I never used my PC for making music.
I went from analog hardware and tape to iOS with no stops along the way.
I'm still on tape, so to say... using SAW-Studio for cuts and arrangement + dynamics and reverb
it's hard to do work as precisely and effortlessly on a tablet ... any tablet
cheers, Tom
I use the ipad for sketching musical ideas. I export MIDI and audio from ipad into Ableton Live on a PC. Using the ipad exports as a starting point I build out the song in Ableton Live. After finalizing the song I mix and master it in Ableton Live. In sketching out a song arrangement I do a lot of detailed editing of audio, moving stuff around, resampling, etc. I use this workflow because I can do this kind of work much more efficiently on a computer DAW.
Exactly like @Ecamburn!
For the first time in over 10 years I don't even own a Mac or any other non-iOS device. I'm finding it surprisingly easy to adjust. The iPad Pro is great, especially with the keyboard, sometimes I almost forget it's not a MacBook.
Steve jobs would love this.
I was a desktop user for many years and then fell in love with the iPad. Now I use the two connected together to Ableton Live. Best of both worlds.
In my case, I have used some harware groovboxes, then start using ableton, now i use only my ipad ! Flexibility and possibility of software and interface and direct acces/fun of hardware !
In fact i use my ipad for making video too !
Now, i use my computer only for backup, and some very special trick like "rotobrush" in after effect, that's pretty much all...
I do stuff like that at the moment![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
@deltAdata Great song and video. I'm not that familiar with Samplr. It looks like it has a built in multitrack looper or are you using something else for that?
Thanks !
Yep, samplr is a gesture recorder and audio sampler/playback with 6 tracks, so yes it can be used as sort of a looper !
But samplr is not "live looping" ready, for that, loopy hd is way better !
YES man, great video and impressive music
like you used the nanokontrol2 upside/down
thx
nice track - the gesture recorder is a great feature and SamplR's reverb control is my #1 'dial' of all times
super-convenient and an amazingly clear reverb
but just that single one, in different amounts or off...
that's why I prefer to export slot content (or selected parts) for post processing, see below...
up to 1.40 is an intro (you may skip) of pad sounds played on TC11, right as they came out of the device
after that point the pads are arranged on 2 tracks to a jazzy drum record and a bass was added
(out of curiosity if that would work at all...)
never mind the content, but sound/ambience...
I see it less as an extra step just to polish things, but it usually reveals new aspects in tracks - remix before mix
cheers, Tom
The iOS workflow has always put me in a perfect balance of "golden era"(re. 70's) mentality & modern convenience. The biggest issue with my finished work is that I do everything on location thru headphones and my mixes/masters suffer. I will likely remain iOS based and focus on re-developing my music room with acoustic treatments and proper nearfield monitoring for mixing & mastering.
That said- my ultimate goal is go eventually go all hardware with my synths/drum machines and just use iOS for mixing & mastering.
Thanks again obiwahn !![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Yeah, i see your point !
Awsome drum&synth track !! Well done !
Back in time, i used Ableton with some VSTs on PC. Later, when i switched to iOS music apps, i usually used pc just to line in audio output from iPad for record. Now i don't as i currently dont have audiocard anymore; though i'm willing to try myself at trackers like Renoise somewhere in the future (sorry, SunVox).
Well I still use a desktop. I mostly sketch on iPad and then move the stuff to my mac mini with 16gb ram to make it sound better.
I am also a guitarist and heavy NI user. I use guitar rig a lot and IMO nothing on the iPad compares to it. My old Boss GT5 thru an analog inputs into ab audio interface also blows away anything on iOS.
Nope. Not with a Roland XP-50 around... back then...
I tire of seeing this same subject header, that is until I actually start reading the entries..It always interesting... Becaise iOS is at a different place every six months to a year. I had to choose between an iPad Pro 12.9 and a laptop and I went iOS because of Auria Pro. Now with BM3 coming out and Beathawk .... Throw in some Sampletank and some of the Pro packs and Gadget... Collosus piano...Modstep.... That's a LOTTA stuff to work with! All valid points on this forum but 5 yrs from now iOS will be a different Ballgame.. Who knows.. Reason for iOS could happen.. I'll stick with iOS.. You guys who talk about iOS connectivity impeding your workflow.. Have fun loading up and auditioning your 8,000 KOMPLETE sounds. I'll stick with my Sampletank Billy Cobham loops, thanks...
Definitely into the Jakob Haq mindset of doing stuff while waiting for the bus.
Yes. At least for putting the loops i made on ipad together and mixing + mastering. Or then i just record ipad straight to computer(and trigger it from computer), or perhaps skip ipad altogether
I still use my mac and Logic, but onlynbecause i keep my laptop around for video editing and downloading other peoples music to put on my mp3 player, and to use GIMP. Once i can do all that on ios ill be jumping the MacBook ship entirely
I have a MBP, Mac Mini, and LPX. Why wouldn't I use them? Sure, I have several iOS devices, and thoroughly enjoy what they offer, but not to the point where I'll abandon other tools in the box.
I have a powerful studio pc with ableton and reason.. never use it these days. iPad is more inspirational to sit down and use. Thats why im pumped about these new MPC's because id rather use a touch based groove box + ipad then sit infront of a big screen with a keyboard and mouse.
I wont be getting rid of ableton or reason though, for the mix down stage I'd much rather use them than an ipad based DAW, and that extra cpu power is great for plugins.
but day to day ipad is king.. honestly i would say time wise i use:
ipad 90%
pc/mac 10%
wait a second.. can you now gesture record the reverb parameters in samplr!!!![:open_mouth: :open_mouth:](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/open_mouth.png)
I'm only an enthusiastic dabbler (try saying that to the judge) but ...
My laptop has FL Studio and Ableton on it (along with a whole host of other audio gear) ... haven't touched them for months.
Every time a (lifetime free) FL Studio update comes out I install it then promptly go back to the iPad.
The thought of sitting in front of the laptop to do something creative with audio, using a mouse?!, seems odd these days.
For video (as the OT asked) a specific PC with Resolume Arena/Touch Designer will be better investment than any Apple device but only just the needs are "truck" specific.
Said that, for some visuals and all the other goodies an iPad pro should be most than cappable and the combo iPad non pro plus mac has also a lot of possibilities in these duties.
My last setup was iPad 3 + macmini based. I sold mini and go for iPad mini 4 64gb which is all I use (even for multiscreen video with Multicam app) or Mastering my own tracks.
I have an old iPhone 4 for Alchemy and loopy and waitting for new 5s to boost my set a bit.
My alternative to expensive standalone hardware is find old iOS devices (4s and above includding iPods touch) as brain with few apps focusing each one in one function: arranger+sf player, looper, synthsampler... and at the same time cameras for multicam.
Winwin solution over expensive crap from usual music brands with no soul.
I only use a PC for vacuum cleaning. Turn it on in the morning and a few hours later all the dust is sucked into the PC and my home is clean again.
Very much so, I recently was thinking about getting the big ipad Pro versus upgrading my music computer. On balance, I thought I would get far more done on a new computer, so that's what I went for.
I don't do these things anymore... left my collection at NAS/dropbox to check time to time but I prefer start from zero from iPad apps and sampling new material. Also when I need to retime something which isn't straight forward (like a drummer) usually make him/her play again. It's like fixing bad musicians in post-production... never more.
In other hand I make amateur content and left these power features to my pro friends with expensive gear since garageband fills my musical needs by far (including redrumming)
Just a matter of needs.
HELL YEA I still use my desktop!
