@NoiseHorse 3 apps is a fine idea. I’d muddy the waters with my choices...but you made me think about how not too long ago I had no magical apps, there were none to be had. All there was at my house was my old man’s spinet piano.
Haha. Oh yeaaah. ☺️
I actually misunderstood the original post now I re-read it. I thought it was a ‘pick three apps that can do it all’ thread but it wasn’t so apologies to the OP.
Not a crazy idea at all. Limit yourself and get creative.
Three is hard... I’d need 5
Cubasis
Nu rack
Animoog
EG Pulse
Wotja
I selected it’s a crazy idea because you’ll likely need more than 3 apps.
That said, just delete everything and just use your 3 apps and if you need something then download it again.
Utility apps are pretty great and often needed on iOS, and so are some of the nifty touchscreen only apps that make the iPad a unique music experience.
How about 3 synths and unlimited FX? 😁
@auxmux 👍
KQ Dixie, miRack in AUM. ♥️
Consindering how cheap the music apps are compared to the hw (or even the desktop) alternatives I say we don’t need to limit ourselves to 3, 5 or whatever number of apps. When I bought my first professional hw synth back in the 90’s I had to decide between the synth and a nice 10 year old BMW, their pricetags were almost the same.
I’ve been making noise with iPad for somewhat more than 1 year only. So I’m relatively new in the iPad music universe.
Over this short period I have collected way too many synth apps, effects and even daws. I use max the 5-10% of them.
BUT at the end of the day I think it was necessary to collect them to find out which workflow, which synths, effects and DAWs fit my taste, needs and my abilities.
Collecting and trying out apps were part of my iPad music learning journey. Now I feel much more confident whether to buy a new app or not.
There are fantastic apps with big and probably deserved hype around it, yet I know they are not my cup of tea, so I can say easily no for them.
If I asked 100 people what is your top 3 or 5 music app you recommend I got 100 different answer. And I’m pretty sure that the most mentioned 5 would not fit my top 5.
To sum up, do not feel “guilty” if you have too many apps, consider it as an essential part of your learning curve.
But I think it was not the purpose of this thread
My must have 3+ apps (that does not fit anyone else’s top X
) are:
NuRack
Drambo
miRack
Mozaic
hosted in Cubasis
Ok, 5 minimum
Deleting seems a bit forceful (unless part of the minimalism plan is to have max device space?)
How about using two folders: one for your Current Three apps and another for stashing everything else.
Less distractions, less decision fatigue, less clutter etc.
In iOS 14 we’ll be able to hide apps.
It would be great if there was a way to hide AuV3s in AUM. Maybe a favorites section would be better.
Ten points Gryffindor
3 is pissing into the wind.
Choose only one app - and build an entire career around it.
More chance of success.
mirack. LK . zeeon. i could make it work
it triples your success rate
This prompted me to look a PureSynth again (not purchased yet). Sounds awesome.
Crucially (for me) ... does it support MIDI program change ? and Bank Change (CC0/32) ? Haven't been able to find out so far.
One of the wisest things I read
I see threads like this and think it comes down to what are you as a musician.
If your a synth player primarily, I can see the need for a variety of apps.
If you play "actual instruments", a DAW like Cubasis or Garageband is really plenty.
If you are more of a keys player, a good piano, organ and electric piano with a good bread-n-butter synth should be enough with your DAW of choice.
Myself, that mixes acoustic instruments with samples and synths, the aim is to focus on inspiring apps once you've got your DAW of choice.
I'm in a similar boat as I finally upgraded my 1st gen Air to a 3rd gen Air and downloaded Cubasis for the 1st time. The plan is to learn it before downloading anything more as I want to focus on quality material instead of the next bright shiny new hip thing.
Since miRack is AU now, I'm thinking that my three apps could be:
NS2
miRack
ProQ
No matter how many host apps we have, we tend to use only one of them more frequently that suits our workflow. So, pick your favorite DAW (in addition to GB):
There is no need to limit ourselves to just 3 apps but we also don’t need a ton of synth apps. If we have a really powerful and flexible synth and know sound design, we could craft any sound, literally. For instance, there is no need to buy drum synths that could be designed inside SM1 or Poison-202.
FX apps - your choice.
Ok 2 apps
Auria Pro (a bit of a cheat because: IAPs)
SunVox
I’m going to try it. Will let you know how it goes.
So ... I guess it's important to avoid "game changer" apps. I you have three of them, then every time you open one up the game changes ... endless loop.
Please post results in hexadecimal.
NS2
Drambo
Troublemaker (can’t live without easy acid)
Any reason you take Troublemaker over Pure Acid?
Pure Acid !!!
Never tried pure acid because I didn’t need another groovebox , but now I know I have to
