vel=0 is sonically muted. but that will not work if sending midi to a non velocity sensitive app
btw heres a thread about rests in Atom by @TheAudioDabbler

Did you think of adding a mute notes function ? That would be a blast

Do you mean setting the velocity to 0? If so, the new automation panel makes that super easy. Otherwise, let me know, I've heard people talk about "adding rests when in step input", which is a workflow I'm still trying to understand.

I think more like muting C3 or E2 for example.

So something like a custom scale, that's essentially chromatic minus certain notes?

Hi do you envisage that your app could include the functionality of a clip being launched or stoped (quantized) via a cc, note, or maybe a program change message?

Yes, this new version is going to be automateable. You'll be able to trigger and stop clips via midi messages (also sent by other Atom instances )

I’m just guessing here, but maybe a toggle switch for each key or for each drum sound in a live drum loop sequence.
eg. Mute only the kick while playing etc.

  • great news for the velocity ... i was also thinking of a function that would allow to mute some notes from all the notes i set up in piano roll .... it’s possible in Logic or cubasis 3 or many daws

  • mute and unmute that said 🙃

A midi note-on with velocity=0 is the same thing as a note-off. This is per the midi spec. Many keyboards and apps don't send note-off, they send note-on with velocity=0. iOS apps recognize this.

A midi note-on with velocity=0 is the same thing as a note-off. This is per the midi spec. Many controllers and apps don't send note-off, they send note-on with velocity=0. iOS apps recognize this or they wouldn't work right in lots of cases.

The only thing is, @blueveek , some synths don't deal well with orphaned note-off messages. If you send a note-on, velocity 0 message followed by a note-off, because you've set the velocity to zero, that's two orphaned note-off messages for a poorly coded synth to stumble over. It'd be best if a note with velocity zero didn't send anything. I'm guessing you already planned to do it that way that though. ;)

roger that, so we need a note-off msg to ensure no hang notes @wim ? or not? heh or is simply MUTE better?

  • edited September 2020

I think the proper way to 'mute' notes on a piano roll is to simply skip playing the muted notes.
(In practice each note has a status flag stating if it should be played or not).
This is the way it works in Logic...

No, not really. A note-on message at zero velocity is a note off message. The only loose end is there are too many note-off messages in that case. That's not a problem for the vast majority of apps, but it could confuse an app here or there. I'm sure @blueveek already has this sorted.

Ability to mute a note without putting it's velocity to zero would be handy. It's quicker, and you wouldn't have to remember the previous velocity when you wanted to un-mute it. I've not seen that feature in other piano rolls.

  • Excuse me if this has been asked answered before, but do we know what the maximum clip length will be? And are there options to run it at fractions or multiples of the project BPM? That's probably not so standard but I like the idea of it.

The existing Atom can run at divisions or multiples of the host BPM. I assume the same will be true in the updated.

Unlimited length. Tempo can be changed per clip (can also go negative).

Yes, you’ll be able to pick one or multiple channels. See the channel button in the top left in the screenshots

I'm also sensitive to light (sold my Circuit because of the pad brightness at night and no option on the firmware back then to reduce it)
But on dark environment ,low brightness with a light theme is more friendly for my eyes .
It's good to have an option :)

Atom will respect the system preference. So if your iPad is set to dark mode, it'll be the dark theme, otherwise it's the light theme. Hope this works for y'all.

I am planning another update with custom user themes, but it's in the ever growing backlog of features for v2.1

Sorry to be a pain, but any idea on ETA? Any beta? This looks amazing, massive kudos to you, sir!
