Oh, ok. Gotcha. My bad. The "again" part of his question threw me off.
Nah bro, that's not what I was asking. I to-o-o-o-o-o-tally get why Atom may appeal to someone over Drambo.
And I totally understand that for you, like others have mentioned, Atom fits your needs for your workflow, and it truly did for me even after LK introduced MIDI-out. But again, specifically for me right now, Drambo works without hassle because I made an AUM template with Drambo (and Atom for piano roll edits) as the hardware-to-midi-brain-ish... thingy... sequencer (admittedly, the initial setup was a little hassle).
I agree. to each her/his own. The forum does make Drambo seem like God-Mode-App these days.
Atom, LK, Rozeta, etc. I still use them all. Even wanna get Riffer. I have a thing for sequencers lately. Ha.
The only thing you can do to change the midi channel is modify it with another plugin such mfxStrip after it. Usually the channel is irrelevant in AUM. You just set up whatever AUM channel you want to receive from Atom and it all just works.
However, there are times when channel is needed, such as if you have a plugin that can only receive on a certain channel. Or, in the case where you've recorded input from more than one midi channel into a single Atom instance, and would like to separate that out to control two instruments.
Most times it's not an issue, but it can be.
TBH, I've been thinking of going this route myself. I find recording in Drambo as fluid as anything I've used once it's set up. I don't know why, but I end up needing less fiddling with the recorded results than with other apps. Said fiddling is less convenient when needed, but better practice is to re-record anyway.
The other good thing is having all the added possibilities of cycle conditions, humanize, etc. to get more mileage out of those patterns once I have 'em. I just need to be disciplined not to get distracted by all the bells and whistles until later. Drambo could become #1 idea capture vehicle for me at some point. But for now Atom is my post-it notes pad.
Not at all. There is a place for investing in a developer and a product which seems to be going somewhere. Call it investment, or venture capital on a small scale. There is a risk with this of course, and with Atom it hasn't yet paid off, but we can hope it will at some point. I hope others might choose to invest in me if I was the dev concerned, but I also hope I would reward their trust, so it is a balanced decision for sure. If a dev launches a new app after letting one slide for a while, I would be more cagey.
agree 100% use the apps now for what they can do to help your create... only exeption must be never buy IAA apps in 2020 (@Turntablist mite wanna turn the dial down to 5 ish heh ppl in get grumpy
We're all adults here. Surely we can withstand a little bluntness.
@Turntablist is right.
He’s right to people that agree with him. He’s wrong to people that don’t.
Much faster to set up and everything remains within one environment. But it's clip-based, not linear, which is a philosophical cornerstone for Xequence. Although Xequence is a far better editing environment.
Quicker, easier, more readily accessible setup. No going back and forth between apps.
Really? I just wanted a midi looper to make music with and I got one.
Now, I’ve got this pyramid scheme you might be interested in...
Glad this thread was started, helped to answer a few questions , never paid attention to LK thought it was an iOS app for Ableton users. I like the idea of ATOm for quick work in AUM but have held off due to the last update being a year ago(?)
LK looks good and seems to be constantly updated, I don’t need an app to do everything but would at least like it to be supported through a few iOS updates. I really like what I see with ATOM, midi file export would be amazing addition but the work around with routing through AUM doesn’t seem too cumbersome.
Call me naive but I picked it up based on discussion and screenshots of work in progress features/minor improvements which would make it really useful for me.
As it stands, I’ve never used it much beyond learning the UI etc as it’s missing a couple of somewhat essential usability things (for me ymmv of course).
Not really an answer to the initial question but hopefully a moderate opinion
Slightly frustrating as I’d like to recommend it unreservedly since it has several features that are really unique in any piano roll I’ve used and some slick implementation but alas...
Hopefully @blueveek is alive and well and might have time one day to fulfill the potential of the app.
TLDR I dunno
One excellent use I've found, somewhere on this forum, is to use it in CB3 for the clip layering, which allows you to see notes you used on other tracks. It's great for emulating desktop workflow and making matching scales and chords much easier.
That is pretty cool. Going to use that.
I use it to play midi loops in CB2 without needing to use the loop mode in the CB2 transport.
That loop mode is notoriously bad for keeping consistent timing.
In terms of the features that seemed to be promised ... and maybe ones I was hoping would arrive, promised or not e.g. MIDI file import. But I have my workflow, you have yours
Agree, that’s a little silly. Especially because it is not a finite product that will run out of stock and if it disappears from the AppStore then likely wouldn’t have been a good investment anyway.
I’ve never bought atom because it just didn’t seem to make sense to get something for quick ideas when I’d have to fire up the host, then atom, then sound source, route everything. I know there’s session recall but if I want a sketch pad I just go for Gadget with it’s amazing sequencer and a shedloads of sounds.
We’re all different I guess.
I feel many people may have overlooked the great manipulation tools within Atom..
There’s a lot more to it besides being quick + easy.. which of course is the main reason for using it..
-from https://audioveek.com/ (my highlights)
1) Loop record
Grow your ideas over any number of bars. Overdub drum loops, layer complex melodies, or even record an entire track. Arm recording in multiple instances, in the background, receiving from hardware or even other audio units. Piano Roll is always sample accurately synced with the host.
2) Step input
Quickly create sequences. Insert notes respecting grid length, and resize them to any duration. Layer chords in one operation. Just send the notes, Piano Roll takes care of the rest.
3) Extensive editing tools
All the standard editing tools you are used to are implemented, pen for entering notes at any length, brush for painting continual notes at grid size and scissors for slicing.
Advanced tools allow you to be productive. Grow notes backwards or forwards. Group notes with additive selection. Select rows or chords in one operation. Time and pitch flip. Velocity editing is precise and unobtrusive. With Piano Roll, anything you need is a tap, hold, or swipe away.
3) Non destructive quantize
Quantised or not? You decide when, and how much! Enable full quantisation beforehand with grid snapping. Turn it back off, or adjust the strength afterwards on an already recorded sequence. Choose the quantisation percentage for note starts, note ends and even note durations. In Piano Roll, you have full control over timing precision.
4) Dynamic stretching
Stretch a clip from 4 bars to 8. Fix the note lengths or extend them in harmony. In Piano Roll, your sequences are elastic.
5) Advanced time signatures
Does 4/4 sound boring to you? Create complex polyrhythms by choosing any timing. From 3/8 to 11/8. From 2/1 to 17/16. Piano Roll lets you invent your own rhythm.
6) Advanced tempo settings
Negative BPM? No problem. Pick a tempo for every clip and play backwards or forwards. Multiply host tempo or choose something arbitrary, all with extreme accuracy. Piano Roll gives you control over tempo like never before.
7) Scales
Never go outside a scale, or go chromatic and add spice to the melody. With scale overlays, your music isn’t forced to sound in a predetermined way, and you aren’t forced to be a music theory genius to sound the way you want. Piano Roll gives you the ability to decide in which key to be and when.
8) Visibility layers
Aid composition by overlaying other clips from other plugin instances over the one you’re editing. Make sure your chords are in harmony with the melody, visually. Piano Roll roll helps you focus where you need, when you need it.
10) State saving
Your sequences are saved alongside the project you already work with. And they’re loaded back automatically when opening up a project. Clips can be saved as host presets. Piano Roll is in perfect harmony with the host you already use.
@royor lots of brilliant ideas here, thanks for that. I like this app but have yet to explore it to its full potential.
Yes it is, you dont buy a tin of beans and then complain because it isn’t spaghetti, inflammatory? What’s it like up there on that fluffy cloud in perfect wonderland.
😂
Probably not, only because I never use it. That's my issue though. It is very good for the task I wanted to achieve.
Without MIDI file import/export or random sequence generation, it doesn't do much for me.
...yet. (I hope)
I found a great fix for for both issues in AUM - Import the midi strip with the Atom nodes into your brand new (already dated) session..
I made a Atom template with 4 of them in 1 midi strip.. that’s it.. I simply import that and then I don’t have to worry about renaming or re-dating the session.. and you can do this at any point of the session.. not only when you start it BUT once you’re hours in on that epic jam.. 😎
Thanks for the original idea of using a template for multiple Atoms.. 👍
Well done, Royor.
@ExAsperis99 Thanks.. As much as I use AUM, I hardly ever import parts of other sessions or templates.. realizing I already have many of the pieces already prebuilt, I’m just trying to save some time + head scratching.. especially when I need to get that idea down NOW.. another few seconds and it may disappear from my noggin.. 😁
