So only 3 apps..
I’m one of those 300+ music app people: all the DAWs, tons of Synths, effects, etc...
But today I’m listening to what all my apps can do and I’m thinking I might only now need 3. A DAW(because I’m and linear DAW type guy), PureSynth(it’s got basically everything instrument I really ever use), and NU Rack(it’s like all my effects wrapped together). I’m not really into looping and modular stuff.
I’m close to deleting a bunch of apps.

Just because I voted "no, it's not a crazy idea" doesn't mean I think it is a good idea.
If you want a real challenge, why not go with 3 apps that you are not so comfortable with?
The only reason I keep most apps installed is because I don't want to go through the list of previously installed apps. I wish you could star them or keep a list of uninstalled reserves. That would be sweet.
I think it’s an interesting idea ...Is pure synth that good And it’s worth the gig space?? Maybe I need to buy it. What’s the sale price ??
@Jocphone I’m trying to get maximum comfort. It affects my creativity a little to stop and think about which app I need to pull up for whatever I’m trying to do. I want as few challenges as possible. I get challenged enough just finding the coffee pot in the morning. Or finding the morning for that matter.
@AudioGus I do what you do, but now I look back and see all these apps that I haven’t used in months. They are great apps, but now they seem redundant, give or take nuances.
I guess I’m wondering if the nuances are worth the real estate?
It's a good idea if it helps you keep focus but I'd go nuts after a while
Honestly I could probably survive with just GarageBand...
...(but I'd go nuts with the lack of non-destructive trim and having to duplicate projects to 'freeze' tracks etc. etc.).
Got ya!
I would probably go back to Gadget if I felt like that.
If I’m going with a 3 app setup:
Cubasis 3
Lagrange
Bass 808
While Cubasis doesn’t have all of the effects I want, it does have most of what I need. Lagrange is my most widely used synth, especially for strings. And Bass 808 is fantastic for making beats which is most of what I do.
An alternate combination is:
NanoStudio 2
BLEASS Alpha
ReelBus
This would be more for my experimental stuff, which is arguably what I get the most favorable feedback on.
What about Drambo?!
If I could delete Safari off my iPad I’d get more music done
With only three apps, the motivation for an AUv3 host is almost at the break-even point.
And if I don't need to record audio tracks, that helps reduce further.
My list:
Xequence2 - for MIDI arrangement
Zenbeats - for synths, effects, and recording
Auria - for edits, mixing and mastering
Yah I know what you mean. Particularly when learning a new host (and they all list AUs differently it seems (alphabetic or by company maybe etc)... very nice to clear the decks. yah I could nuke 50% and not even wince probably and be better for it.
Whatever works. If they‘re not making your life any better, there’s little reason to cling to them.
App Store sales are final, so you can get them back anyway. Although you might want to check up on what happens with discontinued apps, if you're going to delete any of those.
Backup your presets and sketches? Or don't.
Maybe it is better to start fresh and realise what you miss and bring it back, rather than being stressed and unproductive with a full deck, taking out cards and shuffling them back in.
I dunno. It's not crazy, though, @NoiseHorse
Sometimes I do something similar to spark creativity and force myself to work with what I have and it makes me think out the box. I like doing that when my stuff all starts sounding the same and I need to get out of my stagnation.
Drambo
Barkfilter
MagicDeathEyeStereo
Then wait for Drambo to get AuV3 hosting.
Only 3!?
Well then it would be:
Auria Pro for recording audio and mixing
Nano Studio 2 for Obsidian and Slate plus the midi programming
****IM1 from Korg because I know all the sounds and how to manipulate them
While I really like my Auv3 FX plugins, I'd probably need to go:
NS2
SynthMaster One
bs-16i
Those are truly my workhorse apps.
AUM
Drambo
Mozaic
A lot of tweak-ability as well as community support there.
That’s a pretty solid trifecta.
Does AUM need to count? I almost consider it part of the OS, the way I always open it first thing.
If not, I might swap in miRack.
If AUM didn’t count I’d find it really hard to limit myself to a third one.🙂
1- you can bang your head against the walls
2- buy an octatrack
3- go to the beach
I’ve got to stop reading my own thread. You’re all posting all these other great apps that is making it hard to delete - anything!
I LOVE iM1 and I Barkfilter everything. I can whistle into an old shoe and Barkfilter makes it sound good.
@mlau said:
If you keep Gadget you can delete iM1 and use Darwin, then it counts as one app
aum, fabfilters, sunvox
@supadom 👍
These threads always make me think of the awesome developers who create the unique and perfectly focused apps but they never make a top three shortlist because they do one thing very well and are just too niche.
Point well taken. I have a bunch of really amazing apps and I guess the truth is, if I really made myself use them all none of my tunes would ever sound similar. Which is a good thing.
Great now I’m on both sides of the fence again.
This is a psycosis.
It’s all just good fun! 😀
Here’s my three for the moment (not including AUM):
Expressing yourself via YT videos is certainly a skill in itself. Nice one.
