Extending the idea of a virtual launchpad.. I now have a template that mimics Ableton/Push and includes 7 tracks with 7 Atoms each.

You can launch scenes, and the patterns choke as you would expect.

This will be given out free for everyone when Atom2 launches.

Looks promising! The ChordPolyPad scenario shown here is certainly also possible with Tonality‘s very powerful AU Chord Pad module. It may not look as elegant but it also offers grids up to 12x12 customizable color coded pads and the advantage of connecting to patchstorage for easy exchange of many future templates to come.

Maybe it’s me.. but.. this seems like overkill.. Maschine 2.1 introduced a slick solution of having one ‘long’ clip which can be divided into patterns along the looped timeline..One pad can reference a looped section of the file...

Edit.. the idea is you can have more control of your project.. without having so many instances of ATOM.

While Maschine is still one of my favourite bits of software, it couldn’t be much further from being modular, completely different paradigm, that being said, I am also a proponent of less instances the better within the bounds of fully modular, so you can assume I have hammered this point home throughout development.

That being said, I actually challenged Tom to come up with a virtual Launchpad setup, which is what he nailed here.

Well, the beauty of software is, it is not written in stone.. Just throwing that out..

    Seems the 'infrastructure' is there..

Will this use the session mode on the launchpads?

Yes. Atom 2 already supports Session, Mixer, Note and Custom modes on launchpads. With some more features planned for future updates.

That sounds promising for use with other MIDI controllers/sequencers.

I apologize if this has already been asked, but in addition to playing/launching each Atom 2 instance, can MIDI also be used to pause and rewind the playhead in each instance? I'm referring to sequencing the sequencers, analog modular-style.

    Thanks.

No, I think it is written in C.

Well, hopefully we will ‘C’ it soon..

I also kind of want to point out that this requirement is temporary – using other AUs for controlling all of the Atoms is a nice demonstration of just some of Atom's modularity. While I anticipate many will prefer taking the modular approach to an extreme, "modular" shouldn't be an used as an excuse for "inconvenient" or "complex": it defers some of the work I have to do in the short term, so that I can focus on making sure every feature is super tight at release. I'd like to build a "master Atom hub" that looks like Ableton's Session view, fairly soon after release.

@blueveek wow that sounds great. Make it work with hardware controllers like launchpad too.

This needs a big huge heart emoji reply. I'm glad you're giving clarification here because the solutions demonstrated before, while admittedly very clever and interesting, aren't all that elegant. Having a bespoke orchestrator will really tie the atomic Atoms together.

Balancing complexity, modularity and convenience can be hard. Or at least, very time consuming to implement! Just trying to do things one step at a time, one free hour a day at a time :)

Agreed! I’m currently trying to find the best substitute ‘launchpad’ that I can use on my iPhone to control atom 2 on iPad. Looks like chordpolypad might be a good answer.

Although will probs just buy a proper launchpad at some point

No ETA yet, but the beta is going extremely well and the developer has already said he is hoping to finish this year.

    Hope this helps :)

    Confirming this.

I'm also working with Jonatan to add even deeper integration between Atom and AUM (like automatically figuring out which track and slot an instance is in AUM, so it shows up on the proper pad on Launchpads without any additional user setup). We're figuring out a bunch of new standards for how hosts can communicate with AUs, that every other developer can adopt.

We've also found a few timing accuracy issues that seemingly come from Ableton Link, and only happen on certain devices. So I'm adding simple drift and latency compensation logic into Atom, while both of us are trying to see how we can improve accuracy even more.

  • Cool beans
    Take ya time
Get it right the first time
    Good luck

Me too. I get that not every dev wants to have this kind of regular interaction with their adoring public but it builds interest. I just wish someone would change the thread title to Atom Piano Roll updates.
