@espiegel123 also based on what I’m reading it seems that u44 cannot send audio to an iPad via the spdif.

Thanks for the heads up. Can you post a link? The SPDIF would be handy but isn't essential -- but might make the U24 worthwhile.

I’m only basing it on this, but it’s an old review. Perhaps there’s more online about this issue. Corroboration from Zoom would confirm this.

  • The Zoom A/D converters surprised me given the price point of the unit. The pre-amps are better than many other units in this price range. They do get a little crispy in the higher frequencies but you can work around that with "avoidance techniques". Very good value, IMHO.

Does the zoom let you turn on/off direct monitoring. I have one of the early Zoom recorders which I occasionally used as an interface. The preamps are quite good and it has phantom power -- but direct monitoring of the input is always on -- so things sound weird if you are processing the input through an effect since you always have the dry signal in your ears (a few milliseconds in advance of the processed signal).

Guess it depends on which unit? Mine does. If you look online at images of the U series you’ll see the direct monitor knob.

  • , it's all about the spec baby, It's all about the specs baby.......
and "YES", the SSL does work with IPAD even though on paper it does not specify..
I'm wondering If the UAD solo works as well....Hmmm....Specs rule everything around me...

Ha. Well, for me, price is also an important spec. And for someone looking for a portable device, size and weight can also be important specs. And beyond, knowing and trusting that Zoom is a quality manufacturer carries weight with me. Not that SSL isn't, but I have actual experience with Zoom.
