Korg gadget costs around 300-400.00 to complete...how the hell are you calling this a spoiling?
    Even reason 11 is cheaper...

Okay so now let’s compare lpx or Reason 11 to Korg gadget...HAHAHAHAHAHAHA GTFO!
    Next.

Certainly can’t compare to LPX in any way but in Korgs defense, I don’t think any software ios or otherwise can if we bring price and value into the equation. I don’t even think there’s a close second.lol.

I'd say Mixcraft Pro is really solid with tons of value.

  • If KORG allowed you to purchase a Gadget without having to shell out for the standalone version as well then this would give an indication of the love or otherwise that they have for it.

Ah yes, the often overlooked and extremely underrated Mixcraft. Don’t have it in LPX league but I’d say it’s certainly passes the value test. The VsTs and Effects are top notch as is the price and cpu efficiency. I have it on my work PC and I must agree, it is definitely solid and valuable.

I'll be honest, I regretted even admitting I used it. I've been flamed so much over the years for saying it's my main, DAW it's nice to see people actually give it some praise. :D

I’m probably the only one who feels this way but if Korg made their loop braces snap to grid rather than multiples of a bar I’d delete every other iOS music app (except maybe AUM, Riffer, and AudioShare 🙂 oh and Endless too.)

How would you see looping working? Right now everything is multiples of bars, so if one pattern has only one bar and others have four, the one bar pattern loops four times. How would you expect it to work with a loop that is less than a bar? If it was three beats, would it loop every three beats and stop in the middle if the scene changed? If it was 5 beats and the rest were four beats would the whole scene loop every 5 beats? How would the other bars loop? Every 4 beats?

There are other ways to handle a bar with a length non divisible into the other loops, so I'm interested in how people would see that playing out.

It would play out as a 5:4 Polyrhythm

When switching scenes, which would win, the 5 or the 4? One would need to be chosen to play to its end and the other would need to stop in the middle somewhere. What I'm saying is, unless all patterns are the same length or a multiple of each other, when does the scene as a whole loop or stop?

Depends on if it’s a 4 inside of 5 or 5 inside of 4. I’m not particularly advocating for this inside of Gadget btw... I’d imagine it would be a headache to implement for Korg but I admit it would be pretty cool.

I’d say the longest ‘loop’ as the dominant one. The way it is now with different length tracks.
Would be cool if the shortest ones keep looping their own length as long as the same scene is playing (so only restarting when a new scene is selected).

Good point @wim. I’m thinking about this from an Ableton perspective where scene looping is not locked into multiples of a bar because you can trigger scenes based on grid values. The grid values determine how long the scene keeps playing before playing the next scene. This feature of Live lets you create interesting polyrhythms by “playing” session view. I wish gadget had this too. The loop brace snapping would still be useful in gadget if you’re letting a scene loop more than once. As @maxwellhouser said this would create polyrhythms. Easier said then done though.

Gadget’s excellent per scene time sig offers similar possibilities.

  • It was more of a mental exercise than anything. I was just imagining the discussions the Korg team would be having if they decided to do something like that. How to fit it within their existing looping / scene scheme is doable but would have details to decide.

Monopoly is probably where they dropped the ball. That synth should have been a new classic on iOS and not gone right into IAA oblivion.

I’m just saying Korg gadget is pricey, it’s just parted out so nobody pays attention to musical Pokémon. Like, my mc707 has literally made gadget obsolete for my use...bigger faster stronger!

    Sorry. ✨🚽✌️

Just wanted to mention that I deleted my original comments here. Also elsewhere in other threads. 'Cause they provoked aggressive or stupid behavior. And I wasn't prepared for that -to get dissed because I love an whatever App! 😄 ...
Really... I was shocked! But also I was shocked being shocked!! Maybe I got "too sensitive" lately ☺️ ...

But okey. Now I know it. "They" are also here, in that kind of forum.

Well, I'm just a pure Musician, and herein at least more of an "App-Lover", than a technical theoretical Freak. I mean "Freak" in a good way!...

It's great to get Information and Opinions from all your Knowledge, and listening to some Music and Experiments of you! That's why I decided to become a member of this forum.

So, anyway ... I'm going to stay here. Even if my contributions are maybe not on that standard of Superlative 😬 ...

    But back to GADGET!...:
    Yes!!! I love it.
For the Music what I do, and for the Sounds I absolutely really love -it's perfect!
I mean "perfect" with all it's being "not really perfect".
I've been through all known Desktop-Software of the last 21 years. Since I got my first Mac...
But now since nearly two years I found working on iOS and iPad or even on the iPhone MEGA-FUN !!! I started again composing and recording as like in my young 4-Track Tape Days.
And Gadget and all Korg Synths reminds me on that Sounds from then when I used my first Keyboards ...
And that's why I totally love it.

But I also love "all the Others" too!! 😁 ... For other or same reasons...
I invested a Fortune for all these "Toys"...!!!...
BUT as I said - to me it's totally worth, because on this way I found Fun in being creative in Music again.

(sorry for my bad english and small/cheap vocabulary... german 🥳)

    However.

    That's it.

    Greetings, Groby
    ✌️
    .

+1 to the many facets here, including a German using English, a sentimental thing that is another story...

Gadget is fun and powerful and the sounds can be very tasty

I’ve dissed it over the years but came around especially when I’ve shipped stems from sessions into Auria Pro

That workflow came from the thought experiment from another thread: you only get 3 apps. Mine initially were AP, FLSM and SunVox. The theory was get 3standalone playgrounds with boxes of toys inside then bring them into AP that also has a box of toys. Now I’ve cheated and added the 4th, Gadget, and long may it wave.

  • @Groby No need to apologize for your lack of English. English isn't a requirement.

  • Gadget + all IAPs will always be with me as long as it’s possible to export stuff from it.
I don’t care about IAA even though it currently makes sampling Gadget a bit easier.
(ie. no need to create a track, pattern and export).

For some strange reason Gadgets export to AudioShare doesn’t have the same bit-depth and sample-rate options as the other export options!?

And I wish the iTunes export would be changed to Documet Picker so I could export to any location, sure I can export to the Gadget folder and use Files.app to move the files but...
...I can’t even export to a folder inside the Gadget folder as all files are exported to the top level where all the project files are too creating chaos :D

I hope to see a Gadget update sooner rather than later...

  • @WillieNegus Yep... that’s my only real frustration with Gadget.
You were using it on you phone right? It’s really bad on my 2016 SE. But also worse than anything else on iPad Pro 9.7 :'(

@WillieNegus Contrary to what a lot of people assume (even some Korg support replies I got) it’s the graphics/animations that play a big roll in the cpu heat/battery issue.
Being in the main song screen has less impact than opening a gadget and playing live with the sequence running and piano roll on screen.

I got Deemax because I work in Gadget only (start to finish). I use it on every track before uploading it to ‘gadgetcloud’. But if you export your track(s) and finish elsewhere you probably won’t need it. Korg’s demo shows the difference it makes:

I feel if Korg does create a Version 3(or hopefully 2.5) with a linear timeline view, that would really set it over the top. I'm pretty set on all the included gadgets and IAPs I've made. I've dropped about $110 on gadget alone I think haha.

Yeah I don’t use Gadget much because the sequencer absolutely sucks. Very nice collection of instruments though.

Usually when I’m looking for this type of thing to work with I go with caustic 3, sounds aren’t as good but I go for a dirty lofi feel anyway usually and it has a linear song mode.

This time it was my iPad Pro 10.5 at the beach. Couldn’t believe it. Was really in a groove too. Turned off all unnecessary functions...doesn’t matter. Gadget is a hungry hungry beast.

On my commute I would get about an hour out of my sessions, regardless of host (BM3, NS2, AUM, Gadget etc) once I hit around the 80% CPU mark for about 40+ min, bye bye battery. I also seemed to find (or at least placebo-ize) that warm/hot days are more likely to eat up batteries than cold ones.

My workflow in BM3 usually gives me more time than other iOS DAWs because I rarely use AU midi. I like to browse, tweak then sample AUs. Then I eject them to free up CPU for effects. Most of my BM3 projects are exclusively audio chops, samples and occasionally my voice. I just had a 3 hr BM3 session this morning beginning with 89%.

Interesting. I am pretty AUed up (insts and fx) most of the time. yah could be the AU insts that are the drain.

On another note, does anyone have Deemax? I’ve avoided it. Does it make a justifiable difference?

I would advise you to avoid it forever.. This is one of the very rare things for which I asked for a refund by complaining to Apple (IAPs are usually not refunded).

The reason : this thing is completely useless, you can get a much better result by using the built-in compressor and playing with the levels.

Edit : for the same price (Deemax is around $10), buying Barricade is a better investment !

Really? The demo was pretty convincing. I definitely need to learn more about compression. I already have Barricade but shamefully haven’t used it much. Gotta dive in. Many times I do more harm mucking with compression.

My interest in Deemax is that I do want the option to be able to finish in Gadget. Many of my tracks sound thin and want a boost. It’s currently showing 14.99 so I guess while I wait for a sale I’ll look into learning compression as a limiter instead.

DeeMax was also my biggest Gadget purchase regret. Wish I'd thought to make more noise and get a refund, too. Far better for me to stick Gadget in AUM and use one of the many better available options.

Really rough draft part of a song I’m writing in Gadget. At the beach using basic headset mic and didn’t spend much time on the beat so yeah...really rough. But more importantly, loving gadget again. Sequencer really sucks for recording audio but I’m sure in time I’d figure out workarounds if I really needed to. Fortunately, I don’t.lol

Another issue is that you can’t just bounce or export just a scene. Or, even just a sum of all tracks as a single wave. Unless I’m missing it, export sucks.

Couldn't you export the track and trim it down to where you want it? I'm not sure what you're referring to on the second part. You can export a full track or stems.

  • I’m pretty sure that if you export an Ableton project it writes separate wavs for each clip. Dunno if that helps.

Definitely does by scene when you export to an ableton project

  • @WillieNegus said:
Scene export would be great tho.

Yepp, especially since all the built-in Gadgets have a ~10s limit or something like that.
Imagine if Bilbao & Vancouver allowed longer samples and had a snap to division or transient option when automating the start point? That would be so nice...

A direct ’export scene to...’ (put any sampler/audio Gadget here) would make re-sampling a breeze...

  • @WillieNegus I was just thinking if you want a quick and dirty scene export you could do something like "save as" Name it something else like "Song X- Edit Scene "1etc... Open that session and delete all the other scenes and do the export that way.

Convoluted but it would work. I don't know if they add handles to the exported wav or anything but you could try it. But I would double and triple check that you aren't deleting in the main session...

    Exactly that.

Also, I wonder if it would take a complete rewrite to lock parameter changes to scenes. Currently, if you change a parameter on a track it effects that instrument in all scenes which is really annoying especially on audio tracks.

I prefer it like this (lock to scene would be fine as option of course). In Electribe Wave parameters are saved to pattern, which is horrible if you want to change the volume of a sound (for instance). Then you’d have to change it in all patterns that are part of that song.

Perhaps a workaround for you could be to record (or draw) an automation for that knob in the scene you want. After that, change the knob back to the old position. It will affect all scenes, except the one with your automation.

  • I find Korg Gadget very useful. However, one of the things that bothers me is the limitation to insert a midifile.
This can only be done into a new project. The option to do this into an existing scene, is not possible.
