Amplitube with the ampeg packs and you’re all set for clean or dirty bass. I have it on ios and mac and it gets used a lot, especially when I’m not in a position to record a real amp.
Mammoth looks interesting, but not my cup of tea right now. Could be useful in the mix as a distorted channel though even when you’re into clean bass. And kudos to the developer for encouraging user input.
Thanks a lot JoyceRoadstudios for your recommendations. I was actually looking this days at the bass options that THU overloud offers and they look nice. I ll give the config you suggest a try. Thought the Membrini was a guitar pre. Thanks a lot really appreciate!
Thanks Mrufino 1 for the recomendations.I ll give Amplitube a try too!
The Nembrini amps are guitar amps that is true, but their PSA1000 is not a guitar amp. It’s a preamp that’s modeled after the Sansamp PSA-1, which is a famous jack-of-all-trades preamp used in studios for drums, bass, vocals, guitar, synths, etc... You can find lots of literature and reviews about how the original PSA-1 and the sim PSA1000 are especially great for bass. With PSA1000 you can get a great bass sound into your DAW without additional cab sim or power amp sim, but for guitar you still should use IR loader. The “loop vitalizer” preset on the PSA1000 is my #1 bass sound on iOS today, clear and really present but with a little hairy funky growl. Also Nembrini will be releasing an Ampeg bass amp sim soon...
I’ll send you a message with more recs, and will reiterate that Mammoth is also very useful specifically for industrial and metal.
I’m going to try that preset on bass, I have the psa on Mac. I’ve been using it for my bass distortion lately too, blended in with a clean DI (using my new acoustic 360 preamp pedal), amp (guild thunderbass), and low end (low passed with pultec boost and compression) tracks. It ties the bass to the melodic instruments really well when used subtly.
I do look forward to a nembrini ampeg, even though I really love amplitube- again, on both iOS and Mac.
Nice setup! I was just doing Fender Pbass into my interface (apogee jam plus) one night, and using only the PSA1000, came across that preset and went crazy inspired for two hours and recorded a bunch of bass lines. Believe me there are some presets there that definitely don’t work for bass, but “loop vitalizer” and a couple others sounded incredible, like a full clean but hairy saturation. I suppose it’s unorthodox to just use a pre and no cabinets or power sims, but recording direct in DAW it just makes sense and sounds awesome, specifically with bass you can get away with it.
Hard to go wrong with a p bass. I have to play short scale now so I usually
use a mustang p/j, but pretty much only have the p pickup on most of the time. And I’m very thankful to my friend who gave me the thunderbass, it records really well. Sometimes I have used a guitar amp to reamp the DI signal too and that can give a really cool sound.
Interesting! As a guitar player turned bassist I’m definitely a fan of short scale. I love the mustang p/j, was looking at the roadworn for a while but it’s just too expensive, and the gretsch g2220 in green seems appealing for a cheaper humbucker short scale. Ultimately I decided on the Pbass for a traditionally classic trouble free split coil. You mention that you’re only using the P pickup most of the time. Correct me if I’m wrong, but is that because in a p/j format it’s a split coil and single coil so there’s no way to cancel the hum of the bridge pickup? I had been looking at lots of p/j formats to purchase like the Jaguar bass, but from what I’ve been told unless you upgrade the J pickup to noiseless it will have the classic hum, whereas a jazz bass has two single coils that phase each one out when set exactly the same. It seems for recording most have to stick to the P pickup for this reason...
I put dimarzio pickups in it, so noise usually isn’t a problem on the J except in some really tough environments. But the P/J sound is not as full as the P alone, that’s kind of the deal with P/J. I’ve adjusted them to get as phase accurate as possible but the P alone just has this “grunt” that you can’t really get any other way. I use the J pickup with the P live (remember live gigs? Ha!) for disco songs and stuff where you want a little more of the “accuracy,” but I still prefer the P most of the time.
@mrufino1 totally agree, the P “growl” is unmistakable and so satisfying! I hope you like it with the loop vitalizer preset, gives it real stank! A few of the other presets work wonders too.
Noise and hum definitely doesn’t matter so much in a live situation, which is why I crave a p/j or a Jazz for variety, but for classic pristine recording you can’t go wrong playing a P with flatwounds or even roundwounds.
Amplitube also has a collection of Ampeg SVX bass amps. Five total in the collection.
Do a YouTube search for amplitube SVX, there are a number of reviews there and perhaps one of them will meet your needs.
