Music with Guska - Visual creation by Patrick Guillot
I really like those lazy horns accenting the guitar, if fact the lazy feel of the song is great in general.
Did Elliot Smith have an early unknown 80’s electronic phase. Good stuff.
Maybe it’s a new language like Sigur Ros.
Very well done. Almost had me thinking it was similar to Pachelbels Canon but then would flitter away to some other interesting melody line. Is this all iOS? Which apps did you use?
Haunting. I really like the feedback-like sound, it gives the track an edgy feeling and contrasts beautifully with the more gentle melodic elements. There's a real feeling of melancholy here.
Ah, @Kitusai you’ve done it again. Somehow you manage to create something fresh and different every time yet each piece belongs in a space that is all your own. I love it!
And, yes: it’s a duduk. From the Taq.sim app, in fact. Such a wonderful sound.
Oops. I meant to reference you on that one, @taqsim
That’s a gorgeous set of sounds in your app. Love the duduk!
Here's my August entry as #SEONN. How's everything going @richardyot ?
@seonnthaproducer Nice track. The music is well done. I think there are some out there who would be shocked at the quality of music coming out of GarageBand. I may mix the vocals a bit differently, almost blending with the instruments as this feels like a lounge track.
@mjcouche, wow Michael, that’s great. I remember you wrote me about your project a while ago. Excellent evolution and pitch perfect chorus at the end. Keep it up, please.
@DavidEnglish, love this kind of stuff. Reminds me of David Johanssen and that famous low growler guy whose name is eluding me at the moment.
@qryss, great to hear your stuff. What is that vocal instrument?
@Kitusai, beautiful minimalism and apt visuals. Thanks. Makes me want to explore the genre.
@richardyot Caught my attention from the beginning. Very well composed. I like that I can hear your sound maturing overtime. The vocals do seem a bit loud in the mix, but solid overall.
@mjcouche I like that pulsing synth. Caught my attention from the get-go. I do think some of your high end gets a little ringy at times. Overall a nice cinematic piece.
@DavidEnglish Great use of samples. Really dig the jazzy feel. I do feel like a bit of delay in places would make the pauses seem less abrupt and hollow. Cool visuals by the way!
@qryss Oh this is nice. I feel like people are definitely banging slow but heavy in a movie somewhere. Fun stuff! I think the bass could be brought forward a little more. Just 2-3dB would make it pop.
@Kitusai Very fun and kind of childlike. I like it. Only thing I’d say is the mix seems a bit off. Some of the elements hit a bit too hard?
@seonnthaproducer Nice to hear some new stuff from you. Really dig the groove here, nice composition with a variety of instruments. I think some additional processing on the vocals may help it blend in a bit more. They stand out almost too much for my taste.
So I think I may have gone a bit overboard on the low end with this one. Instrumental as usual.
@LinearLineman thank you for the kind words.
@DukeWonder Thank you. I think you’re right. Definitely some EQing that needs to go on here. When I get the final mix ready I’ll keep that in mind.
I liked your track a lot. Some good “industrial” sounds in there. Like the actual metal.
Would love to hear it when you polish it up!
Thank you. I hadn’t thought of it like that, but I like it. I think the real game changer here was adding FuzzPlus3 on the 808 bass.
@mjcouche @DukeWonder Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, vocals are still a work in progress. Tried making these vocals with as little effects as possible as a way to get out of my comfort zone.
Also, I did just recently get a Mackie Cr3 so I should hopefully be able to hear mixes a bit better.
Random Trivia: The vocals were actually recorded from a USB mic connected to an android phone. Turns out that android dongles are really cheap lol.
Good track, the sparse production suits it well. I would be tempted to mix the vocals a bit lower to help them bed in with the music a bit more and then maybe add some mild compression to the Master Strip to glue it all together.
Love the dark vibe, that lead sound is also really beguiling - it's so unusual, really nice sound design. The track is pretty simple overall but the main riff bears repeating because it's really good. Nice work.
Thank you. I’m planning to have all of the songs on this first album be somewhat repetitive but interesting instrumental hip-hop beats. Decided to go that route rather than pestering people nonstop to buy my beats.
@DukeWonder thanks for the comments - much appreciated. A few people have said my track sounds like it’s part of a soundtrack - or a theme song. I like your suggested application for it! When people are making ‘close contact’ films again, perhaps. And I hear you on the bass. I’ve tried it at various levels and I think it could indeed go up a notch.
I love the sounds in your track! That darker sound is very much what gets me interested and drew me in right from the start. The riff is great but I think a vocal would really make this one - I kept waiting for something to happen and a voice would have been perfect (I would go for a female voice to give a contrast). But still an excellent track.
@LinearLineman thanks for giving my track a listen and taking the time to comment! The singer is a Kontakt library called Realivox Blue. It costs about $100 USD - seems to be on permanent sale - and is a collection of samples, cleverly cut so that you can recreate sung words. It’s a bit of a pain creating lines of lyrics and some words sound a little foreign (but I like that! Sometimes she sounds Scandinavian to me) but the end result can be surprisingly convincing - albeit with only one voice to choose from.
My intention is to assemble a few songs that work together and then go in search of a real singer. This is the first and a second is about halfway through being birthed.

@seonnthaproducer very cool, very pleasant music. The sound-producing is just « impeccable »
@DukeWonder I like this low end treatment, it enhances the dark side of this track. The sub around 2’50’’ is especially great. It sounds as a theremin that would have muted under the ground instead of being aired. I don’t know if I sound clear :-)
@mjcouche I rarely find back my musics in the mess of the hard drives. I took my miner’s lamp and… yes got it! The main theme is from iPad Model 15/Arpeggio/Clickybellarp. Other tracks are played on Reaper with some Kontakt’s instruments (pan drums, bolon, waterharp and frozen strings). I don’t know what plays Guska though.
@richardyot
Very nice instrumental opening that's airy and reflective. The voice doubling works especially well. Love the haunting horn-like synth at the 2:26 mark. The vocal is particularly strong when it returns at the 2:45 mark. This is my favorite song from you, so far. Everything gels together.
@mjcouche
Excellent epic song that evolves along a cinematic path. Nice change-up with the string-like section and solo piano near the mid-point. Didn't expect the chorus to show up, which works well to answer the question of what we're building up to.
@qryss
Love the duduk-based opening. The voice interweaves really well with the duduk. I like that the instrumentation gets out of the way to allow the voice and duduk to shine through. Overall, a most excellent experience.
@Kitusai
Superb combination of music and graphics. The open and sparse instrumentation blends particularly well with the elemental animated graphics. Very contemplative. Bravo!
@DukeWonder
Nice moody opening. I like the shimmery tones with echo response in the middle of the song. Good title, too, because it seems to be setting the stage for something to follow.
@qryss @Kitusai @DavidEnglish Thank you! I’m excited that the album is coming together and that the feedback is getting better every month.
@DavidEnglish Thanks for the compliments!
@richardyot
"All dreamed we could be" - I really like the little melodies with the bell-like tone. It is very pleasing and forms a good introduction to the verse and some of the middle sections. I enjoyed the synth solo; this was the real highlight for me. The vocals was alright but I wished it would sit just a little better when it is on. The music seemed too distant during vocals for me. But otherwise; i really like it - and as always it is catchy too.
@mjcouche
"The long journey home" - The first 50 seconds was amazing for me. Conjured Vangelis for me. And I wished it continued a little bit long in that form. And the part from 1:41 to 2:14! Oh more of that please! I think the vocal bit was unnecessary but since this is a rough mix it was alright. I really enjoyed listening to this.
@DavidEnglish
"Closing time" - Ok so get this; it is closing time and Joe, Mac and Ishaq are on their last drink at the bar. The house band is packing up and Joe gets this idea; let's do a jam! He gets on the sax (he played it a little as a teen) and Ishaq takes the mic but is too inebriated to form coherent words. But Mac, well he's too out of it so he just kind of contorts this way and that way on the dance floor to impress the ladies. The band thinks this is fun so the drummer, guitarist and bassist join in. And what we have, ladies and gentleman, is just what it is; a fun closing time jam. I so enjoyed this one!
@qryss
"Waters Retreat" - The vocal effects are just amazing. It is all that more fascinating that it is an instrument but it is easy to forget that it is. I like the organ parts very much. The bass was really lovely too but I missed it towards the end when you were tapering to an end there. The only thing I'd change is that drums being so busy especially around the vocals parts. Really, lovely piece. Top notch!
@Kitusai
"Suggeste (Lentement)" - This (and some of your previous pieces) have a generative quality to it. Is this so? I really like the other-worldliness of it. I like those sounds you have captured and incorporated: like the sound of my upstairs neighbour dragging his dresser around his room but not at all that annoying.
@seonnthaproducer
"Conflic" - I like this one a lot. I can't quite place it but it has a familiar feel to it. I like the vocals very much but since I don't know much about it I cannot comment on how it could be improved. But there is something really missing for me in this one: a nice muted deep bass - even a little busy one. That and a little bit shorter track. Otherwise; great track!
@DukeWonder
"Pending" - Nice feel to this piece. I have one little complaint; ok maybe a big one: the bass sounds so nice and I wished that it played more than just the root notes just to shine a little bit more. Like at 1:12 mark right after the break, the bass could do some naughty things and that would be amazing because it seems to be the highlight of this track after all.
Thank you everyone for sharing your awesome work. I really enjoyed every piece!
This is my contribution to the SOTM Aug 2020. It was the first full track I made on Gadget (which was in Feb 2020). I have made some changes so that it is more presentable here (such as shortening it). There is no mixing or mastering. I wanted to capture something mysterious, exotic and a new experience; that is of course, my journey into learning about and making music. Hope you like it.
Thanks for listening and for your kind words. I really enjoyed this. The first minute or so reminded me of the Tron Legacy soundtrack. Very cool.
This is great, @spyrogaia. From its evocative, brooding start it becomes a dark carnivalesque piece with a hint of Klezmer to the melody. It reminded me of Mahler (perhaps the first symphony) where the bitterness shines through the apparent jollity of the tune.
I loved it. One of my favorites now.
And thanks for the comments on my track! Having the drums really prominent was deliberate - I was going for the kind of sound that Poliça get (they even have two drummers). Interesting that you can hear organ in there - there wasn’t any actual organ but there was some Novachord - Hammond’s ‘synth’ from the late 1930s.
@DavidEnglish thanks for the nice feedback. It’s hard to beat the duduk for sheer emotional power, hey? But you can only use it once.
