Not yet. I’ve added this to the backlog, and as mentioned before, “features for power users” is a theme I’m quite interested in understanding more in the future.
Wouldn’t that be something!
🤤
OK... but the problem with AUM is that doesn't have a timeline that you can situate the arrangement. It starts ALWAYS from the beginning and that is all, for what I know. We still need some DAW for composition and arrangement of a song.
There's a very clear comparison between linear and clip-launching workflows that @Paulinko made earlier in this thread, I encourage you to read it: https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/comment/874811/#Comment_874811
These are very different ways of composing and making song arrangements. Some people strongly prefer the former, some strongly prefer the latter, and I can definitely empathise with both schools of thought. Atom 2 is leaning heavily on enabling the clip-launching approach for now, while allowing for some linear arrangement approaches with "master Atom arrangers" and editable loop markers (but optimises for modular workflows).
Ultimately, one size never fits all, so I invite everyone to explore and find their preferred workflow. I for one used to be a die-hard linear fan until I found out about clip launching and scene grouping, but who knows: I could switch back
I also used to be a die-hard linear sequencer user too - which is why (full disclosure) I only purchased AUM after joining the Atom2 beta.
Clip launching finally clicked for me with this app (and a Launchpad) and I now really enjoy both approaches.
When stagelight was my main jam, I used to like coming up with ideas in the clip launcher bit, then ‘recording’ to the linear timeline view later to arrange. I’m hoping I’ll be able to do something similar in atom.
I’m guessing the master arranger will have a moveable play head, and hopefully loop points (please note this is not a feature request... yet) so it won’t matter about AUM always starting from the beginning?
The master Atom arranger (which is just another Atom instance) has its playback still linked the host. However, loop points/markers make it possible to target an individual part of an arrangement – and start playback from a later part of the song.
Regarding this, @winconway is now working on a bunch of cool templates to make it easy to get started. But building a project from scratch should also be fairly quick if you're used to AUM.
Loop points/markers sounds perfect 👌
So if you were to set up your Atom "particles" like so would they automatically link to pad on the launchpad or will you have to manually assign them?
Launchpad mapping of Atoms is independent of their location in AUM, and as you'll see in upcoming videos, there are multiple good reasons why this setup is preferable.
I guess each instance has it's own unique identifier which Atom tracks, there's no way of Atom knowing their location in AUM midi "tracks" since they aren't like a daw track which has it's own midi port etc.. unless Jonatan adds some kind of identifier to the channel the plugins can read. idk
I'm already in contact with Jonatan and trying to integrate it as much as possible/reasonable with AUM.
It started with node colors, transport indicators, and custom clip naming. I'm hoping we can do the same for track/scene assignment and a lot more. I'm exploring how far we can take it within the AUv3 standards, in a way that still aligns with the vision each of us has for their app, and also allows other developers to use these APIs.
I'll keep you posted.
Very interesting @blueveek looking forward to see how this develops
Sounds dope!
AUM does have a timeline. You can scroll the time by dragging on time indicator. If you don't rewind after playing , play continues from where you left off.
Here’s a new little teaser for Atom 2.
This time I am demonstrating how Atom is able to trigger itself, aka ‘Song mode’. Just one of many different uses for this entirely modular tool.
You’ll see on-screen I have an instance of Atom labelled Sequencer, which is triggering various combinations of other Atoms in different groups to create a sequence.
No launchpad required.
Is this thing ever coming out
That is DEFINITELY what we need! Can't wait for this!
Tom. Your such a teaser!! 😂😂. Great stuff. Can’t wait!!!!
Touché, the anticipation is making me crazy 😜
Of course not. Why would you even think that?
Perhaps teaser was the wrong word then
I am merely trying to inspire and excite whilst we wait for release.
Oh I’m excited 😆. Thanks.
Almost like the classic Musix-X on the Amiga. Ie. a master sequence triggering other sequences
Music-X had the option to add meta-data to the trigger events, like transpose, program-change, note-velocity etc.
This could actually be done in Atom 2 I guess if for example the note velocity cold be mapped to sequence transpose?
I know, overkill but I always think about the automation options...
(I'm lazy I sequence on pattern and re-use it as much as possible. That's partially why I love the transpose option in midiSTEPs).
Btw. what apps where you sequencing?
(I have a whole bunch of apps got no immediate clues)
Looking forward to the day Atom 2 drops...
Cheers!
This can be done in AUM by mapping MIDI events sent from the “arranger” Atom, into the parameters of other Atom “clips”. Transpose, probability, tempo and a bunch more are already available. These emitted MIDI events could be either the existing notes, or additional CC data that can be sent out from the (yet to be teased and still being polished) automation panel. Would that cover the “overkill” scenario you’re talking about?
Haha Samu, thought the same thing
which bass is that? Sounds really really nice
One question: can you trigger these launch buttons also manually with a fingertip?
Oh yeah, me too. Really worthy 2.0
Here’s the plugin list for my ’Song mode’ video - especially for @Samu and @david_2017
Bassline is the 303 from Pure Acid. Drums are also from Pure Acid (midi channel 10). Organ sound was made from scratch in Mela Synth, and Flute courtesy of the Bismarck BS16i (default soundbank).
@tk32 thank you man! Appreciate the sharing. Yeah, pure acid as AU plug. I should not forget that. Good call
