GarageBand is the only linear daw I have that is pretty much trouble free on my iPad Air 2.
Nanostudio 2 is great and slick until I add any third party plugins at which point it quickly descends into becoming completely unusable. It’s performance without third party plugins is excellent. Unfortunately I just have no interest in using it with only built in stuff. Works much better on my iPhone 11 though.
AUM has worked flawlessly for me too. Never crashes. Auv3 that render NS2 a sorry mess work perfectly in the same air 2 in AUM.
I also have Auria Pro. My experiences with it are terrible. Very crashy. Not worth me investigating why it is so unreliable or wasting any more time with it as I don’t like anything about the UX either.
Gadget works fine but is a closed shop and if you use NS2 the same way the performance of NS2 seems better to me. I’m not a big fan of the sequencer side of it so haven’t really pushed it. I love some of the korg instruments and would love it if ielectribe and ims20 were available as Auv3s.
BeatMaker 3 is another one that just doesn’t like to host my auv3s. It’s unreliable and very inefficient compared to AUM or GarageBand with certain third party plugins. I recently tried it again and it failed with a single instance of Model D alongside a few audio tracks with no fx added. With a buffer of 512. GarageBand could run the same setup with no issues and also let me add loads more auv3s. Again it seems OK without third party plugins but not terribly efficient even with audio tracks. It’s a very good sampler though.
So to recap. If I want to host any third party Auv3 plugins on my Air 2, the only apps I have that are not terrible are GarageBand and AUM.
I mostly use AUM on my Air2 and don’t try and use the iPad as a DAW at all. It’s much better for me as an instrument/loop maker/DIY groovebox type thing.
@klownshed 100% agree about NS2. I love the workflow of it but as soon as i add Blackhole or Alteza or Zeeon, bye bye project. I use AUM constantly and rarely have issues stacking fx and synths. BM3 is a great daw as well but once again, audio units render it usesless.
Garage band is one that i havent given a shot. Ive downloaded it and will try this evening.
I get what you're saying but just load a couple audio units in NS2 and tell me its stable. Its not. Plain and simple. No it isnt an “old ipad” but its not excellent for daws with audio units. Things arent always black and white people.
