I loaded up a short wav located in audioshare, imported via ‘files’. I got 3 crashes in a row when using standalone, and that was the only module in the project. No issues using AUv3 though, oddly.

Ok thanks, I'll check if I got any crash logs related to this from you or someone else.

I’m not getting crashes but a lot of crackling, even when I set the host to the same hz as the imported was file... using latest beta and IR files from the HASR free pack 2 that I found through the forum but is found here:

    https://honestampsimreviews.com/2020/05/24/hasr-free-pack-2-0/

    It’s probably the free IR’s I guess?

    Have increased your buffer size?

  • I had in AUM settings which had just made it worse, but then prompted by you just now, I thought to check in mirack, in the module itself and increasing that to 1024 did help - I’ll see if that's still playable with my guitar later, cheers :)

If you are just using miRack for a cabinet IR for your guitar, you might be better off using a dedicated convolution app. I think that you will find a buffer of 1024 frustrating for live guitar playing. (I find anything over 256 for live guitar annoying).

Weirdly changing it to that in mirack didn’t seem to affect the timing that much, maybe the dry signal still comes through at host setting while the convolution is delayed, and that’s not as important? Anyway, I’m being a cheapskate and trying to avoid going mad on the nembrini sale but rapidly coming to the conclusion that I should just go all in on the amps as they are all lovely and just Male me want to pay washer than fiddle... (and my desktop trial period is up so all I’ve got now is the memories 😢)

Cheers for the help though 👍

If you are using the IR for a cabinet, latency is an issue because you run those 100% wet. If you are using an IR for reverb, latency is not an issue since it is essentially pre-delay.

If you don't care whether it is AU or not. Fiddlicator is free and works perfectly fine for cabinet IRs. If you want an AU, THAFKNAR is cheap and works well. It doesn't have the prettiest interface but there is no IR that is more efficient or has better sound quality (they all sound good).

Cheers, I didn’t know about fiddlicator but have been using thafknar iaa and do like the cut of its jib... and also hadn’t thought through the wet / dry thing on cabs, makes total sense now you say it, what a dope I am 🙄

    Ta once again :)

Not true! You can console yourself that you still have the iLok software. That's your's to cherish forever. ;)

Never mind, I’ll be burning that Mac soon anyway, Intel is dead apparently 🤣

I reviewed this thread and went down the IR rabbit hole because I was checking out @flo26 's video for the Nembrini Sound Master Custom Tube (50% off this weekend through Sept 13th), and realized that he was actually bypassing the Nembrini cab sim and using an IR instead. I already own a decent collection of IR cabs for use with Helix Stomp - 3Sigma are probably my favorite ones, but I have a few Ownhammers and some others, as well.

But I'm still pretty confused as to which ones work where. My "jamming" setup is through AUM, since all of the great content (Overloud, Nembrini, Eventide, etc.) is increasingly in AUv3 plugin form. Flo uses iConvolver, but that appears to be Audiobus and IAA, only.

So which IR apps that work for cabinet simulation are actually AUv3 effects at this point? Is it still just THAFKNAR that is both universal and AU? Looks like that is probably the way to go...

I tried experimenting with IR's back around 2015, but I had an iPad2 at that point, and while it sounded pretty good, it was just a CPU-hogging disaster, so I gave up. I think I was using either Fiddlicator or Altispace at that time, but neither seems to have kept up with the times.

My 2016 iPad Pro runs Overloud or Nembrini pretty comfortably, so this is worth checking out with the IR's I already have. But it would have to be a pretty dramatic improvement over the cab options within Nembrini apps or the various Overloud rigs and stock cabs.

  • Impulsation is also AUv3 — though not universal:

  • @StormJH1 : THAFKNAR is CPU-efficient and inexpensive and can even do true stereo which I don't think any others do on iOS.

The sound quality of the convolution apps are all equivalent.

Thanks! I just figured out that THAFKNAR used to be "Rooms", so I re-downloaded it. Unlocked the AUv3 IAP ($2.99), but it doesn't seem to be showing up as an AU effect at the moment. That happens sometimes for a bit, though. I'll try it out.

  • If you continue to have issues, the developer @polaron_de is fantastic and follows the forum regularly

I had an issue earlier this summer and he was on it here within minutes with the solution!

Reboot your I-device. This can happen with any newly-installed app.

This is unusual. Maybe iOS needs some time to organise its AUv3 inventory.

  • See! I told you Markus is on the ball! 🤗

Also, many users (myself included) had experienced difficulties getting the IRs into the app.

@espiegel123 provided these excellent easy instructions:

So, to get your IRs into the reverb, you first get your IR files into the THAFKNAR app -- which can be done any number of ways. Once the files are there, tap an hold a file and choose Copy To Impulse Responses.

Now, that you have imported the IR, tap on Parameters in the lower "tab bar". When in Parameters, tap on Convolution in the upper tab bar. The IR you just imported will appear in the User set. You will see a list of all the available "sets" (IR folders) on the right side of the window.

The IR should now be available in the AU.

Remember when using cabinet IRs to use the full wet setting. Also, if you are using a mono source, you may want set up the plugin to use only the left (or right) input and left (or right) output to minimize the CPU hit.

Wow fast response! Sorry I even mentioned it - restarted my phone and it was immediately there (along with another music app I had installed recently). Completely unrelated to THAFKNAR - everything’s good!

I actually found the process of sending over a zip file with my IR’s extremely easy (with the instructions in this thread). And unlike my HX Stomp, I can actually read the full names of the IR files before loading them. Remarkable! Haha. Can’t wait to try out later. Thanks all!

what a hidden gem this app is. I had it downloaded a while ago but never did anything with it because, well it's really not that obvious what this app does, besides the big record button. ok, so,you can record samples. then there's reverb, cool, and convoluted, which is empty. Maybe adding a few sample IRs to the app would help clueless newbs like me to get an idea of its potential ;)

So in very simplified layman terms, what is an IR? I get the physical process. (well of course not in depth :D ) But what does it stand for in practical terms, i.e. what does it replace? Is it basically something like an equalizer plus reverb? A frequency-dependent delay/reverb/attenuation? Can it also contain a nonlinear response? i.e. can it "include" distortion/saturation as well? I guess in the guitar world IR are mostly used as cab sim but could an IR recreate a preamp as well or even a whole effects chain?

There is a manual. It is worth reading. THAFKNAR includes links to download IRs. If you don’t know what a convolution reverb does or what it’s uses are, do a web search. You will find lots of excellent articles. You will also find articles about other uses of convolution apps and what they aren’t good for.

so to answer myself: good for time-invariant, linear stuff

It's a long one - hope it helps!

One of my favorite combinations: Freely combine any transfer curve with any impulse response.
