The Thafnkar dev seems to follow a UI paradigm not unlike the mathematical mechanism used in the reverb. Convolution is key 😁

Maybe the time is near for another name change. Themcce, THE Most Convolved Convolver Ever. Or something like that.

Honestly, I would like to simplify the import of IRs to the AUv3, but the limitations of the App Extensions and App Groups paradigms are hindering. Going via iCloud would be an option, but my fear is that this would make things even more confusing and convolved.

Just to mention it for completeness: miRack also contains an IR reverb and can be used as AUv3 FX. There are about 50 IRs to choose from.

I didn‘t yet manage to load own impulses Edit: and therefor its not a valid answer to the threads question for ‚IR Loaders‘. but aleyas shows how to do this in the posting below.

  • @_ki wow, thanks for bringing that up, I had no idea that was there. I was however able to successfully import a wav from audioshare. Import only worked for me when it was loaded as an AUv3. Import into standalone repeatedly crashed it.
Wish it allowed you to adjust the size/length of the IR.

  • I've been using Thafknar for a couple of months now and I really like it, especially with the links in the app to several libraries of IR files that can be downloaded and installed.

When I have an audio file in AudioShare for example and I use "Open in..." and select Thafknar, it will already ask me whether to import it as a plain audio file or as an impulse response. I choose impulse response, open AUM, load thafknar and there it is.

Seriously, how much easier can it get?
I wouldn't complain. And please take my previous post as a humorous remark, no criticism implied at all 😊

Noted for the next version: Allowing the same procedure for zip archives.

    You are welcome.

  • @aleyas Thanks for the screenshot on how to import IRs into Convolvzilla in miRack. I mostly use it as AUv3, so the crash in standalone-mode doesn‘t bother me (but maybe @mifki should have a look)

I find the current method of import very convenient for Thafknar, just that the Auv3 version IAP is unstable , every time I open a saved preset I have to reload

Noted. Will check and hopefully fix in next version.

  • Ok - so I've been playing with Thafknar as IAA. The interface is fairly convoluted and not intuitive at all. That being said, once I figured out how to import files (took me about 15-20 minutes and a number of tries), they load up just fine and it works great.

I think overall I would prefer a more polished app with a better interface, but that's just personal preference. Functionally, this is working great.

So here's the next question - any good sites for free IR downloads? There's the other thread here with the free pack (already downloaded that), but if you have other suggestions I'm all ears.

Be patient with Thafknar. It's worth it 🥂💃🕺🏻

Sounds like a Thafknar IR installation tutorial is definitely needed. There was one YouTube video on that. It had no audio and the guy loaded it so fast you can't keep up with it.

It's a small thing, but it's VERY unintuitive and although the creator has a presence on the forum, he has yet to produce a tutorial himself. When something takes a quarter of an hour or more to figure-out, it's screaming for a tutorial... 🤗

  • I think this whole thread would make an excellent video for you — with the tutorial being a small portion of it.

You haven't even tried what I've suggested, have you? 🙄

  • @rs2000 If you're referring to using "Open In", then that's exactly what I did. I opened a ZIP file in Thafknar and then opened the ZIP from inside the app. But even that took a fair amount of poking around to just figure out how to do it.

And yes - I'm working out a video, but I'm trying to actually EDUCATE myself first before just firing off some half-assed video as per usual. This one is less app-specific than just simply a Thafknar tutorial - it may end up being that if I settle on this app as my IR loader of choice, but there's a bigger purpose here.

And yes, I'm being deliberately vague as I can't reveal ALL my secrets ;)

I've listed the exact steps that work with the latest version of Thafknar.
No poking around necessary, except you prefer to find out for yourself.

  • Chill, @rs2000, CHILL man!

I for one haven't had a chance to pick-up my axe and try your suggestions, but I certainly will this weekend.

The problem is that there is a whole lot of mystery regarding IRs in general, and loading them in Thafknar is just one of them.

Although I'm pretty certain your method will work perfectly well, there is no certainty that other members of this forum (or the millions of other IR users not in our forum) will be able to easily discover this information. That is why I have suggested the tutorial.

As for @Daveypoo, I'm glad he is "trying to actually educate" himself before creating said video. 🙃

I love Doug Woods to death, but sometimes he just dives into an app and noodles about for a number of minutes before getting to the point as he learns himself how the app works, so I appreciate Mr. Poo's thoughtfulness.

Sorry if I upset you, @rs2000, I can appreciate your frustration when you solve a problem for someone and they blindly go on about their ignorant ways... 🤓

Have you checked out the manual?

  • I found the manual — rather convoluted... 🙃

Plus I'm a visual person — easier for me (and others, I would imagine) to learn that way.

  • @polaron_de : I'm glad you are here on the thread. As I assumed, it does show you truly care a great deal about your app!

I'm pretty certain that rs2000's instructions will work, and I totally understand your complications in making it easier to import the IRs. Things that seem simple to us users are often very difficult problems for developers.

Thank you for creating an app that allows us to explore this relatively new area of reverb and impulse responses, and may you have great success in future endeavors!

  • @SNystrom and others, thank you very much.

Hmm.. it doesn't crash for me. Where's the file you're loading located - local, iCloud?

  • I loaded up a short wav located in audioshare, imported via ‘files’. I got 3 crashes in a row when using standalone, and that was the only module in the project. No issues using AUv3 though, oddly.

Hmm, on my side i can load a 10sec wav IR stored in AudiShare into a Convolvzilla module running in standalone miRack without crash - i am using a iPad Pro 10.5 with IOS 13.2.3

Ok thanks, I'll check if I got any crash logs related to this from you or someone else.

  • When I have some free time later I’ll record a video for you if that helps.

Yeah @rs2000 , how do you actually get your IR files to open in Thafknar???

It had been explained here several times but here's how I do it:

    • Put all your new IRs into a folder named like you want to see it in Thafknar
    • Zip the folder and load the zip file in Thafknar
    • Tap-hold on the imported zip until the popup menu shows, then choose "Unpack to IRs"
    • to see the imported files, choose "Parameters" on the bottom.

From now on, you'll find your new IR folder in the AUv3 version.

Yup, followed your instructions and it worked like a charm, thanks, @rs2000!

  • @SNystrom Great! 😃👍🏼
