung on to and still use sometimes. In fact, the current project I'm working on uses at least one track from the XV-5080.
Yes, the Integra-7 is even more advanced than the 5080, and includes all of the SRX expansion library, plus the newer "SuperNatural" sounds. I believe it is still a currently shipping product. Quite expensive, though.
The “supernatural” sounds are excellent.
You can also get a software version of the JV-1080, if you want to subscribe to the Roland Cloud. Personally, the notion of a software subscription model doesn't work for me, but it's an option:

Excellent advise. That is one of my alltime favorite albums. JV2080 sounds magical on it.
I think with the expansions I bought for 2080, I ended up spending similar prices to a used Integra. So, it might be worth getting if the OP wants more sounds.
Another option is D05 or used D50. Similar sound territory but not as expandable as XV/JV synths.
Yeah, I love that album, top 20 electronic albums for sure, if top 10.
This might be a good option to see if the sounds are interesting and worth it. Major downside is Roland Cloud version doesn't support sysex.
I have a xv3080 with srx-06 & 07 expansion boards. 06 contains both srjv80 orchestral boards plus the vocal board.
Srx-07 has the coveted srjv80-04 vintage synth board which contains some outstanding mellotron and vp-330 emulations. I use the xv editor to load all the old sr-jv80 sounds into my xv3080. It also has twice the polyphony and way better effects than the jv1080.
I own the mc707, it’s good ...it offers most of the sounds from older JV,SRX,SUperNatural...It’s roland enough for me
Why not go down Roland Cloud Vst route?.. Small subscription for all there Instruments.. Not unless you just want the hardware, just to have the hardware?.. As it’s old, things could break?.. I have them on Cloud vst.. They are very good.. What’s a shame, is that the most vst files are not that large (JV series, TB 303, TR series, Juno’’s, ect).. Don’t know why Roland cannot out on iOS?... Oh yeah!... Better income?... Roland could do the same way as KORG did with Gadget?... But this is typical Roland.. I still love them tho..
I have a 76 keys XP-80 for 22 years. It has the same synth engine as the jv-1080. I’m still in love with it. This is my master keyboard for the ipad, but I use its sounds as well. I have over 30 different synths on my iPad, but none of them could replace my xp80.
I also have the 60s & 70s Keyboards expansion board (SR-JV80-08) installed. It’s electric piano and hammond organ sounds are amazing.
+1
In a recent Zenbeats class I asked the Roland product specialist directly if vintage instruments/Roland Cloud would be available on iOS and was told “no official info on that but keep an eye on Roland offerings later this year”.
I have a Roland JV80 love it but arthuritus prevents me playing it. Bought because it had Midi but sold a Moog Prodigy to buy it, still wish I could have afforded to keep it.
It would only make sense for them to include the Zenology in Zenbeats, even a playback version with limited editing similar tp MC-101 (or the app without the 'Pro' extensions) would be fine. This would be an additional ~1GB download or they could always release Zeonology as an AUv3 (That would make me seriously consider making some room for a ZenBeats install on my iPad, for now I'd rather keep the apps I've already got installed).
Great!.. But if it’s through ZenBeats.. Then I’m buggered!... Roland ZenBeats is not in the Cypriot iTunes Store.. I’ve stopped nagging them now...
That's a bummer, I've not even bothered to create Loland account.
It's kinda weird if you've already got a Roland Cloud account but can't download the iOS software?!
So until Roland fixes this issue I consider the Loland and can't really take them seriously on iOS...
I've got a Roland AX-Synth which contains a bunch of waveforms from the preceding romplers. It can sound quite good when programmed nicely.
Any sound fonts out there with samples from SRX cards?
Totally agree with you... Stupid thing is i have all there other apps too.. (Sound Canvas,ect)... I even nagged the Dev here.. But got no reply.. Even from the forum.. So i assume its out of his control too?... Nevermind...
Not the end of the world and very fixable
Nice. It would be a good fit.
I have two Roland JV1010's. I have used them often for live backing tracks driven from a MIDI sequencer. The sounds are perfectly adequate for bass, drums, pads & keys, but by more modern standards, they lack realism and programmability and expressiveness.
